Meat - Ok To Eat Due To Medical Reasons?

Hi,

I have an extensive intolerance to numerous plant foods and as a result of trying to be vegetarian, my health has deteriorated. I've been admitted to hospital numerous times, and I keep being advised my health will continue to decline - unless I start consuming meat again.

I want to ask if according to Sikhi this is ok? I love Sikhi, but if my health continues to do down, I won't be well enough to continue to practice the rest.

Speak to à nutritionist who specialises in vegetarianism.

There are many thing such as dhals and 'beans' etc which may be suitable for you.

a meat diet cant be good or better for you. The western medical thought is still behind so naturally gp's and hospital advice will be to have meat. The karma your taking on is worse.

You may also want to see someone who can investigate what triggers your intolerance and look to identify/ resolve that. Whether through holistic treament or a western route.

Only you can make the decision as its your journey and your karam. Many sikhs would say no to eating meat regardless of your condition. Some would give in and accept you have a condition.

All im saying is western thought of medical professionals is constantly changing as they 'discover' new evidence. Meat is still something they are behind on. There doctors only know what they are taught. Whereas alternative therapy is based on thousands of years of practice all over the world...some will work for you others wont.

Do ardas and recite Gurbani, choose a shabad such as Sarab rog ka aukad naam and mediate on it for a month or 2 and let Guru sahib guide your decision

Guptprincess ji. I'm assuming you are seeing a dietician/nutritionist? They should give you advise of meat alternatives. And also a plan to make sure you are getting all the nutrients. If that hasn't been done, then get your Doctor to refer you to one.

Also with a problem like this you should be under a specialist who will be able to advise and support you with this. Again, if you do not have this network, then ask for it.

I think you should try different veg cuisines like South Indian, Italian, Mexican, Lebanese, Malay, Burmese etc

Eat more fruit, salads & nuts.

Joining a cooking class will be helpful.

Well since your a vegetarian I assume you can ask for alternatives, but again I wouldn't really know since the official Maryada posted by the Akal Takht before it had massands says meat is allowed, (during the last real Jathedar Ranjit Singh it was still allowed).

Don't eat halal or kosher though.

It makes me laugh when people start over-riding medical advice like they have medical degrees.

My brother was in the same boat as you, and he was a vegetarian since he was a kid, then he became increasingly ill and lost so much weight he looked like he had been in a prisoner of war camp.

Doctors advised him like they did you - so he eats meat now (only chicken), but not all the time. He doesn't look like he is at death's door anymore.

I wonder how anyone could ever eat Halal or Kosher, (that stuff has no compassion whatsoever).

Vegetarian here. But this advice is spot on, people need to stop getting involved in things they probably don't grasp well enough. It's a different story if you're an actual medical specialist. Akal gave you intelligence, apply it.

I knew someone in a similar boat as well, It's heartbreaking.

So, the institution of the Akal Takhat is awesome when it passes edicts that chime with your worldview (and tastes), but when it contradicts them, those massands are rotten to the core, lol? ;)

You got in trouble on a similar topic last time, so why not sit this one out? You're hardly impartial on the subject.

I think it is more to do with the prayers done over them myself.

Anyway, let's not go on about it. This forum has a policy on the subject: so I'm going to respect it.

But to iterate - people shouldn't be meddling in medical advice when someone is serious ill like they've been through medical school.

I think the OP has had a range of perspectives on the matter now and should make their personal decision.

Probably better to close the thread now before it denigrates into arguing over meat eating versus vegetarianism?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
