Why on earth would they make India proud?

Because Indians believe they are Indians.

But well done to them. That Dhesi guy is from Gravesend isn't he?

They are only Indians if they don't believe in Sikh rights.

He is from Gravesend. He was mayor.

Is he a conviction politician, and what will he do for the Sikh community?

Will he stand up for what he believes in? Is he a politician to help people or for himself (name/fame/money etc)?

Yeh, that's a bit of bummer if he is? What did he do for the community as a mayor?

I don't understand the first part of your post. The answer to the second question, is 'I don't know'.

Maybe someone from Gravesend or who knows this guy well can answer

What I meant was it's a shame if he is.

Wikipedia entries:

He is the son of Jaspal Singh Dhesi, who runs a construction company in the UK, and who is the former president of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, in Gravesend, the largest Gurdwara in the UK.

Dhesi has a bachelor's degree in mathematics with management studies from University College London, studied applied statistics at Keble College, Oxford, and has a Master of Philosophy in the history and politics of South Asia from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.[1]

This seems really good, especially the MPhil he has South east Asia history.

But then the next paragraph is so dodgy.

In 2012, his mother, Dalwinder Kaur Dhesi, was jailed in India, for kidnap and forcing an abortion on a teenage mother, who later died.[4][5]

I did some research regarding this, and this is regarding the girl involved with the ex SGPC president Jagir Kaur (was it her daughter or daughter in law).

So with the Dad being involved in Gurdwara committee, the Mum being involved in nefarious activity with an SGPC President - and the son is active in politics. As sikhs, I am sure we have learnt to be careful of all politicians including SGPC, Gurdwara committees and government.

I thought everyone knew this about Dhesi? It's common knowledge.

Jagir's Kaur's daughter was involved with another guy who came from a "different caste".

How he will navigate through the forthcoming caste discrimination bill and associated debate, any debates about so called "honour" violence and/or killings remains to be seen.

Jagir Kaur's daughter was a married  woman By Anand Karaj , and was expecting her husband's child, on the pretext of recounciliation the girl let down her guard and this is when she was drugged  and kidnapped . The abortion was done on her in that state because of her unconscious state they didn't know things were going wrong until it was too late. So his Mum was an accompolice to kidnapping and manslaughter

anyways, still this is the Son and he could be different. He is also part of Labour which I guess means they follow more liberal views as opposed to the Conservative party?

The press love putting Labour politicians down so it's better if this thing isn't too over-exposed as we need a Singh MP!

He has publicly stated that he supports his mother. Given that he is now a public servant, it is vital that the public are aware of his background in order to view his forthcoming stance on key issues through the prism of his mother's history.

It's not "putting labour politicians down", it's informing the public - that's the purpose of the press. Unless of course, you live in North Korea.

You're expecting this? Surely he is in politics to help others (including our community) and not for personal gain?

Unnecessary sarcasm don't you think? Of course I know a lot of politicians are there for their own gain

    • Woah this reads like a post from 90s.  It brought back memories. When there would be poems or posts or chain email messages "FW: Very Important!! Current  State of the Panth. Forward  to all singhs singhnian." Those were the good ol days.ppl were always telling sikhs to fix themselves and get beyond judging ppl on their looks, jathebandis. It was so simple. Now theres so.many issues that sikhs differ on and have diff organizatiins for. Theres ppl wantin khalistaan, some ppl wanting more parchaar, others wantin 1 rehit, others trying to find oldest raag, or purattan shastar vidhiya, some wanting no inter faith, others wanting to stop muslims...it was so much simpler back then..   PS  Surely nobody argues about the meat flavored chips. I thought we were all past that. And unto more advanced issues
    • I believe many Jewish people did see it as a shameful public display.. Have you been through a range of Jewish forums to qualify your assertion that there was no individuals who saw it as a act that demeaned the Jewish community..  Moreover being a Sikh and being part of the Sikh panth requires us to behave in a way becoming of the Sikh way. Not relative to the behaviour of others... On the battle field bhai khaniya demonstrated this.. If we truly believe in Sikhi then we can't compromise our principles... I applaud the Sikh panth to be self critical it should be welcomed.. We should measure  ourselves against the highest standards. We should be prepared to say when our actions have come up short..  I do however agree that we shouldn't do this because we are worried about how we will be perceived by other communities. We should do it because it's right
    • Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh if this was really accidental and you had no intention to do so, just do 5 japji Sahib and ardas.
    • Gurbani mentions Sikhs should never ever in their life should ever lay their eyes on married woman (pirai estri).
    • Guest Singh
Vjkkvjkf, What is the procedure to bring a kirtini jatha from India to Canada for kirtan hazri at gurdwara in Ontario? Thanks Simardeep Singh
