His father was Santokh Singh. He was shot dead..I heard that there were many rumors afloat about why anyone would kill Santokh Singh. One of the rumors was that a deranged person thought that Santokh Singh was acting as a Congress stooge . So he killed Santokh Singh. --- a very strange case indeed.

That deranged person was his friend. If i remember his last nae was Sandhu. It was jealousy that prompted him for this act.

He himself was also shot dead on the spot.

http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/49086-finally-the-truth-about-sant-bhindranwale-open-your-eyes-and-read-it/

Jathedar Santokh Singh was shot dead on 21st December, 1981. He was a great friend of Bhindranwale and was close to Indira Gandhi. Bhindranwale came to Delhi to attend the Bhog ceremony of Jathedar Santokh Singh, which took place in G.K. 1 at his residence. Giani Zail Singh attended the function to mourn the death of the Delhi Sikh leader. I accompanied him. Sant Bhindranwale was sitting in front row. The Giani was also seated there. Not a word was exchanged between them. Soon after the Bhog the Giani left. Photographs of them both sitting together were published in the newspapers. On the way back, the Giani told me that he had seen Bhindranwale for the first time. I particularly asked him “everyone believes that you have promoted him in politics and how come you did not see him earlier?” He told me that it was all a canard spread by Darbara Singh in order to malign him in the eyes of the Congress High Command. He said, in 1978 there could have been a chance meeting when both were invited to a function at Baba Bakala. At that time, Giani Zail Singh left after his speech and Bhindranwale had not reached in time. But he said on his own that he sincerely desired Bhindranwale to confine himself to religious and social spheres. He admitted that the Sant had a large following among Sikhs and his influence and energy could be utilized for the good of the State. He felt sad at the assassination of Jathedar Santokh Singh and described it as a big set-back because the latter could influence Sant Jarnail Singh. He failed to name any other person who could be entrusted with this task. He was sure, Darbara Singh could spoil the political atmosphere and Punjab would suffer a lot.

Yes. Pritam Singh Sandhu was his name. He was also a member of the DSGMC and Santokh Singh was the president DSGMC at that time.

However, Santokh Singh was very close to Indira Gandhi- (a family friend of Indira Gandhi) . He was very influential within Delhi Sikh community and he controlled the Sikh issues in Delhi for the Congress party. . Before the Nirankari episode of 1978, Delhi Sikhs were not too concerned whether Congressia or Akali Dal Punjab controlled the Delhi Sikh politics as long as someone has friendly links with the Delhi and Central governments and could get some things done for the Delhi Sikhs from the Government. So, Santokh Singh was their favorite. But after 1978 things started to change . But Santokh Singh continued to be staunch supporter of Congress party and Indira Gandhi. And the majority of Delhi Sikhs supported him. Sandhu started to oppose him . For that reason, word “deranged - pagal “ was used for Sandhu by the Congressi Sikhs /Nationalist/ Desh bhagat Sikhs- ( by the supporters of Santokh Singh and Indira Gandhi).

However, there was an other word that became very popular with the journalists, the Congress party and the “comrades” after the killing of Santokh Singh. That word was “Sikh terrorist”. When he was shot , Santokh Singh was taken to a hospital to remove the bullets from his body. Indira Gandhi personally went to the hospital to see him. At that time she is reported to have said that it was an act of a “Sikh terrorist” ( Or some thing like ‘it is the beginning of acts of Sikh terrorism').

There are many conspiracy theories on Jathedar Santokh Singh's death but the fact is

In 1978 Akali Dal was in power in Punjab. They failed to arrest Nirankari baba after massacre of sikhs in Punjab.

Had Santokh Singh been a congress man and harming sikh interests Sant Bhindrewale would not have gone to

his bhog. By your logic you will term Sant Bhindrewäle also a congress man?

But that is not a fact.

*** Did Jathedar Santokh Singh belong to Congress Party of India? ***

There is no doubt or any question about Jathedar Santokh Singh being a staunch supporter of Congress party and Indira Gandhi. Though in the beginning of his political career in Sikh politics he was allied to Akali Dal of Master Tara Singh but after the death of Tara Singh , he could not get along with the new Akali leadership of Punjab. He slowly moved over to Congressi Sikh camp.

