The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has decided to call a "Sarbat Khalsa" to find a resolution to the crisis in the community "caused by the decisions taken in the recent past" by the five Sikh high priests.

Speaking to reporters, DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said conventionally, it was the Akal Takht that exercised the authority to call Sarbat Khalsa -- a meeting to discuss critical issues concerning the community that has representation from all Sikh organisations. However, "in the given situation where the clergy of the top temporal seats have themselves started letting down the community", he and other "likeminded" Sikh leaders were forced to take the initiative.

He said the Sarbat Khalsa would be called with the support of Sikh organisations from India, the US, Canada, England, Germany and Pakistan sometime before April 13. The meeting would take up two recent decisions of the clergy: changes in the Nanakshahi Calendar and the excommunication of former Akal Takht Jathedar Prof Darshan Singh Ragi. Asked if the calling of a Sarbat Khalsa by the DSGMC was a violation of the prerogative of the Akal Takht Jathedar, Sarna said if the Jathedar himself started taking "anti-Panthic decisions", then there was no harm in other Panthic leaders stepping in "to set things right".

Political interference yet again in the Panth.

Whilst most would agree that the Nanakshahi Calendar issue was not handled with most transparency and consultation, large parts of the Panth are supporting the changes, though legitimately, there may be grievances from those who oppose the changes. On the other hand, nearly all the Panth is united against Darshan Ragi and his excommunication is supported by nearly everyone.

Sarna is using both these issues to tackle Badal, rather than him having any interest in the welfare of the Panth.

It will be interesting to see which UK organisations now support Sarna in his quest to challenge the authority of Akal Takhath Sahib.
