Here is a humble attempt at translating a portion of Prof. Sahib Singh's preface of his Jaap Sahib steek. May Waheguru bless his children with knowledge of the faith and provide grace. I'd like to thank Laal Singh of the forum (SA) for looking over a draft and providing invaluable suggestions for improvements. Any constructive criticism that could help improve the translation is welcome:

Jaap Sahib

Prof. Sahib Singh (D Litt)

The preface to the book ‘Jaap Sahib Steek’ authored by Prof. Sahib Singh (D. Litt.)

‘Jaap’ Sahib is the ‘bani’ of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. From the rehatnamas [we find] Satguru Ji insisting that every Sikh should, at the very least, recite Japji and Jaap every morning. This bani is also read during the preparation of ‘Amrit’.

However, on general observation it appears as if the attention given to this bani does not reflect what is said in regard to its necessity for Sikh spiritual life The apparent reason for this is that [the bani] contains a significant amount of words from the Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian lexicon and because of this, it appears to be very difficult. To overcome this difficulty a number of commentaries have been produced but from the perspective of those students who read them analytically, these are not fully satisfactory

Although this is the first commentary I have presented covering the bani of Guru Gobind Singh, I have created it using the same methods [previously] employed in the Jap Ji, Bhatta Dey Swaiyye, Asa Di Vaar, Sukhmani and Ramkali teekas [penned by the author]. From a ‘linguistics‘ perspective, great attention has been paid to ensuring that a student should be able to correctly comprehend every difficult word and the meanings of their underlying ideas.

Certain words are used in a repeated fashion in ‘Jaap’ Sahib and because of this it becomes quite difficult to memorise. Even when one has memorised it, should one’s attention wonder at the time of recital there is a decreased chance of it being fully completed because the reoccurrence of particular words means that [one can easily find themselves subsequently proceeding] from an earlier or later point of the prayer. So this ‘bani’ is very helpful in [learning] to keep one’s attention singularly fixed.

Reading this ‘bani’ from the perspective of the unfamilar, can lead to the impression that it simply consists of repetitive references to random, individual attributes of the Supreme Soul (ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ) and that the notions contained within this bani do not form any consistent, uniform whole. However, in this commentary I have described how we do indeed receive a uniform and connected thread of meaning throughout the 22 chands of ‘Jaap’.

Hindu folk were calling Sanskrit the ‘language of gods’ (ਦੇਵ-ਬਾਣੀ). For the Muslims, Arabic alone was considered to be legitimate and right according to their creed. The people of each faith were loathed to use the language of the other’s scripture to express their religious emotions (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਤਰੰਗ) . However, by using Sanskrit, Arabic and Farsi words in Jaap, and by ordering Sikhs to recite this prayer on a daily basis, Guru Gobind Singh permanently eradicated the narrow mindedness (ਤੰਗ-ਦਿਲੀ) and partisanship of the Hindu and Muslim eras from the hearts of Sikhs.

Despite the presence of people who called themselves ’ renunciates’ of the conventional way of life, at the time of Guru Nanak Sahib’s arrival in the country, genuine detachment and love for humanity was rarely witnessed. Lives lived with compassion and contentment where scarce and scattered thinly over the land. Now commonly any nation’s ‘folk songs’ would have a deep impact (ਡੂੰਘਾ ਅਸਰ) on the lives of its inhabitants, but due to the spread of ceremonious (or overt) shows of religiosity [as opposed to true faith], even these folk songs were failing to inspire any movement towards higher aspirations such as kindness, contentment, love, sacrifice and so forth. Guru Nanak suffused these musical folk traditions with a new lease of life. Through using ghorian, chand, alaahnyaan, sadu, barahmah, laavaan, vaar and various other [poetic] metres, all of these dying aspects of [people’s] existences were reinvigorated with a fresh breeze of life; [As a consequence] sentiments of truth, restraint, love, compassion and contentment began to bring beauty into the lives of the common man.

The word (of Guru Nanak) consisting of the very essence of peace (ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਰਸ ਬਾਣੀ) halted people’s [tendency towards] corruption. But the heart that doesn’t contain the capacity for spirited movement (ਜੋਸ਼ ਦਾ ਹੁਲਾਰਾ) cannot remain eternally steadfast in purity. This attribute [steadfastness in purity] cannot survive if an enthusiastic zeal is not produced. The beauty of the Almighty has two sides; one is ‘Jamaal’ (delicate beauty) and the other is ‘Jalaal’ (majesty). Restraint, love, compassion, kindness and contentment (ਤਿਆਗ, ਪਿਆਰ, ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ) etc. are soft (ਕੋਮਲ) aspects of the beauty of human existence, which find inspiration in the bani of the Guru Granth Sahib. To keep this ‘jamal’ (delicate beauty) alive necessitated the keeping of ‘jalaal’. There was a need for the very essence of bravery (ਬੀਰ ਰਸ). This duty was the responsibility of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The pleasure (ਲੁਤਫ) of their bani is such that whilst it contains the praises of God (ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ), the words and the poetic metres that have been utilised are such that they cause the oscillation of bir raas (ਬੀਰ ਰਸ) when being listened to or read.

