This is exactly why Sikhs should not support Indian army or even be happy when Indian cricket team wins. Sikhs in the Indian army are just cannon fodder. Delhi hakoomat is no friend of the Sikhs. Until Sikhs get their own Raj, Punjab will continue to be dried out and killers of Sikhs will be free.

We need more diversity in the economy. It's an excessive reliance on agriculture that is killing us. 

If people haven't figured out that this business is unsustainable and insufficient for many families by now, then natural selection will kick in. This tradition of sending sons into some army to make up for the continual financial shortfall (or unpredictability) of this type of business seems to be a common (and in my opinion shortsighted,) strategy employed by rural society.
