What sets Sikhs apart from India?

Sangat, I have a request for your help.

 

For school I do an assignment on Sikhism and its influence on modern India. 

There us obviously a difference between Sikhs and other indians; the religion, customs and culture. But India is a very diverse country so I wonder what do Sikhs themselves think sets them apart and what is it that establish Sikhism as unique among a country filled with unique cultures, religions and customs?

The difference between Sikhs and Hindus is clear, the difference between punjab and gujarati, maharashtra, Tamil etc. is clear. But what makes Sikhs truly unique among them?

Since this is your assignment, how about you research yourself ? or are you expecting us to do your homework ?

Anyways, since you put effort in framing this question, I will attempt to give you a headstart.

 

1) What sets sikhs apart from other indians is our religion and our identity . Our turbans and our uncut hair distinguish us from others .

2) We're less than 2% of population, but have held and are still holding influential and respectable posts in india. Sikhs have been on almost every top post of indian service, be it PM, president, chief justice of supreme court, Indian army chief, Indian airforce chief (who's still a sikh) . In this way, most sikhs are respectable and law abiding citizens who have given much to india despite their numbers being less than 2% and having suffered trauma of 1947 and 1984.

3) Sikhism is youngest religion of indian subcontinent, and is the last of the dharmic religions.

4) Sikhs have suffered multiple genocides in just their short history of 500 period. The entire 18th century was hostile to sikhs. 

5) Sikhs believe in the concept of saint-soldier , which is unlike other religious traditions of india .

I have done research already and found the differences as people see them from the outside, I should have clarified I wanted to ask how Sikhs THEMSELVES see the difference, from inside the community.   So I apologise for my miscommunication.