All of the bani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been divided along the line of ‘raags’, but the bani of Guru Gobind Singh Ji has been separated according to individual ‘chands’ which helps produce bir ras (ਬੀਰ-ਰਸ). Note how God is referred to in the form of a sword in Bachitar Natak and how the type of words and metres used in the salutation causes one’s mind to be pervaded with a rising, dancing fervour (ਜੋਸ਼).

The sword chops well, chops the forces of fools and this mighty one bedecks and glorifies the battlefield.

It is the unbreakable staff of the arm, it has the powerful luster and its light even bedims the radiance of the sun.

It brings happiness to the saints, mashing the vicious ones, it is the destroyer of sins and I and under its refuge.

Hail, hail to the cause of the world, saviour of the universe, it is my preserver, I hail its victory. 2.

(Dasam Granth pg 95)

Perhaps it was these two reasons that led Guru Gobind Singh Ji to keep his own bani separate from that of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib?

When and where was Jaap Sahib [first] uttered?

In 1699 AD Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji prepared the Khalsa panth by administering Amrit (literally nectar). Jaap Sahib is amongst the holy utterances (ਬਾਣੀਆਂ) that are read at the time of Amrit preparation. It is essential for the five Singhs who prepare Amrit to be personally conversant with reciting these banis through regular practice (ਨੇਮੀ). So those Singhs that played a part in the preparation of the very first Amrit, on the day the Khalsa was inaugurated, would certainly have been regularly practising the recital of these prayers and would have had ‘Jaap’ Sahib committed to memory.

At the time of selecting the [original] panj piaray (literally five beloved), there was no use of criterion that limited those who could volunteer to people who had committed ‘Jaap’ Sahib to memory (ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਯਾਦ). But the preparation of Amrit by these panj piaray for Guru Gobind Singh ji makes it clear that they too had memorised ‘Jaap’. This proves that at that time, the daily recital (ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪਾਠ ) of ‘Jaap’ Sahib was common practice (ਆਮ ਪ੍ਰਚੱਲਤ) amongst the Sikh people (ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ) . On the first day, twenty-five thousand (ਪੰਝੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ) Sikhs took Amrit, [whilst this was happening] many other groups (ਜਥੇ) were simultaneously prepared for [the purpose of further] administering [Amrit]. All of them would have been routinely performing daily recitals of ‘Jaap’ Sahib, which is why they were able to make Amrit. Placing all of these ideas (ਵਿਚਾਰ) before us (literally before our eyes - ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ) [and evaluating them] leads to the conclusion (ਸਿੱਟਾ) that the daily recitation of ‘Jaap’ Sahib had become a common practice (ਆਮ ਰਿਵਾਜ਼) at that time.

On inspection of this bani’s ‘construction’ (ਬਣਤਰ) we find that it contains many words from Sanskrit and quite difficult ones at that. So [facilitating] the proliferation (ਪ੍ਰਚਲਤ) of this bani [amongst Sikhs] must have taken a significant amount of time: particularly under conditions where common people were kept at a distance from ‘Brahmins’ and with poor folk (ਗਰੀਬ ਲੋਕਾਂ) being especially kept away (ਵਾਂਝਿਆ) from Sanskrit.

Also, the idea that perhaps Satguru ji {Guru Gobind Singh) had those Singhs, who prepared Amrit on the day of the creation of the Khalsa, read [Jaap Sahib] from gutkay, doesn’t seem plausible (ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦਾ) when we apply the touchstone of scrutiny (ਪਰਖ ਦੀ ਕਸਵੱਟੀ) to it. Try and recite ‘Jaap’ Sahib and see [for yourselves]. A new person who is unfamiliar with both Sanskrit and Farsi , is unable to recite it in the correct manner even after making sustained effort (ਮਿਹਨਤ ) over 2, 4 or 10 days (ਦੋ ਚਾਰ ਦਸ ਦਿਨਾਂ). Plus, on the first day of reading the prayer from a gutka, the reader’s internal being cannot experience the vibration (ਹੁਲਾਰਾ) and zeal (ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ) that is produced from this bani. In this way the whole ‘endeavour’ (ਸਾਰਾ ‘ਉਦਮ) would become fruitless (ਨਿਸਫਲ). So from the above deliberation (ਵਿਚਾਰ) the conclusion that the bani of ‘Jaap’ Sahib was [originally] uttered (ਉਚਾਰੀ) some time considerably prior to 1699 AD and that the recital of this prayer was very much customary amongst Sikhs [by that date], emerges.

