A GROUP of Indian men caught brandishing guns at a Sikh temple in northwest Melbourne have been investigated by police.

At least two long-arm rifles were unloaded from a car at a religious gathering at Khalsa Shaouni, a large Sikh temple in Plumpton last week.

The firearms had been taken to the temple to be blessed by a high-profile religious leader on tour from India.

Members of Melbourne’s Indian community have slammed the group, claiming their actions threaten to create serious racial divisions.

“We don’t need idiots like that coming from India promoting gun culture,” one said.

“It shows a complete lack of respect for the law.

“It’s not a good image for people to brandish guns at a temple, especially in recent times.

“There are nomads who live by the gun in India. It’s wrong. We don’t want that culture here.”

Police attended the Melton Highway temple after receiving reports of weapons on the premises.

A 28-year-old Taylors Hill man will receive a formal warning for allowing an unlicensed individual to hold his registered firearms.

Solicitor Baldwin Lam told the Herald Sun the guns were produced only for ceremonial purposes.

“They were not there for shooting. It was not related to violence, only a cultural thing,” he said.

Not wise to carry unlicensed fire arms in western non-sikh modern societies even if they are unloaded and just used for ceremonial purposes. Allowing it would mean there would be a free for all by every community wanting to do the same. Have to draw the line somewhere

Firearms were not unlicensed.  An unlicensed man held the rifle and therefore the cops issued a warning to the man who owns the rifle.  If a person has a unlicensed firearm there would have been a much harsher punishment and there would have been an arrest most likely. Firearms were registered.
