I'm not saying that it is ok to touch feet of anyone. There is a huge different in cleaning shoes of Sangat and in touching feet of anyone.

You should only show such a sign of respect to any "individual" if you are totally sure that they do naam and baani abhyaasis. I don't really think we can get anything from anyone by touching their feet if they aren't in Sikhi.

Guru Pyari Sadh Sangat ji

You should touch the feet of Gursikhs, touch the feet of sewadars, touch the feet of God's beloved.

Man how many times do we read in Gurbani, search for the dust of the feet of saints, search for the dust of the feet of God's beloved.

"Nanak, Your slave, begs for this happiness: let me be the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||4||5||" SGGS

"O Siblings of Destiny, become the dust of the feet of the humble Saints." SGGS

"I applied the dust of the feet of the Saints to my face." SGGS WAHEGUROOOOOO!!! ^_^

You shouldn't touch anyone's feet just because they are older than you, one may be older than you, but if they got no knowledge of Sikhi, or love the almighty they are worthless,

"Without the Lord's Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed." SGGS

"They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2||" SGGS

They say with age comes wisdom, but if that person didn't recite gurbani, did sewa, or simran, they have wasted their precious jeevan, show them respect by giving them love, talking nice to them, but don't touch their feet!!!!!!!

My two cents.

i disagree with the whole concept of touching someone's feet

i think..

thoor mukh layee concept is metaphoric.. and not physical..

just like there are thousands of metaphors in gurbani to get the point across

Bowing & trying to touch the ANKLE of elders is punjabi culture (I barely notice anyone going all the way down to touch the feet, they just pretend too..), It's just like in japanese culture when they bow their head to respect.

There are no rules saying that u have to touch the feet.. or you have to do johra ghar sewa.. It's one choice, if that makes him/her feel better than it's fine.. BTW, if one do johra(Shoes) ghar sewa outside of gurdwara sahib, one get really anand.. It's just to train your mind to be humble.. :St:

Bhaji i have little knowledge about this...but here it goes..

i somewhat agree with Sikh 4 Life Veer, i also think it is metaphoric......but i think it is OK to touch ppl's knees so as to 'train the mind to be humble' as Vicky veerji said.

i think being the dust of the feet of humble Saints is actually to do a lot of Seva for the Panth....as Santan as plural is used for the whole commnity of Gursikhs......so follow their advice respect them.....so seva in every way for Panth....that i think is being the dust....

i also think such Gursikhs would not have anything against that we 'do not apply the dust of their feet to our faces' but instead they will also like us because of our dedication Santan (the Panth as whole)......so do seva in every manner as much as you can.... rolleyes.gif

Hanji, bilkul. one must not do matha theek to a person......as the Hukamnama sounds....

now their is a great difference between matha theek and sir chukanah

matha theek is like totaly lay down and take your head to the ground....but sir chukanah is like bowing your head as respect for fellow/elder Gursikh and also touch their knees as a sign of respect....that is it.

i remember i use to touch the knees of my mom and my grand parents, when i was a small kid....it was great feeling.....i was brought up to do so.....but they did n

ot say 'i have to do so'...but i learnt from others who did the same to their elders....so i did it too....i was just a kid....but it was great.... :D

never know why i stoped???

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

it is literal...

charan pahul was physically drinking water used to wash dust from gurus feet...

There is a sakhi where guru amardas jee wipes the dust off a gursikhs feet with his beard..

there are many stories.. one current one i know is of keertani bhai manmohan singh jee from here in california (http://keertan.waheguroo.com/index.wn?viewCat=8)..

he told me about this, he used to have a bad voice when he was younger (hard to beleive right?) but then he started going to gurudwara when he was in india and he would wipte hte shoes and apply the dust to his forehead and his throat, and from this his voice got so sweet within a short period of time!! (and with kirpa of guru sahib)..

he still does this to this day.. with so much nimarta... ive seen him grab a shoe and start hitting himself and kicking himself with it!

gursikhs do this.. it is hard to understand this sometimes, but this is because of our own haumai (ego). Guru sahi

b didnt write poetry for no reason, so we can say oh thats all metaphorical.. its NOT.. this is much like people that say bani doesnt say to actually repeat gods name it says just remember him in your mind.. YEAH RIGHT.. guru sahibs bani is not all metaphorical.. it is instruction.. it takes a certain amount of gurmat knowledge and studying to know what is not and what is metaphors... a lot of it is NOT metaphorical.. this is a disease we have in sikhi which is being spread by moderates that are saying guru sahib said one thing, but he didnt mean that..

please be weary of such thoughts singho!

I DO agree with not touching peoples feets the way many punjabis do.. they follow sants around asking for babies touching their feet, eating their left over food.. or drinking spit (ewww) coming up with weird things.. this is worshipping a person.. NOT sadhsangat NOT gursikhs.. a SINGLE person.. WHICH IS WRONG!

thats why many singhs hang outside of shoe racks.. most gursikhs will not allow you to touch their feet anyway, out of nimarta.. it becomes a funny game sometimes with two gursikhs playing tag to get each others feet!! LOL... anyway.. you guys get the idea :D

You got it MKhalsa ji!!

The sakhi is true, and also Guru Arjan dev ji cleaning the sangat's joray is true as well, so how can you say its not necessary?? ohmy.gif

I understand you shouldn't go around touching people's feet, but you should have the humbleness to touch a sant's feet, or a gurmukh's feet, whenever I meet my Singhs I go for their feet, and since they are sooo humble they stop me and come for mine! lol, funny how that works!! :D

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