Before the 1978 Nirankari episode the Sikh community of Punjab and Delhi was politically divided in three major groups ( 1) Akali Dal, (2) Congress party Sikhs, and (3) leftist/communist/comrades lead by Harkishan Singh Surjit et al. ( comrades also had a different theological point of view of Sikhi) . But after the rise of Sant ji as political leader, there became 4 groups. The fourth group was the followers of Sant ji. And it gained much more following than any of other groups. All the other three groups started to conspire againt Sant ji’s group.

Jathedar Santokh Singh in his last few years was through and through in Congress Party Sikhs. He was the Sikhs leader in Delhi.

Below is an excerpt from a news item published in ‘ The Tribune’ of 25 Sept. 2003

The Congress had virtually controlled Sikh socio-religious affairs through Jathedar Santokh Singh till he was shot dead in early 80s. After his killing, the DSGMC held no elections for more than 15 years during which the Congress lost its Sikh support base because of Operation Blue Star and the 1984 riots.

With the BJP coming to power in Delhi, general elections to the DSGMC were held in 1995, which the Akalis swept, ousting Congress loyalists from the committee. However, in last year’s general elections, the SAD was ousted, thanks to a fierce anti-Badal campaign led by Mr Sarna, who was supported by Mr Tohra, then at war with Mr Badal. But Mr Sarna refused to merge his faction with the SAD despite his mentor Tohra making up with Mr Badal three months ago, saying it would dilute the separate identity of his group.

his bhog. By your logic you will term Sant Bhindrewäle also a congress man?

But that is not a fact.

Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale was not a Congressia. His attending the bhog of Santokh Singh, a congressia, does not make Sant ji a Congressia. His relations with Jathedar Santokh Singh began to develop from a few years before the 1978 Nirankari episode when Santji’s activities were more of a preacher. Sant ji respected Jathedar Santokh Singh a great deal because unlike the Akali leaders in Punjab, Santokh Singh was able to do a lot for the Sikhs in Delhi albeit because of his good relations with the Central Government and Delhi State Government.

I think , he attended the bhog out of respect for Jathedar Santokh Singh as a sincere Sikh who did a great deal for Delhi Sikhs and not because of his political alliance with Santokh Singh. I believe Sant ji would have attended a bhog of any of Akali leaders, had they died. It were the Akalis (Longowal, Tohra, Badal and Balwant Singh) who concocted the stories of Sant ji being a Congressia because of his respect for Santokh Singh as a sincere person. These people tried to defame Santji by trying to show Sant ji to be secretly in congress group. This was their try to break Sikhs away from him. But they did not succeed.

Jathedar Santokh Singh was a Sikh and never a card holder of congress. When certain forces failed to dislodge him from Delhi

gurughars they used Nirlep Kaur and her private force to capture Guru ghars by force.

Sant ji was very close to Santokh singh and his family because of their love for sikhi. If you watch the above video carefully,

Manjit Singh states that they knew Sant Bhindrewale much better than others. He is speaking truth.

When DDA (delhi development authority) was formed they were not giving any site for existing Gurudwara sahib in Delhi greater kailash.

Santokh singh was the one who earmarked site for Gurudwara and compelled DDA to grant that site.

We should not label a man wrongly to further our own ägenda.Like that Sant ji was called a congress agent? But that is not a fact..

As I noted during the show, whether you agree with Sardar Manjit Singh GK or not, you have to give him credit for having the courage to express his thoughts without fear or favour. Too often our leaders speak with forked tongues and will say whatever they think might be popular. I also think his rejection of a Sikh separatist agenda should not be interested as him being 'anti-panthic'. The reality is that the Khalistan agenda has to date been very poorly articulated and this should be a wake-up call for those that support the legitimate demand for Sikh independence. Indeed, it would be great if Khalistani leaders came to the SIkh Channel and presented their case in front of live a learned audience. Unless advocates of Khalistan are able to move from hollow slogans to a real vision for the emancipation of all Panjabis and ultimately all Indians, then I am afraid, there is little future for that agenda.

