I've heard that too, from an elder (what a coincidence).

Its not wrong to give them advice, its only their own ego's that don't want to hear it.

Its like this. We teach our kids not to lie. but then someday we lie in front of them, and then kid notices it and says, "mommy u are lying, but u said never to lie". So mommy shouts "chup kar oye, vadiyaa age nahi bolida" but now mommy is in another trouble. Mommy ik din apne khud de mommy daddy nu answer back kar dindi hai, and this kid notices again, "But mommy you said vadiyan age nahi bolida" and now mommy is sharmsar. And she tries to change the subject.

Did I answer you, may be may be not.

But the way I see is that nobody is perfect. We jump to correct our yougesters but not act on many things ourselves. And we end up in this situation.

The answer would be develop some tolerating and listening skills. At the end of the day, the life is about developing ourselves better. We are not here to correct the world, but develop ourlselves. Here and there, if we could help others see things better, that's nice. But no need to be rude about it.
