Why do a good majority of Punjabi movies promote caste when we as Sikhs ideologically are not supposed to be following the caste system? If the word "Jatt" isn't mentioned in a typical movie (which most likely it will) then at least the last names of all major characters are mentioned to indirectly denote their caste.  I don't get why this agenda is pushed out by Punjabi Cinema and no one really speaks against it? Because it appeases the majority population and thus usage of this single word can make the film a cash cow? I don't mean to take jabs at anyone, as the only example I can use in context of Punjabi Cinema is Jatt promotion. But I guess the point of my question is; why is any type of caste promotion of any caste not looked down upon by mainstream Sikh Punjabis? Is there a solution to it?

The solution is for the film makers and directors not to entertain that type of storyline. They’re the ones that can put a stop to it if they want to. But it’s all about money I guess. The actors won’t say no to the offers as they will be doing it for the money also, otherwise they may not get other offers. It takes a wise actor to reject the offers for these type of movies. I hope one does so others can learn from it and make more meaningful movies.

The interesting point to note is that for decades, Sikhs complained that Bollywood mocks Sikhs as dumb, stupid, etc. Now that Panjabi films have taken off somewhat, many scripts show jatts mocking khatris using derogatory remarks.

No one complains, of course.

ALOT of those films show them as drunks and general prats, falling over and lusting after woman. You'd think that as an image isn't any more of an improvement to the one they fought against.

OP, I don't watch many Punjabi movies, care to provide examples?

Jatt and Juliet1, Jatt and Juliet2, and the likes of them. Jatt James Bond, Carry on Jatta, A Flying Jatt, Jatt Airways. They’ve got Jatt in the titles for starters. I don’t watch them either, so I don’t know the ones that are Jatt based storylines without it in the title, but they’re probably is quite a few.

I forgot Kharku, I don’t know the storyline, but the song lyrics I remembered.

Acha and do these based on the titles portray Jatts as superior to other castes as mentioned by our resident DailyMail reader?

As you can see from the titles, they  are portraying them as comedians.  I’ve not seen any of them but one, Jatt and Juliet, can’t remember if it was 1 or 2. Carry on Jatta is always on Sky like every month, but never seen it fully to know what it’s about. I got bored after 5mins if it. I think Kharku movie portrays the guy as a hero, but still didn’t watch all of it, and I won’t go into a cinema to watch any of them, unless it’s got anything meaningful in it.
