Hi,

I just need some advice. When I was a kid I used to swim, and then I stopped . I am 20 and I want to start swimming, but its my body that does not let me swim. You see swimmers all shave, and don't see hair on their body. I know as a  sikh its all wrong, but I don't know if I should start to swim again . You dont see swimmers with hair and beard. It will be so weird.  Swimmer shave their armpit hair and their body, and as a guy as a sikh who trys to follows its priniples, what should I do ?

Brother,

There is nothing to be ashamed of with the natural hair. Are we talking about professional swimming here? I never heard that in order to swim, all swimmers shave.

Bro,

my hubby used to swim for his school swim team and has now started back hair has zero to do with performance he has a full beard and natural body hair , he even goes scuba diving he plaits his kesh of his dhardi or tucks into a buff (tubular scarf) to prevent it moving into his field of view , get into the zip  of his suit

It's true, brother. I don't know about all, but many swimmers do shave. I think it's pure bunkum, they think that they'll get fractions of a second advantage. This is the top hit on Google for why swimmers shave:

http://www.active.com/swimming/articles/why-swimmers-shave-their-bodies

It says that while some people think shaving will make the body more "aerodynamic" (really hydrodynamic), the real reason for shaving is to remove dead skin cells and heighten the feel for the water, thus making you think you're going faster, which sounds totally nutty.

Here's a slideshow of Olympic swimmers both shaved and unshaved:

This should dispel the notion that you absolutely have to shave to swim.

Don't be a metrosexual wuss, brother. If you want to swim, go ahead and do so, but you have absolutely no need to shave to cut mythical fractions of a second off your time, because I'm sure you're not going to be going into the next Olympics, are you?

Even if you were, would you exchange showing your back to Guru Sahib in exchange for a gold medal? As Sikhs we should not be tempted to exchange even all the gold in the world for moving away from Guru ji:

ਜੇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਆਰਜਾ ਹੋਰ ਦਸੂਣੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

Even if you could live throughout the four ages, or even ten times more,

And even if you were known throughout the nine continents and followed by all,

With a good name and reputation, with praise and fame throughout the world-

Still, if the Lord does not bless you with His Glance of Grace, then who cares? What is the use?

Among worms, you would be considered a lowly worm, and even contemptible sinners would hold you in contempt.

Jap Guru Nanak Dev

The only thing you should be worrying about is improving your breaststroke.

Wow! ImpressIve.  Apne have more trouble adapting their own religion than gore.

Best not to be self-hating. There are wonderful Sikhs of every group.:waheguru:O:). The only difference is we ignore the good, and only focus on the bad among us.
