The 52 poets in the court of Guru Gobind Singh Ji

In 1682 at the invitation of Raja Nahan, Guru Gobind Singh Ji moved to a place called Paonta Sahib and built a fort on the banks of the river Yaumna. So named because "The True Guru came from Anandpur and rested his foot (paonta)." It was subsequently named Paonta Sahib. Guru Ji stayed here for around four years. Whereas martial exercises continued and a few battles were fought including the famous battle of Bhangani, Guru Sahib Ji alos engaged himself in literary pursuits. Several Sanskrit and Persian classics were translated by various poets who had gathered at Paonta and enjoyed the patronage of the great Guru. Sometimes poetic symposiams were held and Guru Sahib Ji distributed awards to the best poets. Most of Guru Ji's compositions were written at Paonta Sahib.

Baba Ajit singh Ji the eldest son of Guru Ji was born to Mata Sundri Ji, at Paonta.

The number of court poets of Guru Gobind Singh Ji has been fixed at 52. Most of them were present at Paonta and helped in rendering the classical literature into Braj Bhasha, especially from Sanskrit.

The great archer.

Every arrow of Guru Gobind Singh Ji was mounted with half an ounce of gold. Its object was to alleviate the suffering of the victim.

Should the person aimed at be wounded then he could sell the gold for medicine.

Should the mark prove fatal, then the gold could be used to aid the deceased family. Two specimens of these arrows are preserved.

In 1704 when the army of emperor Aurangzeb had laid siege to Anandpur fortress and two of its generals Zabardast Khan and Wajir Khan were playing chess under the shade of a tree while others watched the game, Guru Gobind Singh Ji stood on top of the fortress wall and watched this scene through a telescope. Guru Ji took an arrow from his quiver, strung it hard on his bow and shot it across the fields towards the assembly. Down came the whizzing arrow striking hard into the wooden leg of the manji (indian bed) where the generals sat.

The two generals who were engrossed in the game became panicky when they felt the arrow strike the wooden leg and began to wonder whose audacity and boldness it could be, they both agreed that they had narrowly missed death. Wajir Khan pulled the arrow out with a trembling hand. Raja Ajmerchand of the nearby hill states who had turned an ally of the mughals saw the arrow and recognised it. “This can only be an arrow of (Guru) Gobind Singh, look it has gold mounted on it. It belongs to no one except the Guru. But it is hard to tell from where the Guru has aimed the arrow from?”

The Raja of Mandi at this point interjected, “The Guru is very brave, he must have shot it from atop of the fortress.” Zabardast doubted this as the fortress was nearly two miles away. The Raja of Mandi replied “ Two miles is nothing Guru Ji’s arrows are known to go a lot further.” Upon this Wajir stretched out his hands offering his grateful thanks to heaven for sparing his life.

All the military generals the officers present there began to admire the speak highly of Guru Ji’s chivalry and valiant conduct. They had hardly recovered from the shock of the first arrow, when a second came hissing by and hit the same leg of the manji again. The very sight of the second arrow put all the officers to flight. After a few moments they came out from under their hiding places. A piece of paper was found tied to the second arrow. Zabardast Khan gingerly untied it and read the Persian script.

“It is no miracle. It is a single art of marksmanship. I am not in favour of performing miracles nor do I intend to take the lives of Zabardast and Wajid Khan. You are labouring under the false notion that the first arrow has shot to kill either of you.” Thus the all knowing Guru knew the thoughts of the mughal officers.

The following account appears in the Bachitar Natak, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s semi-autobigraphy,

Raja Hari Chand one of the twnety two hill chiefs once boasted that if he ever came face-to-face with Guru Gobind Singh Ji on the battle field his one arrow would be enough to kill him. It so happened that when some of the hill chieftains turned against Guru Sahib Ji and sided with the Mughal forces that Raja Hari Chand found himslef face-to-face with Guru Sahib Ji on the battlefield.

In the raging battle Guru Sahib Ji shouted out to him “Hari Chand, here I am. Strike me if you can, you may feels sorry afterwards that Gobind Singh did not give me a chance your proudness in archery.” Upon this, Hari Chand drew his arrow hard and shot it at Guru Sahib Ji with all his might. The arrow missed. A second chance was given and this time it managed to touch Guru Ji’s left ear. Guru Ji shouted again “Hari Chand, you consider yourself an expert and a very good marksman, I give you one more try.”

