Sheikh Farid Of Gurbani

The Sheikh Farid of gurbani is this man

who descends on the spirtual throne of sheikh farid who came 200 years before guru nanak dev ji but sheikh brahm met guru nanak dev ji. But what kind of person was brahm, was he a true muslim doing his namaz following islam properly trying to give dawah to guru nanak with kitman and taquia holding back and acting tolerant? Or was he a sincere follower of guru nanak rejecting his previous throne? What context is his bani? Does guru ji supercede his bani or is he equal to guru nanak dev ji? If he is equal why not just follow brahm and not over burden ourselves with too many spiritual peers and do namaz? If we were to do namaz shoulder to shoulder with muslims this would solve our political problems with pakistan and save thousands of people from being killed in the near future over religious divide. If we truly respect sheikh brahm and see him as a path to khudha why not embrace him all the way? If sheikh brahm is a muslim why is he praising guru and using the terms of gurmat?

Sheikh Brahm

Sheikh Brahm, generally known as Sheikh Farid, Sheikh Brahm who was the eleventh in succession to Baba Farid Ganjshakar. a mausoleum of a Sufi saint that lies just on the India-Pakistan border in Punjab to pay obeisance. The mausoleum of Pir Baba Sheikh Brahm lies near Mianwali Uttar village in the Khemkaran sector on the Indian side of Punjab.

According to villagers, the Pir Baba was a disciple of Guru Nanak. Legend has it that Guru Nanak visited Sheikh Brahm before heading for Mecca.

The Sheikh asked the Guru to explain,"You say ,'There is only one God, why should there be a second?', and I (Sheikh) say:

There is one Lord and two ways; Which shall I adopt, and which reject?"

The Guru replied:

"There is one Lord and one way; Adopt one and reject the other." Thou art the tablet, O Lord, Thou art the pen, and Thou art the writing, Speak of the one God; O Nanak, why should there be second." (// Malar ki Mohalla 1, 28-2, p-1291

Guru Nanak Dev Ji And Sheikh Brahm

One day, when Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was going from village to village, He went to a village called Paak Patan. The holy man of that village was Sheik Brahm. He asked Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji a question:

"Oh Nanak, these Hindus: they deny the God of Islam. They deny Allah, but these Muslims accuse the Hindus of worshipping too many gods. You Nanak, you say that there is only one God? There is only one way? How can you say this? This can't be!"

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji clearly and easily said that these ignorant people impose darkness upon themselves. These people who see divisions among each other, they know nothing. They know nothing of who or what God is. These same divisions are all around us. In school, at work. I go to high school, and I see that people discriminate each other. They say, "That guy's a 'muzi', that guy's a 'pun', that guy's a 'hindu', that guy's an 'apna/giani'. They look at this, and they say those words, but do we ever say that there's one God? Do we ever focus on that one point? Do we even remember that point? That the person next to you is the same as you, that you belong to the same God, the same Father? These divisions mean nothing. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says,

hi(n)dhoo thurak dhuhaa(n) naebaeraa ||1|| rehaao ||
He adminstrates both Hindus and Muslims.

A father never loves his children unequally. He always loves them equally. The same goes for our Father. He loves us equally. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji always said that these names don't ever matter.

Controversy

There is a controversy that the couplets of Sheikh farid in Guru Granth Sahib was actually related to Sheikh Brahm not with Sheikh farid Shakarganj, who was called sheikh farid as guru nanak met him during his travels.

Bani of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is of Bhagat Farid Sani who is commonly known as Sheikh Brahm of Patan. Many janamsakhis mention Bhagat Ji meeting Guru Nanak Sahib. The fact that Bhagat Ji's bani is written in Gurmukhi according to Gurbani viyakaran and use of words like "Gur", "Prabh" and "Saadh" prove that Bhagat Ji had met Guru Sahib, learnt Gurmukhi and was heavily influenced by Gurmat. Had it been Bani of Fareed who lived 3 centuries before Guru Sahib's parkash then it (his bani) wouldn't have been in Gurmukhi rather in Arabic and/or Persian. Some say that his bani was translated to Gurmukhi by Guru Sahib but this doesn't make any sense because Bani in Guru Granth Sahib is 'Dhur Ki Bani' and is revealed by Waheguru. Translated message is never the original message and hence the Bani wouldn't be 'Dhur Ki Bani'. Besides, there was no 3 centuries old pothi of Fareed Shakkarganj in Guru Arjan Dev Ji's possession. Muslims always rever Mohammad and advocate Quranic teachings. Bani of Bhagat Fareed Ji rejects Islamic practices. Studying Bani of Bhagat Ji clears all the doubts. People can read Bhagat Bani Itihaas for more details.

