that means u should be humble to saints ...

u think if applying ashes of saints feet would make someone great , there would be so many great people in this world , spiritually !

Many things in Guru Granth sahib have to be taken metaphorically if that has to make sense in broader scope of sikhi ...

So , whenever guru mentions "be feet of santan or sangat" , it means be humble to all ..

otherwise , no use of applying ashes...

A similar verse is

"Ram dass sarovar naate utre paap kamaate" ( Bathing in ramdas sarovar , my sins have washed away ) . You think a guru which ridicules the idea of going to ganga ghat and getting sins washed by dipping there would say "yeah come take a dip in harmandar sahib and ur paap will go away "..

if that were the case , people can do paap and get their washed away at ramdas sarovar .

So , obviously guru is speaking of naam da sarovar in which soul has to take a dip !