These words infuriated Hari Chand and he shot his third arrow with full force. The arrow clipped Guru Ji’s waist belt but Guru Ji remained unhurt. Now it was Guru Ji’s turn, he told the Raja to get ready. Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s one arrow pierced the forehead of Hari Chand and he fell off his horse.

Guru Ji writes in the Bachitar Natak, “ Victory kissed my feet. Lord, it happened with thy grace.”

There was once a jogi, everyone used to say'' oooh that jogi is very good, does so much bandagi and doesnt speak at all etc'' then Guru Gobind Singh jee told some singhs to bring the jogi. as the jogi didnt speak, and didnt say anything, Gurujee told the singhs to look after teh jogi for a week, to give him meals 3 times a day, to give him a great room to rest in and basically to look after him, once the jogi was sent with the singhs, Gurujee told another singh that do the complete opposite to what i said.

as the jogi entered the room, it was nothing what he expected.

the singhs left him in that room, and locked it, the jogi.... Venerable cuz he cudnt speak cuz he was soo ''religious'' was shocked to see the room just empty.

th singhs gave him no balnkets, no bed to rest on, and no meals.

the jogi was furious, but as ''couldnt speak'' he didint/ couldnt say anything,

it had been a week, on the 7th day, Gurujee told the singhs to get the jogi.

Gurujee asked the singhs infront of the jogi, that did u treat the jogi with respect? did u give him a cosy room to rest? food?

the singhs replied: ''yess we did,''

the jogi was even more FURIOUS! :o cuz he knew that he had none of it!!

as the singhs started telling Gurujee how nicley they treated him the jogi bursted out:

Gurujee then said '' what happned? u were so religious, fooled ppl that u do bandagi and that you wont speak to anyone all ur life.. what happned?? y speak all of a sudden??

One white hair costs him to see the gurus back ...

There was a beautiful Singh in the times of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and gurujee used to love him alot. He was big, strong and handsome and decked in weapons, and gurujee really loved the fact that his Khalsa Fauji was tyar per tyar. One day he was at home tying his dastaar and looking at himself in the mirror and all of the sudden he spotted a white hair on his beard, he started to get worried and he thought he must get rid of it, so he thought one hair wouldn't matter… so he plucked it… he got ready and went to see gurujee, as gurujee was busy he ran up to gurujee and said fateh…

Gurujee looked at his face and turned his back in the other direction. He thought gurujee must not have seen me so he walked around the other side, and again gurujee turned his back to the Singh. The Singh felt so distraught that he started to cry and begged gurujee to speak to him… when gurujee finally spoke to him; he asked why gurujee was turning his back to him. And gurujee replied that God blessed you with such a gift of heera "jewel" , of a white hair and you chose to throw it away… why did you not thank God for what he had given you instead you chose to throw it away and with it you threw away your Amrit… your promise to take care of your hair to death, and you have broken it and I cannot speak to you until you go before the panj pyare and again renew your promise and ask for forgiveness…

At this the Singh got up straight away and went to see the panj pyare, he asked for forgiveness, and the panj pyare punished him with a few tasks of seva and blessed him Amrit again.

He completed his seva and ran back to see gurujee… and gurujee took him in his arms and hugged him.

The 32nd Saakhi Once, the Turks (Muslims) caught a Sikh and took him away with them. They circumcised ('sunnat') him, made him read 'Kalma' (a Muslim prayer). They did what their 'sharaah' (Muslim religious rules) says. They removed his hair, but, his mind was not moved. He started to recite 'Guru Guru Guru'.

They made him eat halal food and then freed him. At the time of 'Rahraas' (the Sikh evening-prayer), the Sikh bowed his head in the holy presence of Guru Ji and said, "O King! I am a Sikh. I fell unconscious in battle. The Turks (Muslims) took me away with them and did what their 'Sharaah' say. Now, what should I do? Protect my 'Dharma' of 'Sikhism'. Otherwise, I will burn myself on a pyre".

"How did they do their 'Sharaah?", Guru Ji asked.

The Sikh said, "they did my 'sunnat' (circumcised), compelled me to eat the food and cut my hair".

