Akhand Kirtani Jatha (AKJ)

https://akj.org/

AKJ differs from mainstream Sikhism in their interpretation of one of The Five Ks of Sikhism: instead of accepting the kes or "uncut hair", they interpret the command as referring to keski, a small turban, which they maintain must be worn by Sikhs of either sex. Kes is given a higher requirement.

They are against any forms of meat, including Jhatka.

This is a topic on gurmatbibek.com which is very much an AKJ forum. http://gurmatbibek.com/forum/read.php?3,1963

As mentioned in the name of the Jatha, they elaborate more on their Kirtan. Here are a few examples of their kirtan:

(I am going to keep AKJ short because their maryada and facts are really not hard to find)

Please use these links they tell you a lot of what Bhai Randhir Singh said.

Nanaksar Kaleran

"Nanaksar, near jagraon in Punjab is center founded by Sant Baba Nand Singh Jee, followed by Sant Baba Ishar Singh. Thereafter, they split into many branches each headed by some one claiming to be spiritual descendent of Sant Ishar Singh.
Their Gurudwaras are spread all over Punjab and are found in Delhi and overeseas as well. They are distinguished by a large potrait of Guru Nanak Dev jee, which they claim is rendered by an artist on the basis of 'darshan'(vision) Sant Ishar Singh Jee had of the Guru Saheb. They wear white and all the drapings in their Gurudwaras are white. They do not accept money as an offering. However, Kadah Prasad, fabric for clothes/ dresses and other groceeries/ fruits are accepted as offering. They encourage people to bring cooked langar from their homes.

Their mool mantar goes on till 'jap' following 'guruprasad'. They are normally very strong in keertan and sing very passionately and have a large number of young men who have dedicated their lives to the movement and take vow of celebacy and do not have families."

From my personal experience of Nanaksar, the langar is bought from home, they believe the nanaksar gurdwara is the garden of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Maryada (Gurmukhi): http://nanaksarkaleran.net/maryada.html

Maryada English:

The frequent visits of Sant Mihan Singh and Sant Amar Singh of Nanaksar (-"the Sacred Pool of Nanak") tradition resulted in the establishment of their centers, particularly in Richmond B.C. and Toronto.28 They were also responsible for conducting amrit-ceremonies in the early seventies according to their own Nanaksar Maryada, which significantly differs from the standard manual. For instance, the Panj Piare prepare amrit separately in a different room in an esoteric manner and do not allow the novices to watch the ceremony as participants. When amrit is ready, however, they invite them for initiation. They recite the complete Anand Sahib (forty stanzas), a longer version of the Benati Chaupai and complete Mulmantar (from ihk oankar to nanah hosi bhi sochu) during the amrit-ceremony.

The Nanaksar tradition originated with Sant Nand Singh Kaleranwale (1871/72-1943), who enjoyed high spiritual reputation for his piety and asceticism.29 He was succeeded by Sant Ishar Singh (1916?-63)30, who built an imposing gurdwara called Nanaksar at Kaleran village, near a small town of Jagraon in Ludhiana district. He is credited with having initiated about 750,000 Sikhs with the baptism of the double-edged-sword (khande da amrii) during a brief period of his ministry between 1950 and 1963.3' When he died in 1963, he was succeeded by three contenders who set up separate seats in Nanaksar. Each of them has built up a considerable following and influence among the rural people from the neighbouring districts of Ludhiana, Ferozepur and Faridkot. Several of their followers have settled in North America and Britain during die last two decades. They follow their own Nanaksar Maryada, which includes the celebration of puranamashi (the night of full moon), the recitation of arti ("adoration") at each concluding ceremony and the devotional singing of hymns (keirtan) while Akhand Path ("unbroken reading" of the Sikh scriptures) is going on. They do not mount the Nishan Sahib (or "Sikh Flag") at their gurdwaras.32

All other Jathabandi's

Other jathabandi's are basically just a group of sikhs. For example, dhadi jatha. They don't have a whole new jatha with a maryada do they? Jatha simply means a group/parade.

And a jatha inside a jatha, for example a kirtani group that are akhand kirtani's, they are a smaller jatha that don't believe in anything different, just a little group.

Joining a Puratan Samprada / Jatha

I am no expert on these type of stuff but here are my 20 cents:

To join a Samprada of any sort, you need to follow their rehit top to bottom. You are still a Sikh just different beliefs.

Now to actually be in the Jatha fully, you need to take amrit from that specified Jatha.

Let's say you wanted to become a Nihang, you will need to ask the current Jathedar (they have lots of headquarters) and ask him questions.

Same with taksali most likely. Otherwise you can just take amrit from that Jatha and follow what they say. Remember one thing though, you are to be following your Guru, don't be a sheep and follow the Jatha just for the sake of it.

Now AKJ is fairly easy too, just follow the maryada and the amrit from them.

This was made because when I first wanted to know more about Sikhi and these sort of stuff, it was quite hard and I had to ask some people on the forum which might be inactive next time.

If you want to add anything, post it or PM me it so I can add it to the thread.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
