Questions from an ignorant manmukh, vol.1

Brother SeekingSikhi,

do not know much, but certainly can tell you, being away from Wahiguru is a hell by itself.

Secondly, there is no permanent hell nor heaven as per the thought of eternity in some religions, simply because our souls     are of the same nature of Wahiguru, they can not remain permanently away from Him, whether in the hells or heavens.

The day, the moment He decides to clear up this His huge play, where shall the souls go? Naturally back and merge in Him.

But as we do not know, when will that be, not tomorrow nor 100 years later, so it is better that we by ourselves, we workout the bhakti as per Gurbani and seek His kirpa, in order to merge back in Him, as soon as possible in this very life.

No one becomes a doctor after dying, in a similar way we have to start our journey of returning back right now, for after death  we are bound by our karmas, thus caught up strongly in the endless wheel of births and deaths.

God bless you.

I totally managed to overlook question number 4.  Apologies.  You can find the pdf version here: http://www.vidhia.com/Max Arthur Macualiffe/Sikh_Religion_Vol_1.pdf

The quote in question occurs on pg 145.

The passage reads:

Quote

... The Guru replied, 'Ye have forgotten God. Without love and devotion your minds have gone astray. My field, which you say this water cannot reach, is near, but your ancestors are very far away, so how can the water ye offer them ever reach them or profit them? Ye call me a fool, but ye are greater fools yourselves.'

The Guru after a little time again broke silence and said 'The Hindus are going to hell. Death will seize and mercilessly punish them.' A Brahman replied, 'How can they who repeat God's name go to hell? Thou hast in the first place acted contrary to our custom, and now thou hast the audacity to tell us that we are going to hell.' The Guru replied 'It is true that, if ye repeat the Name with love, ye shall not be damned. But when ye take rosaries in your hands, and sit down counting your beads, ye never think of God, but allow your minds to wander thinking of worldly objects. Your rosaries are therefore only for show, and your counting your beads is only hypocrisy. One of you is thinking of his trade with Multan, another of his trade with Kabul, another of his trade with Delhi, and the gain that shall in each case accrue.' The people, on hearing the Guru thus accurately divine their thoughts began to think him a god, and prayed him to pardon them and grant them salvation by making them his disciples.

The best place to get answers to spiritual questions is to read the SGGS. Shabads explain in more exact detail what Guru Ji always had to say about the Brahmins.

Guru Ji has great powers and whatever he says comes to pass. He has never condemned anyone to hell. However we have to understand that there is a way of getting across to people like the Brahmins. This lot had practically ruined any traces of true religion. They fooled the masses with false stories and ceremonies and looted their wealth. They believed they were the only one who were supposed to pray to God or perform any form of meditation. This was the stigma that Guru Ji had to break and dissolve in order to bring equality of mankind and true worship of God.

Maybe it's my being raised in the christian church, but that seems like quite a statement.

Jesus said the same things to the Pharisees as Guru Nanak did to the Brahmins.

Read this and you will find similarities in him telling the pharisees that they will suffer too, though he did not specify hell. e does talk about punishment, which we will assume in offered only in hell or on earth. It cannot be in heaven as he talks about them blocking the gates of heaven for others too.

Yes, but there's being stuck in the cycle of death and rebirth, stuck with a heart and mind that only knows and craves Maya; and then there's a life of eternal torment for not being a Sant.  It's possible my christian upbringing has me fixated on the idea of a different geographic location that only exists for the sole purpose of torturing sinners.

Brother SeekingSikhi,

following are 4 verses of Fifth Patshahee full of grace and hope for all beings, no matter how fallen or dumb they maybe.

In them, we can see Wahiguru Akal Purukh´s infinite merciful nature, for in all without exception, His light permeates.

ਊਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ

Ooch Apaar Baeanth Suaamee Koun Jaanai Gun Thaerae ||

O my lofty, highest, incomparable and infinite Lord and Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?

ਗਾਵਤੇ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਸੁਣਤੇ ਉਧਰਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਘਨੇਰੇ

Gaavathae Oudhharehi Sunathae Oudhharehi Binasehi Paap Ghanaerae ||

Those who sing them are saved, and those who listen to them are saved; all their sins are erased.

ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਮੁਗਧ ਕਉ ਤਾਰੇ ਪਾਹਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੈ

Pasoo Paraeth Mugadhh Ko Thaarae Paahan Paar Outhaarai ||

You save the beasts, demons and fools, and even stones are carried across.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥

Naanak Dhaas Thaeree Saranaaee Sadhaa Sadhaa Balihaarai ||4||1||4||

Slave Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary; he is forever and ever a sacrifice to You

You can clearly see, that nobody is condemened forever, it is a matter of being conscious oneself, that He is so merciful, that we just need to break our ego, our "durmat", and turn our faces towards Him, seeking His Lotus feet, then no matter, as Guru Jee says above, that even if we are wild as beasts, evil as demons, fools, or heartless stones, even then, out of His unlimited kirpa, He will forgive us, and make us merge in Him.

Just think a little bit about it, is there any such merciful being like Him? The answer is, no. For all are revengeful, except Him.

We ask eye for an eye, and tooth for a tooth, but He, is softer than the softest, He is "bakshanhaar"

That is mahantaa.

As beautifully Guru Jee describes Him in His first verse:

Ooch Apaar Baeanth Suaamee Koun Jaanai Gun Thaerae.

Highest, Incomparable, and infinite Lord and Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?

Sat Sree Akal.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