Guru Ji said, "Did you enjoy the company of Muslim woman?"

Sikh said, "No, I was saved by you".

Guru Ji said, "Distribute the 'Karhaah Prashaad' to the Sikhs. You are a pure Sikh. Guru has saved you".

The Hazoori Sikhs asked, "O King! How can one be a Muslim?"

Guru Ji said, "Enemies do the 'Sharaah' by force. No one becomes a Muslim by doing so. O Sikhs! When one commits adultery, (his/her) mind mixes up, only then one becomes a Muslim. The mind is the reason. Forcefully, the belief cannot be destroyed. My Sikh, who enjoys the sexual relations with a Muslim woman, is not my Sikh. If someone repents after having sexual relations with other's woman, he can be forgiven; but he, who has sexual relation with a Muslim woman, will never be forgiven".

The Sikhs said, "The Muslims forcibly copulate with Hindu women. If Sikhs get revenge, is this not good?"

Guru Ji said, "Sikh-brothers! We have to take this Panth (Sikhism) to the high position, not to a lower position. We have not to imitate the wicked.”

(It was common practice in those days for the invaders to molest Hindu and Sikh women, but Guru Sahib Ji forbid any retaliation in this area, so much so that Guru Sahib Ji ordered his Sikhs never to even touch a Muslim woman, in this way their honour was insured)

Guru Gobind Singh Ji meditating on the 'Hem Kunt' range of mountains, during his previous life - --- which he narrates in his autobiography "Bachitter Natak". In his narration he mentions his discourse with the Lord Almighty, who instructs him to be born to Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Guru in the lineage of Guru Nanak, and create the inimitable "Khalsa Panth". This narration and other 'Banis' of the Guru were collected by the Guru's most trusted and staunch sikh Bhai Mani Singh, who subsequently compiled the 'Dasam Guru Granth'.

CHAUPAYEE

Now I am going to narrate my own story;

I got to know the technique through hard meditation.

Where lies the snow covered Hemkunt in the himalyas,

Where seven peaks are gracing near to each other. (1)

That location is called ‘Seven peaks’,

Where the father of five pandavas, second son of Shaantnoo Raja meditated,

There I resolved to do excessively and hard penance,

And I worshipped the supreme-death, God, Kalka. (2)

This way my disposition had become such

That from the two, God and myself, we had merged into just one.

I worshipped the formless, who is above any worldly elements,

And I adopted many ways to hard penance. (3)

I did so much and such a service to the lord

That he became extremely pleased with me.

Then, he gave me a command, and

Only then I took birth in this world (Kalyug). (4)

I didn’t want to come down to earth

Because my internal vision was fixed in the feet of Waheguru;

The Lord gradually counselled with me, and finally sent me to this world. (5)

DESCRIPTION OF AKAAL PURAKH

THROUGH THIS LOWLY CREATURE, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji

CHAUPAYEE

When I, Akaalpurakh, first created the universe,

Amongst my creations turned out to be misery-inflicting-demons;

They became mad with their mystical and muscular powers, and

They would not worship the adorable creator. (6)

Then, out of anger, I destroyed them all in a short time;

And, instead, I created the Gods and angles.

They too mustered considerable power and glorification;

And, started assuming to be God themselves. (7)

Shiva started to call himself immortal;

Vishnu also equated himself to the creator;

Brahma called himself the Supreme, and

No one considered the lord as the lord. (8)

Then, I (Waheguru) created eight witnesses, the sun, moon, fire, wind, yamma, element, axis and dhurv,

To certify the existence of the Lord;

And ordered them to worship AkaalPurakh, and declared that there is no one else worshippable. (9)

Those who didn’t, or couldn’t, recognise the supreme;

Started calling themselves as the ultimate.

Many started worshipping the suna and the moon,

And many accepted the powers of fire and the wind. (10)

Some call the stone (saligram) Waheguru;

Some, taking the baths regularly started calling the water, the supreme.

Many got scared indulging in various forms of acts and imitations,

But Dharamraaj recognized and accepted only the infinite. (11)

When the omnipotent produced witnesses for his cause;

When these witnesses’ came to this world, they would start calling themselves the divinity;

The real meaning of the immortal would be forgotten; they all got worried about their glory and splendour. (12)

When none of them accepted the existence of the eternal,

The lord created the progeny of the mind, the human beings;

They’ too got under the influence of worldly attachments,

And started assuming the statues and idols of stone as the providence. (13)

Then the Lord created the saints and seers;

They too didn’t acknowledge the all-powerful.

