NEW DELHI, July 14 (PTI)

Unfazed by criticism, the Congress government in Punjab has launched a probe into assets of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his family abroad and threatened to extend investigations to more countries.

A Punjab Vigilance team has gone to a foreign country to investigate into assets of Badal and his family, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said at a ‘Meet-the-Press’ programme here asserting that his “fight” against corruption will continue.

He refused to name the country where the team has gone saying it may affect the probe but added investigation into Badal’s assets would be conducted in certain countries, including US, Australia and New Zealand.

“More teams would be sent abroad as and when needed,” he said, adding the investigating agencies of these countries were cooperating with Punjab Police, particularly as they were concerned about “drug and terrorist funds being pumped in there”.

Asked whether he was seeking to infer that Badal’s assets abroad had been accumulated by drug and terrorist money, he said that would come out in the investigations.

He said the Central government had been taken into confidence at “some level” as far as investigations were concerned.

Singh, who met Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani earlier on Monday, however insisted that the issue of anti-corruption drive did not figure in the meeting.

“Neither did he raise the issue, nor did I,” he said, adding the meeting was to discuss a developmental project.

Singh said Punjab polic

e was investigating 240 corruption cases and 200 more had come to light during the probe.

“Our fight is against corruption and if anybody’s name figures, it will be probed,” he said.

Maintaining that Badal will not be arrested, Singh said the drive was to establish the former Chief Minister’s “disproportionate assets” on the basis of which a case would be filed in court.

“Facts will be collected and put before the court to make him face trial. If he is confident, he should face the court,” he said, alleging Badal wanted probe by a Commission or a Judge “to avoid” the court and “delay action” against him.

When asked about criticism of his actions by BJP, the Chief Minister asserted that “I will not allow any interference in the affairs of my state.” “This country has a federal structure and a Constitution under which every state government has a right to tackle issues of the state,” Singh said and added that his “anti-corruption drive” had the “mandate of the people”.

“Our actions are based on policy decisions of Congress President Sonia Gandhi,” he said.

He said his government and police were aware that Badal would not “keep his unaccountable assets” in his house or lockers and the ongoing raids were to establish the value of immovable properties.

Referring to Sunday’s vigilance raid at the resort of Badal’s son and MP Sukbhir Badal in Gurgaon in Haryana he said ruling INLD supporters did not allow the searches to be conducted for five hours.

Asked about criticism of his actions by BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu, Singh said he should focus his attention on NDA-ruled states.

He, however, said his actions had not affected clearance of projects by the Centre or release of funds by it for his state.

The Centre has agreed to or released at least Rs 854 crore for various projects in the state and only Rs 950 crore are pending, the Chief Minister said.

He said due to media attention to the anti-corruption drive, the developmental works in his s

tate had not been highlighted.

When the Congress government assumed power 16 months ago, the economy of the state was in “shambles” with debt amounting to Rs 36,000 crore, Singh said.

“No money was available for development and no money was coming from multi-national financial institutions,” the Chief Minister said adding his government had to put everything back in order.

In an effort to enable funding by multinational financial institutions and facilitate setting up of industries, the government has done away with ‘Inspector Raj' and made investments easy, he said.

He also said the state was undertaking crop adjustment programme and sought Rs 1280 crore from the Centre for this.

The Fiscal Responsibility Bill and Power Looms Bill is also being brought in, he said.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