In the way of history, it is a well known (ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ) fact that 52 scholarly poets resided with Guru Gobind Singh ji, who, under Satguru ji’s personal supervision, composed various types of inspirational verses. On assuming the responsibility of guruship, Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji had seen that a time for the clash of swords (ਖੰਡਾ ਖੜਕਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ) was again drawing near and to fully overcome (ਉਤਰਨ) this [situation], there was the need to fill Sikhs with warrior-essence, in addition to the naam of Guru Nanak Dev. Amongst other initiatives, it was essential that spirit rousing poetry was prepared, and that the listening and reading [of such poetry] was propagated (ਪਰਚਾਰ ) amongst everyday Sikhs. The easiest method for this propagation could only have been through [the use of] a ‘poetic symposium’ (ਕਵੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ). So, under the personal observation of the lord of the aigrette (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਜੀ), a symposium of inspirational poetry used to take place.

[so] when were these poetic symposiums started? Regarding this, history informs us that in the territory of Nahan, where a gurdwara [called] ‘Paunta Sahib’ made through dasam patshah’s own hands exists, such symposiums took place in their very presence. (A wall at this location collapsed in August 1942, during flooding of the Jamuna river). So from this, two facts come be known, firstly that prior to their arrival in the territory of Nahan, some knowledgeable poets were already in the company of Satguru ji, and secondly that motivational verses composed by these poets were read to Sikhs in a ‘poetic symposium’ so that bir-ras grew within them.

But, if Satguru ji placed such a high value on [such] erudite poets, and when we have their very own lofty, personally authored (ਉਚ ਦਰਜ਼ੇ) ‘words’ presently available in our possession, it wouldn’t be a mistake to postulate (ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ) that Hazoor’s [Guru ji’s] own bani too was conveyed (ਸੁਣਾਈ) at the symposiums held at Paunta Sahib and at that time they themselves had become well established (ਮੰਨੇ-ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੇ ) as a ‘poet’.

Guru Gobind Singh arrived in the domain of Nahan in 1684 AD; and stayed there for 3 years. It was during these days (1684-87), in this very area, on the secluded (ਇਕਾਂਤ) banks of the River Jamuna, that (amongst others), the verses of ‘Jaap Sahib’, ‘Swaiyyay’ and ‘Akaal Ustat’ were espoused (ਉਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ). Due to the inclusion (ਸ਼ਾਮਲ) of ‘Jaap Sahib’ and ‘Swaiyyay’ into the [prescribed] daily prayers, a lot of Sikhs had memorised them and by the time of the preparation of [the first] Amrit, [one could] ordinarily (ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਤੌਰ) encounter plenty of Sikhs who knew them by heart (ਜ਼ੁਬਾਨੀ ਯਾਦ).

Arabic and Persian in Jaap Sahib.

Besides Sanskrit, this bani also contains Persian and Arabic words. The complexities (ਗੁੰਝਲ ) that are seen in the Sanskrit words are not apparent with these words; but here too there is one difficulty relating to Arabic grammar, which is essential to properly comprehend.

...............................

Within GGS ji’s bani there are instances of such unique narratives (ਅਨੋਖੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) that they can be misunderstood if external criterion (ਬਾਹਰਲੀ ਕਸਵੱਟੀ) is applied to interpret them. With regards to the use of the word ‘Bhagautee’ in ‘Ardas’, this has led to misapprehensions on the part of many respectable people (ਸੱਜਣ). Some, considering it to signify devi (ਦੇਵੀ-ਵਾਚਕ), commence efforts to remove [the reference] from bani, and some respectable folk, giving the meaning as a ‘sword’, have started to say that Satguru Gobind Singh ji initiated the worship of weaponry (ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ-ਪੂਜਾ). We encounter the use of the word ‘Kalka’ (ਕਾਲਕਾ) in Bachittar Natak; upon the reading of which some respectable people have come to accept that Satguru ji worshipped ‘Durga’. Some are saying that this bani doesn’t belong to Satguru ji.

................................................

The real cause of these misapprehensions is that we have used external conventions to interpret the use of such words in Satguru Gobind Singh’s bani. But in reality the correct method to understand their intended meaning is to read other instances of the use of such words - within their own bani - and then to see the interpretation with which they themselves used the words. High calibre (ਉਚ-ਕੋਟੀ) poets and gifted writers don’t simply use an existing language in a beautiful manner, instead they also fill the language with additional new words and concepts (ਖਿਆਲ), putting new life into dead words [by] presenting them in a new form and using them with fresh meanings.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