Story of Sheikh Brahm (Sheikh Farid)

Sheikh Brahm, generally known as Sheikh Farid, had reached the age of ninety. After a long period of hard penance and prayer he still felt a vacantness in his heart. The occult powers, the adoration of the world, and constrained control of the desires had come to him; but the spontaneous flow of peace and at-one-ment, the perennial source of heavenly joy, both in period of suffering and pleasure, was lacking. For nights and days he longingly prayed for this blessing to come. Guru Nanak at this time had come to Talwandi to meet Rai Bular. There the heart strung longing of Sheikh Farid reached him. With Bala and Mardana he came to Pakpattan and sat in a jungle nine miles from the town. He told Mardana to play on the Rebab and he himself sang a Divine song.

Thou art thyself, the tablet, the pen and the written word upon it Sayeth Nanak it is Thou and Thou alone and none else.

This attracted a disciple of Sheikh Farid, who had come there to fetch firewood for the langar (free kitchen). He fell at Guru Nanaks feet, and requested him to repeat what he had sung. Guru Nanak did so, and the disciple learnt the couplet by heart. With the load of wood on his head, and the couplet ringing in his brain, the disciple hastened to Pakpattan, threw down the load of wood in the langar, and went straight to Sheikh Farid and said, My master! Today I have seen a Faquir, not a Faquir but God himself!

Hast thou merely seen him or brought some valuable asset from him, spoke out the Sheikh.

Yes, said the disciple, I have brought a divine jewel. Thou art thyself, the tablet, the pen and the written word upon it Sayeth it is Thou and Thou alone and none else.

The electric spark of the sacred words touched the heart of Sheikh Farid. He ordered his disciples to take him in a palanquin to where Guru Nanak was. As soon as Guru Nanak came within his sight, Sheikh Farid got out of the palanquin, and walked slowly towards Guru Nanak. With great reverence he bowed down to touch the feet of the Satguru, but Guru stood up and held up his hands within his own. Then wit great love, they kissed each others hands, and sat down. After a few minutes of silent communion of souls, Sheikh Farid asked, Tell me O God-sent messenger of the Almighty, the way to an unbreakable Divine union.

O Sheikh, said the Baba, Ours is to be like a true wife, whose husband has gone on a merchandise tour in distant lands. The wife ever remembers him and keeps faithful to him, in thought, word and action. The husband, when he returns, is overjoyed at her faithful remembrance and love. He puts his hand on her head and says, Thou art mine and I am thine. So we should, O Sheikh, lose ourselves wholly in the Divine Being; forsake all attachment to the flesh, and think of none but Him, both within and without. With constant humility, prayer, Divine Meditation, considering the service of our fellowmen as the service of Him, and the company of the illumined, the spark of Divine light springs up in the human heart and the mind gets illumined, seeing none else but God both within and without. We have to serve and meditate and yet feel that service and meditation is His.

SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGIONS, By MIR MOHAMMAD IBRAHIM (Disclaimer: the author seems very biased in many ways, so take what he says with a grain of salt)

Page 43-44:

"Guru Granth Sahib gives us some hymns composed by two Muslim Bhaktas, Sheikh Farid and Sheikh Bhikan. According to Macauliffe, the verses attributes to Sheikh Farid, born in the 12th century, were in reality composed by Sheikh Brahm (Ibrahim). It is said that Guru Nanak has met Sheikh Brahm.

It has been said that Guru Nanak took the Prophet of Islam as his model, and in this connection our attention has been drawn to his insistence on one God and no other. His debt to the Sufis has been traced in his teaching on four stages of the spiritual path, ie. Saran Khand, Jnan Khand, Karan Khand and Sach Khand, which, it is said, correspond to the Sufi Shariat, Marifat, Ufwa and Lahut. Moreover, he seems influenced by Alaui-Haq, Jalal-ud-din, Bhukari, Makhdum Jahaniyan and Sheikh Ismail Bukhari on the one hand, and Sankaracharya regarding monotheism on the other."

