Ultimately every name is name of god, Dharmic names are ok, but what about abrahamic names of god in SGGS ?

like raheem, kareem , rehman, khuda, parvardigaar ? why can't we have names like 'raheem singh', 'kareem singh' , 'rehman singh' and so on ?

We had names like ram singh, gopal singh, manmohan singh, all names from hindu background.

I always feel we're ok with accpting hindus but not muslims ..

what about Iqbal Singh? There are people with the Abrahamic names too ...mostly the ones from pak punjab or older generation my Great Great Grand Nana was Wazir Singh

funny how hindus use ganga as name for females, while historically sikhs used it for males.

What is a 'Sikh' name anyway? Most of the Guru Sahibaan and other Sikhs throughout history had Hindu/pre-Sikhism Punjabi names.

A Sikh name has meaning.  It holds cultural ties to punjabi/gurmukhi which are the mother languages of Sikh culture and Sikhi.  A child can be cut off from his roots and adopted by white parents and raised as an atheist.  If he has a Sikh name, there will be a point in his life where he will want to know where his name came from.  This can light a spark into his past and open the door to Sikhi. Say if the adopted child was named Kevin, he will have less likely chance of knowing about his past.  Punjabi parents naming their child Kevin are stepping away from their religion.  They might as well change their last name to Smith or Williams.

The Gurus names are not based on Hinduism or pre sikhi.  As Gurbani uses names as Har, Ram, Gobind, Krishna, etc to define an attribute of God, so are the Gurus names holding meaning into Sikhi.

because of bollywood interpretation of Ganga Mai coming down to earth.... sheep will follow the crowd

Kuchh bhi ! Ganga coming down to earth is found in ancient hindu texts. Its not a modern story. The sage Bhagirath brought it down, though today its a cesspool , though GoI pumping thousands of crores to clean it up, but its still dirty with dead bodies , but thats another topic.

Also "river" is a feminine noun in hindi / sanskrit. River is also known as "sarita" , another hindu female name . So ganga is aptly feminine , although don't know why sikhs appropriated it for men.

Same goes for sobha/shobha , which is again a feminine hindu name but sikhs are using it for men

but in Punjabi names ending in aa tend to be masculine/large like Artha and ee feminine/small arthi , different grammar rules . SInce Punjabi is based in Prakrit the parent of Sanskrit maybe we should ignore the backwards trends in Hindi which is a slave language

I believe a Sikh should try to live up to their name. Whether they are blessed from birth or upon Amrit, they should research the meaning of it and try to be that person.

The forename has a strong psychological impact on the mental mindset and it can determine the nature of that person in life through their thoughts, speech and actions.

I have noticed many Panjabi's, even outsiders to the faith, choose a name that sounds cool to them  Is this not ego and idiocy?

Sache patshah Guru Gobind Singh ji lived up to his name because he was all-knowing and prophetic of earth.

The chaar sahibjaade showed invincibility and fearlessness by embracing war and death in battle then strength and victory in choosing Sikhi and death over Islam and its lies of paradise.

Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa Bhindranwale ji was a 'general' as he lead and united the men and women of Panjab.

Sikhs are blessed to have such shining lights as heroes and although rare to find in life, that does not mean we cannot try to be like them.

Ive seen plenty of Sikh coconut males.

Large beer belly

Can of beer in one hand

wolverhampton scarfe around their neck

strong brummie accent

have had about 3 failed marriages

Kids are married to goreh Kaleh and just about any race.

No nothing about Sikhism but know everything about beer, football and barbecues and they go by the name of Jimmy.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
