Apps to learn Gurmukhi

Can anyone recommend apps or websites that work to teach Gurmukhi to the older generations.

its best to go to a proper Taksali approved Santhiya teacher, doing it alone is good for practice but learning it is a completely different thing.

 

Whatever you do don't go to any old person teaching Santhiya, especially ones trained by the "SGPC", all their stuff has no lineage to actual santhiya and its sources are murky at best. If you want some good apps to use here's the ones I use. 

 

Damdami Taksal app (just put that into app store lemme know if u have trouble finding it) - this app is great as it colour codes which parts of gurbani has pauses and how long they are meant to be. There's an amazing range of bani and loads of variety there. You can do paaths like Chaupai Sahib and Reharas Sahib from various dals from there too depending on which one you connect with the most. This app is definitely the most reliable.

 

SearchGurbani - this app is also good as it has english written Gurmukhi too, however DO NOT trust the translation on there. The ones of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are ok but the ones of Dasam Granth Ji are just horrific, they're completely misconstrued so for translations I recommend listening to Katha about it. The app also has a habit of adding bindis in random places from what I gather, just remember that pher bindi isn't in Guru Granth Sahib Ji or Dasam Granth, though Dasam Granth has bindis within it iirc. So if you see words like Durg-shah, remember to pronounce it as Durgsah. or Dusut and not Dusht. 

 

But once again. I recommend finding a proper Taksali teacher to teach you.

I bookmarked the youtube videos for my mom on her tablet and she loves it. She's not tech savvy but is still able to use this. She also does sahaj paath (while learning santhya at the same time) from the Gurbani Unlimited app.

thanks ill have to download that one. Might be a great help for me since im doing Sehaj Paath of SSGSJ and DGJ
