Only for the weak minded. The origin of all is without ego, as long as the ego exists of course the 5 Evils will exist. Bani clearly talks about killing the Ego, it doesn’t tell you to hold on.

Let's not try to fly before we can even dream of crawling. For 99.9% of people aspiring to follow Sikhi to the letter, killing Ego is an abstract and unfathomable concept. How many people do you know that have destroyed all trace of Ego within themselves? It's not impossible if Gurbani prescribes it's true, but humanity isn't perfect. Control is the first step, and for most people, the last. You may call it weak minded; I call it being realistic and not over-reaching.

It doesn’t matter, killing the ego is still the end goal of a Sikh, and without it, one cannot become one with the One.

Its at least better to accept the endgame of a Sikh (to kill the ego) rather than to create excuses to justify it. It’s ok if a person isn’t a saint as they start off, but that’s still something they work towards.

I agree, it's something to work towards.

Killing them would render any human unable to function. You rein them in, as you would a wild horse, so that YOU control them not the other way round.

What will we use to control the five vices?  There is nothing that we have to control them.  If you think we have Gurbani.  That is a wrong thought because Gurbani does kirpa on those who let go of "we can control" and "you can control them" or "I can control them".  Satguru controls them and kills them.  The heat of these cool down when we realization there is no we, you, or I and only him through accepting Guru Sahib as our protector and guide only. Gurbani says you can shut off the world but the 5 vices will still control you.  Buddha tried to control them and he failed miserably every time.  Gurbani says, go to the Guru and accept his teachings and the mind will be soothed.

Killing them would render anyone to live as a gurmukh.  The Gurus and bhagats had killed the 5 vices.  Yet they still functioned.

Is it possible to be without ego and not be a doormat?

I sometimes see the relationship between ego and humility almost like a see saw or like dial on a car radio.

There clearly must need to be a balance between the two.

For a normal human being living amongst human nature,  having too much humility and not enough ego can be problematic. The opposite end of that spectrum is also problematic.

The ego is something that needs to be controlled like a dog on a leash.

You sometime see ego and humility displayed in combat sports like MMA and boxing.

There is always a display of ego between the fighters in the build up. After the fight, you see humility and respect between the fighters.

It has it's uses but it is something that needs to be mastered.

Unless you are a brahmgiani that rises above these things most humans are not capable in my view.
