Exclusive: Sikhs in the US and

Canada unite to get Jathedar

Ranjit Singh's visa cancelled

Vijaya Pushkarna

He may be the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest spiritual seat of the Sikhs, but a section of the community settled in Canada and the US simply does not want Ranjit Singh (left) to set foot on the North American soil. They have not forgiven him for his hukamnama on the 'langar' issue, which sparked violence in several overseas gurudwaras that claimed many lives.

In fact the recent cancellation of his visa by the US authorities, just as the Jathedar was about to board the plane, was because of several incriminating documents, and a tell-tale video tape that a few devout Sikhs managed to get.

The video has the Jathedar saying he killed the Nirankari Baba.

The Canadian authorities had refused Ranjit Singh a visa in the very first instance. Canadian Sikhs believe it was because the authorities had a first-hand experience of the violence in gurdwaras in British Columbia. Besides, last June members representing 24 gurdwaras and Sikh societies had written to Lucienne Robill

ard, the Canadian minister for immigration, and the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi, urging that Ranjit Singh should not be allowed to enter Canada.

The letter pointed out that apart from vitiating the atmosphere in the gurdwaras and emotionally working up the community, Ranjit Singh had been convicted in the Nirankari Baba murder case. They alleged that the Jathedar was aligned with terrorists groups like the International Sikh Youth Federation. They apprehended that his attempt was Òto incite members of our community and to seek resurgence of fundamentalist forces, both here and in India....Ó

In fact the Jathedar's 'US-yatra' plans were kept under wraps. The only people who knew about them were the fund raisers and his hosts, the World Sikh Council, the International Sikh Youth Federation and the Sikh Youth Federation, USA.

The Sikhs who worked to get the visa cancelled were tipped off by the Prakash Singh Badal camp. California-based Hardev Singh Shergill, who saw through the whole nexus when he pursued a fraud masquerading as 'sant Amar Singh', learnt of the Jathedar's proposed visit a day after Christmas. He at once got down to collecting documents that would pin down the Jathedar as a murderer before the US authorities, and strengthen his plea that Ranjit Singh be prevented from landing in the US.

But photocopies of the FIR pertaining to the Nirankari Baba murder case, as well as the judgment were hard to get because Ònobody wanted to get involved directlyÓ. But hope sprang from a couple of faxes Shergill received. They were of letters written by Canadian Sikhs to the Canadian as well as the US authorities requesting them not to grant visa to Ranjit Singh.

On December 30, Shergill handed in his representation to the authorities in Sacramento, California. But it was an unexpected packet that he received on January 4, three days before the Jathedar was to arrive in San Francisco, that clinched the issue. It was

a video produced by a Canadian news team on violence in Canadian gurudwaras as a result of Ranjit Singh's 'langar' edict. The 15-minute video has the Jathedar, standing in the backdrop of the Harmandir Sahib with a few armed guards, saying he killed the Nirankari Baba. ÒI killed him..... He was meant to be killed.Ó

The video tape was handed over to the authorities in US exactly 40 hours before Ranjit Singh was to board the UAL flight No. 806 to San Francisco. ÒI consider Jathedar Ranjit Singh as Sikhs' enemy No. 2; No. 1 being the person who appointed him to the position of Jathedar,Ó said Shergill.

The Jathedar had left for Delhi with hardly anyone in Punjab knowing about it. But SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra dashed to Delhi the minute he learnt about it. According to sources, his mission was to persuade the Jathedar to abandon his visit at a crucial time, in operation was a hukamnama by which the Jathedar had directed the Shiromani Akali Dal not to pursue the disciplinary action against Tohra till April 13. But Canadian Sikhs have it that Tohra went to Delhi to try for a fresh visa for the Jathedar so that he hammers out some sort of a rapproachement between Tohra and Badal, by negotiating with their men in America.

The Jathedar has applied afresh for the visa, and once again has not made a mention of the murder case or his conviction. Some of his supporters abroad are said to be working overtime to see that Ranjit Singh gets his visa. Among them are pro-Khalistani leader Didar Singh Bains, based in Yuba City, California, separatist leader Dr Gurmit Singh Aulakh, and Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, who was given the Indira Gandhi Award, for his supporting Operation Bluestar.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