Saint Sheikh Farid

Saint Sheikh Farid [? - 1552], also known as Baba Farid, Sheikh Brahm or Farid Sani, was the tenth successor to the famous Fariduddin Shakarganj [1173 - 1266], a Muslim Sufi of the Chishti Sufi order who was the first major poet of the Punjabi language.

Saint Sheikh Farid met Guru Nanak Dev in Pakpattan, where a disciple of the Sheikh had overheard Guru Nanak, along with his two disciples Bhai Bala and Mardana, singing hymns about God. The disciple went to his master, Saint Sheikh Farid, and at once upon hearing the hymn from his disciple he set off to meet Guru Nanak himself, which gave him the peace and joy he was looking for.

Since there is so much already posted above, just follow the following two links for even more indepth discussion. Beware of the Muslim website though (just like the biased Muslim author above). These Muslims have fallen in the trap of fighting over whether Sheikh Farid was Hindu or Muslim. Not only that, but these Muslim writers very much like to downplay Guru Nanak Dev Jee's Greatness and meetings with Sheikh Farid.....

To be honest i'm skeptical of nanaksar samprayada simply because of the donation requirements, the barsi donations that keep going on in those smagams and the whole be a good muslim teachings, being a good muslim contradicts sikhi. Things like cutting your hair and eating meat are sunah but go against sikhi. Besides which these teachings have made girls feel it's acceptable to marry muslims later on being lured they convert. It might sound far fetched but alot of these girls who convert in one phase refer to nand singh's teachings. Which don't sound like what guru gobind singh taught in dasam bani. Nand Singh's popularity in the 40s was a time when dasam granths parchar wasn't on the peak, as the rise of dasam granth understanding has taken place more and more people are understanding true sikhi.

So which Baba Farid do we assume the bani is from ?? :stupidme:

Shaikh Ibrahim was the eleventh descendant of Faridu’ddin. The following is the genealogical order:

Hazrat Baba Faridu’ddin Ganj-i-shakar

Diwan Badr-ud-Din Sulaiman

Diwan ‘Ala-uddin Mauj-i-Darya

Diwan Mu’izzuddin

Pir Fazl-ud-din

Khwaja Diwan Munawar Shah

Pir Diwan Baha-uddin Harun

Pir Shaikh Ahmad Shah

Pir Ata-ullah

Khwaja Shaikh Muhammad

Shaikh Ibrahim Farid Sani

More information:

"All Janamsakhis including Suraj Prakash agree that this baani belongs to Sheikh Ibrahim, the successor of Farid Shakarganj and a contemporary of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee.

It's absurd to believe that Farid Shakarganj was a poet. His own desendents don't believe that he wrote any baani in even Persian, let alone Punjabi. Giani Gurdit Singh has already published a monumental book on this subject, and no scholar to this date has been able to refute the truth written by Giani jee.

Kulbir Singh"

"Please refer to Giani Gurdit Singh jee's book on history of Bhagat Baani in which he has detailed the back for the above stated claims. Baba Farid Shakarganj's own descendents have stated on numerous ocasions that Baba jee never wrote any kalaam in Punjabi.

Kulbir Singh"

"Like Bhai Kulbir Singh has said, his followers accept the fact that shakarganj did not compose any material. A book written in 1354-55 by Mulana Hamid Shayer has stated this many times that Shakarganj did not compose any works nor did his Successor Nizamudin.Even the name attributed to Shakarganj has changed over time this will inevitably give way for other changes and attributes to him.

Khalik Nizami a scholar of the House of Nizamudin has written" Masood Shakarganj used to call himself Mehaz Masood". In fact Masood is his real name but unlike Bhai Ibrahim who used be called Shaiek Farid Sani, Masood went by the name Mehaz Masood. Therefore if he was to compose any works it would mention the name he went by.Shakarganj was a nick name given to Masood because of the story related to his mother giving him Shakar for doing Bhagthee.

Masood was born in 1265-66 his Grandfather was an Iranian and so was his mother with that background and the strong influence of farsi it is hard to see him being the founder of Punjabi literature. It is one thing to learn a different language but to claim he founded the punjabi language is by far a long shot.

