So, I decided to take the time to post on here as I have been living abroad and come back to Canada to see a rather large influx of Sikhs. Being in the states i have to say there are many parellels between the Mexicans of the states and Sikhs of Canada. The only difference being that the Sikhs of Canada tend to have a better education overall. having said that, its very frusturating seeing a culture that is so steeped in agriculture and the past and the notion of over sentimentality when it comes to "FAMILIES" ...as if having kids is the best thing in the world and nothing else really matters...what about overpopulation? what about science? why do Sikhs focus on such tradition instead of focusing on the here and now??

Furthermore what Sikhs are contemporary artists tend to appropriate black culture...Sikhs with turbans rapping and talking all gangsta...well sorry but..thats not our culture at all...that's someone elses culture....I find Sikhs in 2018 to be...well rather embarrassing....

another case in point...gays/homosexuals tend to bring a lot of art and culture to any minority group...but of course, such a notion is nonexistent in sikh culture...so Sikhs don't get that benefit ..and that shows as well..antiqudated and non inspirational...building maternity wards etc..like the world needs more of those....my two cents..

sincerely,

an educated human

That's an inevitability when most of the Sikh influx into Canada are, or were, farmers and/or owners of agricultural land. You can't "educate" agriculture out of a people over the course of a few months or years, especially when it's in the blood, so to speak, for generations.

I'm not sure what case or point you're trying to make here educated human.

You want to protect against over population by enforcing your opinion of proper family size on sikhs and mexicans? You know white people have huge families too right? I'm pretty sure the first nations people feel you overpopulated the americas to say the least.

Having played this "culturally appropriated" music for black people they've all enjoyed it. The difference to them between cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation is if you look down on their version of a thing and praise your own version like it's better and you invented it, that's cultural appropriation. The hip hop movement is a world wide musical movement giving voice to oppressed people everywhere. This black people don't mind at all, that's cultural appreciation/cultural exchange. You know they study sikhism within the black panther community in oakland?

Gay people are in all cultures, you can guarantee they've contributed.

Thank you for your two cent public political message?

Did you come here to learn about sikhism or what exactly?

Agriculture gave birth to and sustains civilization everywhere.  You are educated in what exactly?

(Not english or history apparently)

Oh and by the way mexicans are native americans, so if you don't like seeing them in the americas I'd suggest a change in location.

Canada has extremely tight immigration laws already, those sikhs are rightfully canadian.

You might get more traction on the Canadian Heritage Alliance website.

Just a small, wee difference: The Sikhs in Canada are (overwhelmingly) there legally, as there's no land border between India and Canada. By contrast, there are tens of millions of Mexicans/Latinos who came over illegally in the US.

And that counts for nothing? 25% of the Mexicans brought over as children into the US are functionally illiterate in English, and about half speak only a little.  I doubt you could find a single Sikh who immigrated as a child to Canada and is illiterate in English.

And what is wrong with that? You do know that from agriculture comes the food you eat, right? Or do you just drink a pack of Soylent (packaged meal replacement product)?

As an "educated human", you do know that agriculture is the basis of civilization, don't you?

This is just a wild guess, but I think that if you saw this farmer:

instead of this one:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTFfSvz5_i5HluJ8ZAvcl0

you would think, "Oh, wow, bright young millennials going back to agriculture. How great!" That's because the first farmer has a cool hipster beard, and the latter has an uncut Sikh beard. The first farmer is white, and the second isn't.

See articles by the Washington Post and National Public Radio on millennials going back to agriculture.

This is just a general problem among our people. If a brown man wears a chola, he's an uneducated reactionary. If a white man wears a chola, he's wonderfully in tune with his spirituality. You, despite how educated you think yourself, are merely a bigot. But beyond that, you're bigoted against your own people, making you a self-hating coconut.

Ironically, the "progressive" circles which you inhabit love the idea of "going back to the land". But that doesn't move you to praise our people being in agriculture because the desire to insult your own people is so strong, since as stated above, you're a bigot.

Btw, since you so hate agriculture, let me also ask you where the food is supposed to come from?

I appreciate you spoke to this man as a Sikh.

I found his message so closely resembles that of white supremacists I spoke to him like one.

I will say he only uses the word "our" once in one paragraph. The rest of the time he speaks about Sikhs like they are others.

Guest Singh dislikes I call people trolls or fakes but to be honest I feel this site is targetted by trolls and fakes.

Please do tell us what the original Canadian culture is?

Bro, first of all, he's not an Anglo-Canadian. His name is Sandhu. He's a Sikh.

What he's saying is gansta talk/rap is not our culture (Sikh culture). This is the one thing I agree with him on.

Surely, you don't propose that gangsta talk/rap is our culture, do you?

Anyone could post as guest r sandhu, but like I said before, I appreciate you treated him like a sikh. Maybe he's a coconut like you said.

Rap is now world culture, it's certainly not traditional sikh culture, but to me it doesn't seem to be supplanting sikh culture, there is all sorts of new kirtan etc.

It definitley doesn't fit the definition of cultural appropriation in any way.

I'm not an expert on Sikh culture, but the use of hip hop beats to appeal to the youth and teach them about shaheed etc is smart if you ask me, which you didn't heh.

What is or isn't in the interest of Sikh culture is not my home turf though.

My hat goes off to you all. Thank you all.

Edit: Now that I think of it though isn't kirtan a sanskrit word?

Seems like there is room for cultural exchange, but yeah you wouldn't want Sikhs to forget Sikhi in favor of compton crip culture.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
