Khalsa Ji,

Gyan is very important, but repetition has a place in Gurmat too, i.e Shabad sidhi.

Mukti Nama, 10th Patshahi states that: a Gursikh cannot marry into father's and mother's surname; if we drop our surnames, how can we tell, whether our potential partner, is blood related or not?

Our ancestors fought bravely, to maintain their identity, what right do we have to call them low?

Āpas ka▫o jo bẖalā kahāvai.

One who calls himself good -

Ŧisėh bẖalā▫ī nikat na āvai.

goodness shall not draw near him.

Worldly needs, need to be fulfilled too:

यह माला अपनी लीजै ॥

Yėh mālā apnī lījai.

Here, Lord, take back Your mala.

Even beasts, ghosts and the stone-hearted are saved.

Ka▫ī kot bẖūṯ pareṯ sūkar marigācẖ.

Many millions are the evil nature-spirits, ghosts, pigs and tigers.

9th Patshahi allowed Balaki daas's tasavvar {artist}, to paint a portrait of him. When we see photos of Gurmukhs, photos representing Guru Sahiban, we are immediately reminded of Naam.

Khalsa Ji, my comments are endorsed by Gurbani; hence taken as maryada. Could you please provide a source for your views?

If one group of Sikhs feel that they can dictate Maryada, to others, especially, when it doesn't carry Satguru's endorsement, then what is there to stop others, from making up their own Maryada.

Making Maryada without Satguru's endorsement, will lead to, Panthic Disunity, rather than Panthic unity...

None of the Gurus , starting with Guru Nanak Dev ji used last name - and also none of our shaheeds / great gursikhs - baba budha, bhai satidas , bhai matidas , baba bidhichand etc, and after amrit sanchaar - bohta singh, garja singh, mehtab singh, sukha singh etc - you get my point. Even in recent times people who took up arms against Indian tyranny didnt use castist names ....

So what right do we have to use caste based last names ?

Mehtab singh ji - thanks for the suggestion , added lines pertaining to fidelity

Singhbj singh - corrected - thanks for the suggestion

Can we make this is a sticky and encourage others to post more tuks ?

10th Patshahi uses the word "got" ( surname), in Mukti Nama. When Guru Ji tells us, not to marry into our mothers & fathers surname, then it is clear that Maharaj acknowledges the importance of surname.

Gurbani refers to Guru Sahiban as: Bhalla Amardas, Bedi, and Sodhi; are these not surnames?

"9th Patshahi allowed Balaki daas's tasavvar {artist}, to paint a portrait of him."

Exactly Mokham Singh Ji, Gurmat is marg which is spontenous flow of prem, bairaag, sargun, shabad, gyan aspects blended beautifully in naam - how can we totally shun off sargun aspects in our dharam? We be inadvertently doing khandan of gurbani if we did that.. Sargun too is saroop of maharaj along with shabad and nirgun-gyan. Regardless of whichever aspect one is attached, one thing is common between all is ego has to be surrender to any aspect of maharaj and ego has to die. This is ultimate fact which is common in all.

For eg- once bhagat has surrender his ego too sargun saroop of maharaj- satguru himself in sargun saroop draw bhagat into color of love and give him sargun-nirgun ekta shabad gyan- bhramgyan and mukhti, similarly goes for sikh who is attached to shabad aspect of maharaj once ego or individual surti-individualistic mind dies in shabad, satguru in form of shabad itself dissolve his sikh into shabad and leaving only shabad gyan -bhramgyan and finally similarly goes for upasakh of nirgun advait gyan aspect of maharaj- shabad gyan, once one has to totally disassociated themselves from ego and lost their individualistic mind totally- waken from dream-ego state always aware of supreme awareness bliss (sat chit ananda-gurparsad) within like unbroken current, satguru himself in form of self-atma-paratma draw his sikh towards its ultimate saroop and eventually merges his sikh into all pervading non dual(advait) - universal supreme consciousness bliss saroop of maharaj.

There is a difference between using a family name and discrimination based upon caste. Using Got is not anti-Sikhi, discriminating based on caste/class is. Gurbani uses words such as Chamar, Bhalla frequently. We could use Gots like the western people do, simply for heritage/identification purposes.

Didn't Bhai Gurdas refer to Guru Ji as 'Sodhi Patshah'?

Let me know your thoughts .

A very beautiful veechar panthicunity jee.

In addition to it, I would  humbly like to add a couple of verses of Dhan Dhan Saguru Arjun Dev Maharaj:

ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ

Dhukh Bhanjan Thaeraa Naam Jee Dhukh Bhanjan Thaeraa Naam

Aath Pehar Aaraadhheeai Pooran Sathigur Giaan ||1||

By doing this above, the consequence, or the result is that, He, comes and dwells within us, as seen in the following verse :

ਜਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਥਾਉ

Jith Ghatt Vasai Paarabreham Soee Suhaavaa Thhaao ||

Because, He goes there where He is called upon. If we call Him from our within, it is there where He comes and stays.

Sat Sree Akal.
