Soohee, Kabeer Jee:

Thharehar Kanpai Baalaa Jeeo ||

My innocent soul trembles and shakes.

Worried about dying and the fear of death. Just the thought sends a tremble to one who is scared and not confident of dying.

Knowing that you have not realized God or lived with the naam enshrined in your heart.

Naa Jaano Kiaa Karasee Peeo ||1||

I do not know how my Husband Lord will deal with me. ||1||

In this tuk, just think 1stly why a wife would be worried how the husband would deal with her ??

Mostly, if she feels she has been UNFAITHFUL !!!

In the same way, the manmukh soul bride feels she has been unfaithful to husband lord.

Rain Gee Math Dhin Bhee Jaae ||

The night of my youth has passed away; will the day of old age also pass away?

The term 'night' is used for youth and ''day'' for old age.

The youth has been passed in the darkness like being intoxicated and lost in maya. Will I make the most of it in this old age ??

NOTE- night comes first because after the night one wakes up for the day !!- in this case, it also implying that I have been asleep in the dark youth and now I have woken in the day, will is still remain as asleep and unaware of the lord ??

Bhavar Geae Bag Baithae Aae ||1|| Rehaao ||

My dark hairs, like bumble bees, have gone away, and grey hairs, like cranes, have settled upon my head. ||1||Pause||

In line with the above where the dark youth and being asleep is signified by the loss of physical appearance of black hairs.

The crane comes and rests 'uninvited' like the grey hairs to change the appearance further.

Therefore, in this rahao line, the importance is about how we should not remain as lost and asleep as in the past but we should embrace and realize the lord now!!!!

The END is getting closer and one shouldn't waste their time.

Kaachai Karavai Rehai N Paanee ||

Water does not remain in the unbaked clay pot;

In most of Kabeerji's gurbani, the clay pot represents the body.

The clay pot is unbaked and the water represents the soul and/or mind, which does not remain intact forever.

The mind wanders and is never steady whereas the soul eventually departs the clay body.

Hans Chaliaa Kaaeiaa Kumalaanee ||2||

When the soul-swan departs, the body withers away. ||2||

The swan is signifying the soul which departs leaving the body to rot.

NOTE- here the 'Swan' is used and above the 'crane' is used.

According to Bhai Gurdas Ji, the swan represents the gurmukh as such who resides in the mansarovar (sacred pool of mind)

The crane goes to the dirty pond.

It's quite a difficult and tricky one to work out exactly what the message and poetry is here, but it is implying that the soul-swan(gurmukh) and water in pot(manmukh) will still BOTH depart from the non-permanent body.

Kuaar Kanniaa Jaisae Karath Seegaaraa ||

I decorate myself like a young virgin;

A virgin or unmarried decorates herself FOR Husband that is Not there!! SO, she displays 'outwardly displays' that do NOT gain any attention of Husband or lover.

This tuk has many multiple meanings such as the popular Kabirji's empty ritual quotes with regards to blind outwardly displays trying to get the attention of the Lord.

But they gain absolutely nothing, if the naam of the lord is NOT WITHIN.

In the same way, the Soul bride can show all the outward displays and wear the bana trying to look like a devotee, but because the True intention and heart is not there, then nothing is gained.

The MAYA trapped mind can fool one self that there display or bana is getting the attention of the Lord, but we must learn to overcome this control of maya by conquering our minds

Kio Raleeaa Maanai Baajh Bhathaaraa ||3||

But how can I enjoy pleasures, without my Husband Lord? ||3||

How can the Truth be enjoyed if you are not ONE with Ek onkaar ??

Kaag Ouddaavath Bhujaa Piraanee ||

My arm is tired, driving away the crows.

What does one gain by doing all the false and blind outwardly displays ??

In the same way, what does one gain by driving away the crows all their life ??- they spend energy on just waving them away without any bettering or gain !!

The arm just ends up tired and used for NOTHING of Divine and spiritual gain.

Kehi Kabeer Eih Kathhaa Siraanee ||4||2||

Says Kabeer, this is the way the story of my life ends. ||4||2||

Spend our whole life chasing the maya and using our bodies just for maya gains. We never accomplish the Lord.

There are so many of us that are in a cycle of work, earn and accumulate or save. They work 18-20 hours a day busting their own bodies trying to build bank balances. The figures keep going up and down but the person's spiritual attainment does not even rise an inch.

A WHOLE life is wasted and nothing accomplished in terms of merging with the divine.

Kabeerji, is giving us the overall message of MAKING the CHOICE between MAYA and the True LORD.

Ask yourself'' What will I REALLY gain???''

Make the choice from the heart with true intentions without letting your own mind ''fool' you !!!

This shabad goes a few steps further than the ones that highlight false rituals and practices, because this one shows ''How our mind and maya can fool us into thinking we ARE making the right choices''

I love the way Kabirji gives this shabad as a warning for us all before we realize that it is too late without highlighting pitfalls of not finding God such as narak, pain, punishment..etc..etc..

