desire to trim my beard

Satsriakal everyone

I am a sikh boy,20 years old and I am a proud gursikh who has lately had an urge to trim my beard. I have been doing a lot of research on this but have not come across a reasonable argument. Why is it that me making a personal life decision of trimming my beard might move me away from my sikhi in the eyes of others. The reason why I would want to trim my beard is because I would feel more comfortable and neat. I proudly wear a turban and will always carry on wearing it with pride and honour.

Some of the reasons which I came across were that our Gurus kept their honour and many sikh men have given their lives to protect this honour. I completely agree with this and I understand we should never move away form the religion but slightly trimming the beard just to be more comfortable and make it look neat? is that not acceptable?

other reason was that we should respect how god has created us and should live in the natural form but then should we not factor in the advancements and change accordingly? if we live naturally only then is it not also wrong to get medical treatment? and so many other things we do in our daily life for instance even cutting out nails?

I am sorry if I have said something wrong but I would like to make it clear that sikhi is in my heart, trimming my beard will not change the sentiment one bit and I encourage you to counter what I have said as it will only help me take this decision.

thanks a lot :)

Bro, don't cut your beard. That's my advice but in the end it's up to you.

Please don't be offended by what I say now but I have a point to make. What you said about wanting to wear your turban proudly, in my brutally honest opinion, what is the point? What is the point if you cut your beard? Maybe there is, if eventually you want to grow your beard again but otherwise it is a bit silly don't you think?

I notice this quite often amongst our folk. Once I was wearing a patka (I have a full open flowing beard) and my relative remarked about her son (who is a trimmed beard turban wearer) that he is the good boy amongst us. She said because he is the one wearing a turban. Eerrm, hello, where's his dhari aunty ji? I have seen this mentality alot. It's like the turban is more important than kesh (dhari). They are completely missing the point of wearing the turban i.e., it is all about looking afer the kesh. Dhari comes into this too. The beard is what separates us from the women. It is a secondary sexual characteristic just like the mane of a lion. If you look after it and shape and comb it and use a bit of oil and what not, nothing can look better than a beard.

It's your decision, I'm not going to jugde you for it.

Why do u want to trim it? Thats not good excuse, that god didnt do perfect job of making you. They did, they gave u everything you need, its us that start messing around with ourselves to look cool, or to fit in with the world. Im not perfect but if u already have a beard and never trimmed it, my advise would be dont look at others, u can tie it, if u feel that tempted. But once u start trimming its goin to be hard to grow it again. I did th same thing with my hair and its so hard to keep it long, or grow it. Dont mess it up, your young and lucky to have such a nice beard.

Bro, don't trim your dhari! I was going through the same stuff at home, my parents kept telling me I looked messy and untidy etc, that I looked old, but all I remembered was that Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave me their look, their bakshish is Kesh!

Just keep on remembering the kurbania the shaheeds have given for us so we can stand today with a joora on our head and

a dhari on our face!I

Most people are just lazy to keep their hair and beard clean and find the easy way out by getting rid of them.

Personally, I feel more lazy growing my hair lol.

In reply to OP, I think as someone who has recently started to let his hair grow after many years of being bold and clean-shaven I think i can relate to OP somewhat. I'm not very good at reading into what people are saying but to me, _random guy_ it sounds like you've made up your mind already about what your going to do but your just weary of what others might think.

First thing i say is dont worry too much about what other people "might" think. Think about how you actually feel about this which sounds a bit selfish really, but its you who will be affected. You give comfort and neatness as reasons to trim your facial hair, but I think you need to look a bit deeper into this cus IMO you can have a 20ft beard but still keep it neat lol if you look after it.

Also think about 10yrs time, will you still be trimming your beard? how will you feel doing that for so long?

Short answer is it's easier to keep beard than to trim and try to grow it back later. It was the biggest regret of my life.

You can still keep it tidy and neat without trimming.

In the end, you're trying to justify your own actions to please yourself. Posting on here is only to help justify your decision further. You're trying to make yourself feel better. In the end, it will come down to you and you alone. You can't pin this on anyone except yourself.

Veer u wil trim ur beard and then u will find theres something else that isnt perfect or neat or is messy. Then ul trim that. But what if your nose is too big? Or ur eyes too small? Will you cut and trim them too? Your kes are a part of your body. They too are your body parts.

In my opinion, my perception, a full flowing dhara looks amazing! Looks neat and beautiful just how our Dasam Pita would want us to look. Veer it all comes down to opinion and perception. The difference between us and people who cut their kes is, we are the Lions, the Singhs, the Leaders, and those who trim and cut their kes are sheep. They cut their kes so they can fit in, look like others. Seriously, what a sad sad life!

Can you imagine asking those same questions to Dasam Pita? Could you imagine Guru Maharaajs response?

Veerji Ardas kar that Maharaaj gives you strength to cut away these urges you are having.

Pul chuk maaf ji

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