In this programme Manjit Singh GK offered a very clear vision of how to save Sikhs and Sikhi. By drawing parallels with the Jews, he emphasised the importance of building a highly educated, globally orientated nation. He also correctly identified that the crisis of Sikhi and Sikhs, particularly in rural parts of Panjab is as much related to dramatic social changes to the social, cultural and economic fabric associated with rapid urbanisation, globalisation and new social media as it is to the failures of government. The solution therefore is tom open our eyes to such momentous changes rather than to simply blame the politicians or to constantly rely on conspiracy theories. Today, through strengthening our existing institutions such as the DSGPC and SGPC and by building new progressive institutions, the Sikhs can have a real future. Failure to do so will certainly result in the ongoing demise of a once proud people and nation. Today, we need to move away from Sikhs as sadhus - which is the image being promoted by many of the so called 'dharmic' jathebandhis, particularly those led by a baba's - but of humanitarians, scholars, scientists, ecologists, entrepreneurs, intellectuals, journalists, film makers, media personalities and peace activists. Sadly a nation of once proud Saints, Scholars, Soldiers, is being led by those who do not even have the capacity to understand not respond to my argument in any thoughtful way.

When you are few in number then the only way to survive, as the Jews have demonstrated for the past 2500 years, is to focus on quality and brain power. Rather than retreat to the Gurdwaras and dears, to spend every spare minute in ritualistic meditation sealed off from the rest of the world, we now more than ever before need to recound the practical example set by Dhan Guru Nanak Ji, who confronted the 'holy men' in the temples and deras and sites of pilgrimage, the rich and the powerful. Who, from Sri Lanka in the South to Bangladesh and Sikhim in the East, from Tibbet and China in the North to Mecca, Bagdad and even Italy in the West, he embarked on his own revolutionary struggle to unite humanity, to rid us of irrational superstitious beliefs and to bring peace and co-operation to what was and remains a divided world.

If you want Sikhi to survive, give up the rituals and fancy dress and put gurbani into practice. Reach out to others and share with them the living universal social spirituality for the modern age which Sikhi most definitely is. Putting aside the politics, there can be no doubt that Manjit Singh is perhaps the first and only Sikh Leader from India that has ever articulated so clearly such a vision for the future of Sikhs. It will be a tragedy if blinded by our own unquestioning political and dera affiliations we fail to see this opportunity to wake-up and sieze the moment.

Dr Gurnam Singh,

(Please note these comments are my personal views and not those of the Sikh Channel. I very much welcome and intelligent and critical response to my argument)

Indeed, if we want Sikhi to survive we ALL need to make the journey from Manmukhs to Gursikhs/ Gurmukhs.

Bhai Manjit Singh made some interesting points, notably choosing to be Hindustani rather than Khalistani and standing firmly by the Akali Dal alliance with BJP. The explanations for his and the Akali Dal position were not convincing. Bhai Manjit Singh's comments were seen as an anathema and we could feel the anger of the audience.

I looked at the current 'Constitution of Shiromani Akali Dal' (English version) and in 12 pages, found the word 'Sikh' only once. The word 'Guru' was not mentioned. The words 'Akali Dal' were mentioned 70 times! You can view the document here http://eci.nic.in/eci_main/mis-Political_Parties/Constitution_of_Political_Parties%5CConstitution_of_SAD.pdf

Looking back at the Anandpur Resolution (which the Akalis first introduced) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anandpur_Resolution. The word 'Sikh' is mentioned 20 times in a single section called 'Purpose' and the words 'Akali Dal' mentioned only twice (strange how things turn around...). Please read.

On behalf of the Sikh Sangat, who has given the Akali's a mandate on their current policy decisions? I believe the Sikh Panth does not trust the current leadership and do not think they are representing Sikhs or Sikh views and concerns very well. We all know politics in India is corrupt and a sham.

