Hair Dye

Guru Fathe,

I was wondering if anyone can advise....

I am 27 and have gone considerably white all over my head - to the point where people think I am the mother to 20 year old kids!

I don't think that Sikhi allows me to dye my hair but not sure after reading a few things on the internet.

Would be greatful from some advice.

i have never seen a lady of 27 yrs with lots of white hair, something is not right there. Dye your hair.

It is better to figure out what is causing the white hair. It's always always best to tackle a problem at its root, rather than simply mask its symptoms.

If you are NOT Amritdhari, and you cut your hair, then you can do pretty much what you like with it. Colouring something is never as bad as cutting it to pieces.

If you ARE Amritdhari you could cover it with a patka, or if you want to have the appearance, dignity and grace of royalty then you could wear a distaar?

My suggestion is that you start tying a keski.

That way nobody will know about your hair and speculate age.

Even you won't have to see your white hair in mirror and worry all the time.

Will not recommend coloring or use of chemicals, they are injurious to health.

Who cares about our appearence, that is ego.

We consider ourselves to be the lowest of the low, the ugliest of the ugly, the excretement of excretement. If you have white hair and are young, the dye it, humans should not be white haired at the age of 27.

Then detach and move on in getting rid of your identity. How others see you, what you wear and how you think you look is just hukam.

If Baba Nanak could call himself a lowly worm and lowest of the low then surely we can do the same. There are bhagats out there who once they wash their face in the morning, put their clothes on and brush their hair, forget what they look like and what they're wearing all day long because their minds are only absorbed in God- naam simran, it takes you to a higher plane and eventually totally rids you of your identity as you know it.

Get rid of your identity, Only Then will you discover God.

What I am saying is, if you tie a Dastaar you will automatically look like royalty. You tie your Dastaar and forget what you look like all day. The fact that the Dastaar makes you look like Royalty is just a natural occurance!

If you deliberately tie your Dastaar in a tedi (wobbly) fashion, just to give people the impression that you are holier than them, or because you think bbeing untidy makes you holier than others, then that is ego! Guru Nanak Dev Ji is referring to himself as a worm to say that he does not consider himself to be above anyone. The Guru's raised everyones self respect and dignity. That involves keeping yourself clean and your hair well kept. You can take pride in the Dastaar you wear because it is the Guru's Dastaar and not your own Dastaar, as Gifted to the Sikhs by the Gurus.

SRM (Sikh Rehat Maryada) clearly states that amritdhari should not not dye his or her hair at all. If you start using this then you will keep using until you are off from this manukh janam, so decide very carefully my sister. Rest of the world may think of singhs with beard same way as they think of you now. When i was in teenager, ppl always guess my age in near 30's when i was barely in early 20's.

To my fellow brothers, adopting/wearing keski to cover your hair just because of color/hair loss should not be the reason and that is very slippery path. Yes, wearing keski hides our cosmetics problems but that should not be the reason to wear keski. Wear keski or chunni all the time only when you feel the inner need to keep your hair covered all the time because of religious reason.

People visit Gurdwara for various reasons -

Darshan, Saadh Sangat, Nitenem, Seva, Simran, Langar etc

In addition the property is also used by public to relax, access washroom & toilet facility, socialise, visit liabrary and so on.

No reason is required to gain entrance, everyone is welcome.

Similarly it doesn't matter why anybody starts wearing a keski it's ALL GOOD.

The time when a kid starts wearing a patka or keski he/she isn't mature enough to understand the religious purpose they just follow orders.

What matters is "practice makes a man perfect in this case a woman ! ''

it says clearly in the Sikh Rehat Maryada that you should not dye your hair.

Wear a Keski- best solution.