The above shabad is just before the previous shabad on ang 792.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਅਵਤਰਿ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
Avathar Aae Kehaa Thum Keenaa ||
Since your birth, what have you done?
Raam Ko Naam N Kabehoo Leenaa ||1||
You have never even chanted the Name of the Lord. ||1||
Raam N Japahu Kavan Math Laagae ||
You have not meditated on the Lord; what thoughts are you attached to?
Mar Jaeibae Ko Kiaa Karahu Abhaagae ||1|| Rehaao ||
What preparations are you making for your death, O unfortunate one? ||1||Pause||
What thoughts are we attached to ??
Is it the lord or is it what and where shall i be in a few years ?? how will my kids be taken care of??
How will i surviive when i'm a pensioner ?? who will take care of me???
-If someone denies that these are not the thoughts they live for, then that person will NOT have a job or a bank account!!
Shouldn't we attach as much thought to our waheguru with the help of our shabad guru and simran ??
Shouldn't we worry about when that judgement day may come ??
We don't ever know when that moment of death may come, but we are never prepared for it.
Gurbani is telling us that every living moment could be our very last (ant kaal)
Dhukh Sukh Kar Kai Kuttanb Jeevaaeiaa ||
Through pain and pleasure, you have taken care of your family.
Marathee Baar Eikasar Dhukh Paaeiaa ||2||
But at the time of death, you shall have to endure the agony all alone. ||2||
Pain and pleasure are handled in the family because we are NOT on our own. Thus pain in a family can get handled by sharing it and overcoming it by handling the situations together.
In the same way we celebrate our joys and pleasures together by distributing sweets, singing and dancing.
However, the 2nd tuk emphasises that we shall have to handle the agony of death ALONE!
no family or anyone else will tag along to share it.
WHY the AGONY of Death ??
Because, quite simply we will not be prepared or ready for it when it comes by surprise.
Kanth Gehan Thab Karan Pukaaraa ||
When you are seized by the neck, then you shall cry out.
Kehi Kabeer Aagae Thae N Sanmhaaraa ||3||1||
Says Kabeer, why didn't you remember the Lord before this? ||3||1||
Kabirji's shabads are often linked and this is how some of the mystery metaphors are solved.
In another shabad, he makes the analagy of death and being at the court of the lord similar to being summoned before a court here as a prisoner with
-chains on your neck - to drag you
-and steeel balls tied to your feet- to stop you escaping.
Thus, in the above you ARE SEIZED by THE NECK and taken to his court of Dharamraj, where you shall cry out in pain because like a prisoner you will beg for ONE more chance to go back and correct yourself.
But it's too late to remember the Lord now, you've blown your chance by wasting a lifetime THINKING and PLANNING TOMORROW and WHAT you shall have MATERIALLY ACHIEVED.
BUT, that VERY TOMORROW could have always been your LAST DAY and you NEVER thought this or Planned !!
Kabeerji sums it up all very beautifully--- AMAZING !!!

The Word of the True Guru's Bani is the embodiment of Truth; through Gurbani, one becomes perfect.

    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
    • Good way of putting it, bro. One of the ongoing themes of Gurbani is the fake saint. Whether it's fake babas in Punjab or English-speaking personalities in the West, it's an continuing problem of religion through the centuries (and it's not exclusive to us by any means, this applies to all human societies).
    • First of all, while it's true that Gurbani says slandering a Saint has such-and-such effects, you can't do the reverse: You can't look and your situation and know for certain what caused it. We're not encouraged to mope over our situations but rather to accept the hukam (will). The last line of the very first pauri of Japji Sahib says to live in hukam: ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ hukam rajāī chalanā nānak likhiā nāl .1. O Nanak! By obeying, the pre-ordained order of the Lord's will. Secondly, the astpadhi from which you quoted the Sant ka dokhi verses has this verse at the end: ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ jis nō kripā karai tis āpan nām dēi . God gives His Name to those unto whom He shows His mercy. So ask for his mercy. Also check out the 7th Astpadi, which talks about the good effects of the sangat of a Sadhu: https://khojgurbani.com/shabad/271/709?highlighted_scripture_id=12007&highlighted_scripture_lang=gurmukhi&selected_content=gurbani I'm not getting into who is a "true" Sadhu in this post.
    • In langar it should be common sense for peopel to find a suitable space to sit. Normally in my local Singh Sabha gurdwara, there is enough space to sit, so I am able to find a space with enough space away from other people. There have been a few times, where there has been a lot of sangat and I have been forced onto a table.  In Slough and Southall Singh Sabha, Park Avenue, I will just sit near another group of men unless I am with family, but again there shouldn't be strict gender separation and instead common sense logic.
    • Yeh I could do to be honest. It's not really chardikala to be coming from the diwan hall and then sangat putting on shoes to go langar. I like sitting in the gurdwara with family, and there are spaces for this in bigger gurdwaras such as Slough, Southall, Coventry. In my current local area gurdwaras this is not really possible for weekly sangat, and also not for sangrand and gurpurb. Need to complain about these tendikalaUK practices  to be UK chardikala Singhs!