To further prove that Masood did not compose Gurbanee a scholar by the name of Professor Khalik Ahmed Nizami has written a book in English called "Life & Times of Shaiek Faridudin Gange-Shakar" published in 1955 he has written " Shaikh Nizam-u-d-din Auliya and his successors have given interesting details about the Shaikh, his literary tastes, his daily life, etc.Had it really been a work of the great saint they could not possibly have ignored it. It is, therefore, futile to attempt a decision on external evidence (He is talking about so called alleged works by Masood by certain people). The matter must be considered in the light of internal evidence.

He further goes onto say “Linguistic analysis of these Shaloks reveals that they contain idioms and expressions of a much latter date. The more deplume used in these Shalokas in Farid, but the Shaikh used to refer to himself, as Mas'ud, not as Farid. That these Shalokas are not the actual compositions of the great saint seems almost certain, but the fact cannot be denied that they contain some traditional sayings of the Shaikh" "Shaikh Ibrahim, a contemporary of Guru Nanak, is probably the real author of these Shalokas".

Having said all this the strongest evidence to claim who wrote the Fareed Bani is the meanings of Fareed Banee which point to the fact that they could only be written on meeting Siri Guru Nanak Dev Jee. A number of Janam sakhi accounts, Giani Gurdit Singh, Professor Sahib Singh all focus on this point in their writings.

Sukhdev Singh"

"Excellent points Veer Sukhdev Singh jeeo.

There is another interesting point that Gursikhs should note. We all know that language evolves over time and changes a bit over time. It is impossible to believe that the language used in Baba Farid jee's saloks is 300 years prior to the time of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee. Just read Punjabi at the time of Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee as compared to today's Punjabi. Look how different it is. But if you look at baani of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and Baba Farid jee, you notice that the language used in both baanis is contemporary. I quote one shabad of Baba jee from Soohi Raag, in response to which Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee wrote a shabad:

Baba jee writes:

Siri Guru jee replies:

Baba jee writes:

Siri Guru jee replies:

Baba jee writes:

Siri Guru jee replies:

Baba jee writes:

Siri Guru jee replies:

And while Baba jee says that 'ਸਹ ਕੇਰੇ ਬੋਲਾ', Siri Guru jee says 'ਸਹ ਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੋਲਾ'. Siri Guru continues to say that Vaheguru's is extremely pyara - 'ਸਹੁ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ'

Just note the language in baanis of Baba jee and Siri Guru jee. Do you think that the Punjabi used by Baba jee above is 300 years older than what Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee used? The answer is clear. As the matter of fact, it seems clear that Siri Guru jee is answering spiritual questions of Baba jee. The conversation is taking place at one time. Baba jee is stating his spiritual avastha with great sorrow - ਬੇੜਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਨ ਸਕਿਓ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੀ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ but Siri Guru jee's words encourage him and solve the spiritual riddly Baba jee was facing at that time.

If you read these two shabads side by side, you can conjecture what kind of conversation took place between Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaj and Baba Sheikh Ibrahim also known as Farid Saani, in their two meetings recorded by Sikh history.

Baba jee was thrilled after meeting Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee because his spiritual riddles were resolved and if you read the following shabads of Baba jee in Soohi Raag, you can tell he is talking about Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee:

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਲੀ ॥

ਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਲਹੁ ਬੇਲੀ ॥3॥

Just open the eyes of your Bibek Budh and see whom Baba Farid jee is referring to ‘saadh’ in the above quote. Could Baba Farid Shakarganj of 12 century, who was a migrant from Iran and who’s mother tongue was not Punjabi, say that when he met the Sadhu (Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee) by the grace of Prabhu, he then realized that Allah had become his friend. Muslims don’t believe in meeting Sadhus and then realizing God. Even the Sufis who existed much later don’t call their Gurus Sadhu. They call them Murshids. It is clear that Baba Farid jee met Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee and become his Sikh. In our Janamsakhis it is clearly written that Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee went to see Farid Sani two times, second time to check his spiritual progress.

Daas,

Kulbir Singh"

I agree with the above with regards to the identity of Sheikh Farid.

However, some others may believe otherwise and I would just like to remind all that knowing the ID of Sheikh Farid is not as important as knowing what his messages were in gurbani !

His Identity is important because it changes the context of the messages aswell, especially in parchar because if we are being told about a man who was guru nanaks devotee things change compared to a muslim who went around converting infidels who is made out to be guru nanaks equal and for some muslims guru nanaks teacher where guru is taught to be inferior to him. The message impact change also changes the themes and tones of gurbani on topics such as meat for one or fasting or passing or devoution

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