Badal has been Chief Minister of Punjab for a staggering 5 times. He is generally regarded as the second most powerful Sikh leader worldwide, after India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh. But, what are his grand list of achievements for Sikh's? What will he be remembered for? As a man that has done little for Sikhs.

Badal has been reluctant to help the Sikh's because he does not want his family (and those that surround him) to lose power. Is he really scared of those still in jail like Bhai Rajoana? who would become the real Sikh leader if allowed...

Unfortunately, Badal Dal (as they are now known) also knows that for Sikh's, the 'Congress' party are NOT an option. No point in even discussing those murderers. So, we have BJP and Congress, playing Sikh against Sikh. Puppet masters playing the foolish puppets against each other.

The Sikh Panth needs to awake, which is why Badal Dal, BJP and Congress have allowed the Sikh youth to remain in their drug infested states. Badals focus has now turned to the UK, first the start of Akaal TV and now the DSGPC visit. They will never allow the strong independant Sikh voice of the Sikh Channel to establish itself in Punjab (Please support the Sikh Channel).

The 'Khalistan agenda' is very straight forward and needs little articulation. In basic terms, Sikhs are fighting for their homeland and for their survival. Sikhs are fed up of being attacked, both overtly and covertly. Why are Sikh's so passionate about Khalistan? Maybe it's because time and time again Sikh's have been tricked, lied to, victimised, attacked and murdered by others, including those within the Indian Government and then denied justice. Who is willing to help or defend the Sikh's? How will Sikh genocide be stopped? Certainly not with cowardly hindus that attack only with organised support and large numbers.

Whatever our views, it now seems clear from Bhai Manjit Singh's interview that the Akali's do NOT support Khalistan and Sikhs need to support Dal Khalsa.

Sikh's in the UK are viewed as nationalists and Bhai Manjit Singhs visit has been reported (as a Badal Dal mission) to contain Sikh nationalist activity. The delegation was reportedly accompanied by two Chandigarh based journalists. http://www.sikhsiyasat.net/2013/09/20/manjit-singh-gks-encounter-with-sikh-diaspora-in-uk-and-indian-states-efforts-to-contain-sikh-nationalist-activity/

"Badal Dal is playing a pro-active role in containing the activities of Sikh nationalist groups and keeping the Sikh nationalist leaders behind the bars."

For those who fell for Bhai Manjit Singh's comments... Sant Sipahi may not be for you or other Massands...

Putting aside politics, as individuals we all should focus on Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and make the journey from Manmukhs to Gursikhs/ Gurmukhs.

He seems very straightforward person.

As I noted during the show, whether you agree with Sardar Manjit Singh GK or not, you have to give him credit for having the courage to express his thoughts without fear or favour. Too often our leaders speak with forked tongues and will say whatever they think might be popular

Granted the man is articulate....well spoken and a confident speaker. Thus he can say things and uneducated pendu types in India have no choice but to accept what he says as the truth given the quality of delivery. But you, my young western educated brothers and sisters, are no gullible country bumpkins, even though he talked to you as if you are. You need to closely examine some of the things he said to know how honest, truthful and righteous he really is. At one point in the question and answer session he actually says he and his akali dal are to thank for the landmark UK Mandla case (Sikhs are a race case). He said the groundbreaking ruling in the 1970's came because his party in India put pressure on the UK Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher. You see, he and his party say these things all the time in India and because the gullible masses are too ill-educated to know better they lap it up as gospel. He forgets he's now talking to well educated western born Sikhs who know not only that Prime Ministers in western democracies do not pass judgements in courts of law but also how it was the British Sikhs that influenced Lord Denning in his judgement.

I also think his rejection of a Sikh separatist agenda should not be interested as him being 'anti-panthic'

In the immediate days after their Sikh Channel q&a session, both men have been widely pictured in the Indian news media attending functions at the Indian High Commission in London. In those news articles for the Indian media they openly state how their mission here in the UK is to convert 'hardline' Sikhs back into the pro-India fold. For this 'mission' they enjoy the support of both the Punjab government and central govt in India.

Beware my friends. Beware of men that know how to communicate. Just because they know how to communicate it doesn't mean what they say is good.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
