Rehat Maryada

Recommended Posts

I think only five is right. However, sometimes it's worth being better informed before you take Amrit. That's not to say don't take Amrit or delay it. No, if Guru's Kirpa is upon you then you should Amrit, and win the game life. Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj Ji took Amrit himself, so think of the good company you will be in (Guru Ji's).

Like Only five says it does depend on what the panj pyare say on the day. What they say on the day will depend on the Jatha they are from. So, it is worth knowing what Jathas are out there and what the difference is in their individual Rehat Maryadas. The Jathas with a slight difference in the Rehat Maryada are:

  • Dam Dami Taksaal -
  • Nihang
  • Nanaksar Taath
  • Nishkaam Seva Jatha
  • AKJ - Akand Kirthani Jatha
  • SPGC - Just as an example - apparently they stop the Mool Mantar at 'Gurparsaad' rather than carry it on to 'Nanak hosi be sach' when they are giving you amrit. They also let you only do three banis in the morning rather than 5. There Reharaas in the evening is shorter than some other Jathas.

The Nitnem bania for all the above Jather are from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Sir Dasam Granth Ji, however some of the Nitnems take less shabad from both for their Nitnem.

I can tell you alot more in the slight differences that I know of, and I only know very little. Besides, if I told you I would be accused of Jatha bashing!

Do your own research and find the Jatha, and it's Rehat, that you believe is closest to the Rehat Maryada Guru Gobind Singh Ji blessed us with.

My advice is speak to members from each Jatha and ask them what their definite Rehats are. I know the Panj Pyare can tell you things on the day, however there I some things that the Panj Pyare can't change, or things they must tell which are unique to their Jatha, simply because they are part of that Jatha.

If anybody knows of an Amrit you can take where the Rehat is not specific to a Jatha, or where there Panj Pyare who are not attached to ANY Jatha, then please let us know.

I think only 5 has covered it. Jassa is also right as you should have the time to find out what it was that Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj actually wanted us to follow/do for a successful life. The After that it's just about finding out the slight differences between the Jathas, as their individual Amrit Sanchars and rehat maryadas do vary, slightly. However, a slight difference may be perceived as a big difference by some.

Do look into it, be informed, and then pick the Jatha you want to take you Amrit with, unless you can find a Jatha which is Jatha free as it goes right back to the Amrit Sanchar and Rehat Maryada Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj initiated.

For example, I believe that the Nitnem Gotka(s) of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj are still preserved today. I also hear that Baba Deep Singh Ji's Gotka(s) are also preserved for all to see. Baba Deep Singh Ji was the first leader of the Dam Dami Taksaal. This appointment was given to Baba Deep Singh Ji by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj himself. I think Baba Deep Singh Ji was a Nihang?????

So, for example, you cold see which Jatha(s) still follow the Nithem Bania that were preserved in the Gotka(s) of Sir Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaaj, and Baba Deep Singh Ji. If, that type of consistency is important to you.

If I have made any mistakes in the above maybe some knowledgeable Sikhs could correct, and forgive me, and help you at the same time. On the other hand they could just ignore your request!

Jassa's point makes sense too, in that, if you haven't got the time to find out what the Rehat Maryada is that you will be required to keep, for the rest of your life, then you are unlikely to be able to find time to keep the Rehat Maryada. Although, Guru Ji will help you keep Rehat Maryada once you take Amrit. It's just a question of believing and trusting in Guru Ji.

At least you have had some clear pointers from 'only five'. That's what we need in Sikhi today, some poeple to come forward and share knowledge!

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
