Vidya guru/Ustad is a teacher whom you take gurmat vidya-training from - very common term among puratan samparda's like taksal, nirmale, sevapanthis, nihangs..vidya guru/ustad are used interchangeably

To original op question- no there is no maryada or ceremony that i am aware of.

This is an awkward area, as it can give you many different answers.

A true sikh only has the ONE GURU- Granth Sahib Ji.

I prefer to use the term vidya ustad or teacher/mentor.

As we have lots of deras and babas, that are mostly in it for themselves and not sikhism really, they get to be called 'GURU' either by the followers or they self claim.

I am just going to say, that a true gursikh does NOT need to be following any of these babas or deras ar ehtye are just like sects and diversions from true sikhi.

So, when some one says that it is all thanks their Guruji who is so and so from so and so, then you should take a step back and think !!

They will come to believe that it is their baba who can help enlighten them and ferry them across the world ocean !!1

When infact, the the only thing that gets enlightened is the bank account of so called fake Guru.

So, my question is what or whom are you really looking for ??

Or has some one led you to believe that you need a human guru besides SGGS ji to help ferry you across ????

You ses calling someone teacher/ustad/mentor is VERY different to calling them 'Guru'.
