FUNERAL OF SHAHEED BHAI JASPAL SINGH JI DONE IN GURDASPUR AFTER GOVERNMENT BOWS TO THE DEMANDS OF THE FAMILY

1st April 2012

On 29th March 2012, Bhai Jaspal Singh was shot dead by the Punjab Police while peacefully protesting in Gurdaspur against the right wing extremist organisation in India known as Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena had been raising derogatory remarks against Jinda Shaheed Bhai Balwant Singh Ji Rajoana, as well as disrespecting the Sikh community.

Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji's funeral was done on 31st March 2012. Bhai Sahib came from a strict Gursikh family, had a Chardi Kalaa Gursikhi Jeevan and was only 18 years of age when he attained Shaheedi in the hands of ruthless inhumane entities. The funeral was attended by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh Khalsa, Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale & Jatha, as well as other Sikh leaders. Thousands of Sikh Sangat were present.

On the morning of the funeral, a meeting was held between the family of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji, the Akal Takht Jathedar and Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale to discuss the demands of the Shaheed Singh's family.

Sant Dhadrianwale took a strong stance to ensure the demands of the Shaheed Singh's family were met by the Government before the funeral was conducted and a course of action taken to pursue justice for Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji. A decision was made that the funeral would not be done until the Government bowed to the demands of the Shaheed Singh's family. Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh Khalsa is said to have played an important role and genuinely remained true to his word to ensure the family was not let down in any way, regardless of the political pressure that is said to have been attempted to be put on him. The Jathedar had agreed and stated he would not move, along with Sant Dhadrianwale and other Sikh leaders present, until the Shaheed Singh's family was satisfied that their demands were met.

The Jathedar of Akal Takht and Sant Dhadrianwale had demanded, with agreement from the family, that the Government suspend and charge those named who were specifically responsible for the Shaheedi of the young Singh, including members of the right wing extremist Shiv Sena group. Sikhs would not wait for weeks, months and years until a named person responsible for the murder would even be looked at by the Government!

The Singh's were made to wait for hours by the Police and the Government.

When no progress was being made, the Akal Takht Jathedar, Sant Dhadrianwale, the family of the Shaheed Singh and other Sikh leaders gave a joint statement to call a complete Bandh in Gurdaspur if the demands of the family were not met.

The Government, left with no choice, bowed to the demands of the family and the Panthic leaders after the 7-8 hours protest and Dharna. Officers responsible for the murder, including the high ranking senior Punjab Police officers, were suspended or transferred and FIR's registered, as well as fulfilment of the demand that Shiv Sena activists involved be arrested and put on trial. Sant Dhadrianwale had demanded that the funeral would still not take place until written confirmation was provided by the Government that their promises to the family would be fulfilled, as agreed with the family. This confirmation was received by faxes within the hour (now in the media as well) and only then was the family in agreement to conduct the funeral.

Respecting the family of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji, the body was taken back to his native village where the funeral was conducted in the presence of thousands of Sikhs who had come to pay their respects to yet another martyr of the Sikh Nation.

Upon the request of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji's father, Sant Baba Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale will be holding a Mahaan Gurmat Diwaan at the Akhand Paat Sahib Bhog and Antim Ardaas to be held on 7th April 2012.
