Did The British Control Hazoor Sahib?

I know one of the first things they did after the fall of of Lahore is to chop down all the trees around Hazoor Sahib which used to be a defensive measure.

This is telling because Hazoor Sahib was in British occupied territory for a LONG time before they attacked Panjab, and they daren't do it, presumably in fear of reprisals. But after the fall of the Sikh kingdom they felt emboldened enough to do it.
