Rochdale grooming trial: Nine found guilty of child sex charges

Nine men have been convicted of being part of a child sexual exploitation ring in Greater Manchester.

The men, from Rochdale and Oldham, "groomed" girls, some as young as 13.

Liverpool Crown Court heard the men plied their victims with drink and drugs so they could "pass them around" and use them for sex.

The case, involving Asian defendants and white victims, sparked protests by far-right groups but police insist the grooming was not "racially motivated".

A failed police investigation in 2008 allowed the abuse to go undetected for another two years.

After four days of deliberations, the jury of three men and nine women returned guilty verdicts against the men for their part in the child sex ring which centred on Heywood.

The offences included rape, trafficking girls for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child.

Two of the defendants on trial, Qamar Shazad and Liaquat Shah both of Rochdale, were acquitted and walked free from court.

The court was told that the abuse, which began in 2008, took place at two takeaways in the town involving a group of Asian men aged between 24 and 59.

The oldest defendant, a 59-year-old man from Oldham was convicted of two counts of rape, aiding and abetting rape, sexual assault and trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation but cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Some of the girls were beaten and forced to have sex with "several men in a day, several times a week", the jury was told.

One teenager told the jury she was forced to have sex with 20 men in one night.

Another recalled being raped by two men while she was "so drunk she was vomiting over the side of the bed".

'Incapacitated by alcohol'

Police said the victims were from "chaotic", "council estate" backgrounds. The girls were targeted in "honeypot locations" where young people were seen to congregate, such as outside takeaways.

Rachel Smith, for the prosecution, told the jury: "No child should be exploited as these girls say they were."

"There were also occasions on which one or more of the girls were so incapacitated by alcohol and/or drugs that they were incapable of having any control over whether or with whom they had sexual intercourse," she said.

In court, many of the defendants argued that they had no knowledge the girls were underage.

But Senior Investigating Officer Det Insp Mike Sanderson said this was no defence.

"What we are dealing with here is the deliberate targeting of young, vulnerable girls by a group of older and in most cases much older men who simply saw them as 'fair game'.

"They preyed on the fact that the young girls were extremely vulnerable and impressionable."

The reason these sorts of crimes are being highlighted over and over in Sikh forums is because the proportion of Sikh victims is extraordinary high. 100's of Sikh families have had daughters groomed. Amritidhari families, non amritdhari families alike... our community is proportionally worst affected.

IT IS YOUR JOB TO LOOK OUT FOR TELL TALE SIGNS IN YOUR FAMILY. HIDDEN MOBILES, LATE NIGHT ON THE PHONE, MISSING SCHOOL ETC. MAKE YOUR SELF FAMILIAR WITH THE GROOMING SYMPTOMS.

Do not let your child, niece, cousin be the next statistic!

YOU SNOOZE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CHILD. DO NO LET YOUR GUARD DOWN.

Today 8.5.12, 9 Pakistani men have been found guilty of sexual grooming, abuse and rape of young girls, some 13 years old. The bbc are saying they are Asian, they need to be described specifically as Pakistani, please complain.

insert this link when they ask what you are complaining about

Dear BBC

I wish to make a complaint about your use/abuse of the descriptive term "Asian" to generalise anyone from the continent of Asia and the sub continent of India.

It would seem that your use of the term is typically one of negativity when a particular group is in the news for reasons other than socially and culturally conducive reasons.

Many people are upset at the generalised term "Asian" when most of the population of the minorities who do come from the continent of Asia and the Indian Sub continent do not use this term.

Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese are all Asian, they can all be described under the terms of Asian and it is in my opinion quite wrong to generalise such a diverse swathe of people in this broad, sweeping inaccurate term.

It is something I feel that is in danger of creating a broad distrust of minorities in general. If one community is in the news for criminal and public order issues then they should be described specifically.

You could use the same term as Jack Straw which was “Pakistani Heritage” when he commented on Pakistan men grooming white girls in Derby on January 2011, and is the background of the men in this report. Asian brackets a swathe of people whom have no common ethnic background with the offenders.

Dear Sikh Sangat,

Don't forget the victims in these cases we are talking about children!

Also apart from the bias of the BBC, don't forget the Police and CPS which you and I pay for did not give these cases the full attention on the outset many, many years ago.

Shere Panjab highlighted grooming over a generation ago, the Police and CPS need to stand in the dock for negligence and be jailed, their failures have destroyed children lives,

At the moment Surrey Police are under investigation in regards to the hacking of Milly Dowler voicemail. The Police were aware a murdered school girl’s phone was hacked but failed to act upon this evidence.

http://www.telegraph...owler-case.html

I urge all the Sangat to write to your MPs asking for a Judge lead enquiry (where all participants are sworn under oath) in to the Police and CPS role in prosecuting child grooming cases. Your local MP has the power to table a motion in Parliament.

Before you ask I have done this with my MP on previous occasions and organized a march many years ago but this requires the Sikhs and the good people of Britain to highlight this issue and make a stand, it’s simply a numbers game.

Long Live the Khalsa

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