If someone was made intelligent and wise enough,

He/she too started their own sect or religion. (14)

No one recognized or attained the Supreme Being;

In fact they all increased the divisions and ambiguities;

They would promulgate their own traditions and rules,

And no one would after having been indoctrinated by the cult leaders follow Akaalpuraks commands. (15)

Whosoever attainted even an iota of ‘powers’

Would initiate their own religious divisions

No on gave cognizance to the creator;

Rather, became mad and insane by continuously indulging in Ego. (16)

The principal essence was not recognized nor appreciated by any one;

Each one was involved in a variety of vanities’;

Again, when he created Kings and ascetics;

They too initiated actions in favour of their own memories – simritis. (17)

Those who concentrated in the feet (humility) of the benefactor, they did not even cone bear the tracks of the smiritis. (18)

Bramhma created four Vedas,

And preached only the actions and deeds prescribed/described therein

And made them prevalent amongst the people;

Those whose concentration was confined to the love of his feet (waheguru)

Would have abnegated (distanced) themselves from the Vedas. (19)

Those who relinquished their dependence on books and the vedas,

They became the true adherents of the preserver (waheguru);

Their advice was based on true sermons,

Many miseries of various kinds were ground and destroyed under them. (20)

Those who even bore tortures over their bodies, (to be able to attain him)

They would not give up their adoration for the Lord;

They would gradually move towards the Land of Waheguru;

And then, there remained no difference between them and the Absolute. (21)

Those who were terrified by the books, the Vedas,

They would abandon his path, and acquiesce to their commands;

They would ultimately go to hell (inferno region) and

Would continue to be revolving in the cycles of births and deaths. (22)

Then the lord created Duttatrey, the founder of ascetics (jogis);

He, too, started his own religion;

He decorated his hands and nails, and locks of his hair,

But he did not follow the teachings and advice of the preserver. (23)

With Akaalpurakh’s blessings was created the Gorakh,

His disciples considered him, Gorakh as the loftiest King;

Piercing their ears they wore earrings, and

Did not pay attention to either the love of God or the modes of meditation. (24)

The Lord then blessed Ramanand;

He clad like a recluse;

He started wearing and playing with a necklace of wood;

No one ever thought about the practices and the traditions of the Absolute. (25)

If God created saintly persons,

They too directed people towards their own self styled paths;

God the created Mohammed

And bestowed upon him the kingship of Arabia. (26)

He too created another religion and produced princesses without the religious symbol of hair and their complete form;

He made everyone to meditate on his own name and he never preached nor confirmed the name of truth (Waheguru). (27)

Everyone pushed his own concepts, and

No one gave recognition to the infinite Spirit;

Then Waheguru called me while I was meditating, he said the following and sent me to this world. (28)

AKAALPURAKH BAACH

CHAUPAYEE

I am designating you as my son;

I am extending the privilege to you of being my son

I am creating you to spread my message

You organize a true religion down there in the world

And prevent the worldly people from falling into the practice of fake actions (instead of remembering Waheguru). (29)

DOHRAA

I (Gobind Singh), then stood up with folded hands,

And said some words with a bowed head.

The path of truth can prosper in this world only if you (waheguru)

Are by my side. (30)

CHAUPAYEE

For this mission I was sent to earth

Then I took birth in this materialistic world.

I am relating to you the worldly people exactly the way Akaalpurakh told me;

I will not invite animosity from any one else. (31)

Those people who call me (Gobind Singh) the Immortal Waheguru

Will be thrown into the deep hellish infernos;

Consider me the servant of the Infinite;

But there is not even an iota of difference between me and him. (32)

I am the servitor of the Supreme Being;

I have come to observe the worldly drama;

I am saying whatever the great Master of the universe has asked me to say

I will not remain quiet for the mortal world. (33)

NARAAJ CHHAND

I am conveying exactly whatever the Lord said

I am saying it all without any bias or favour to anyone

I will not blend with anyone’s fakery

Rather I will sow the seeds for the unaccountable Waheguru’s Naam. (34)

I do not worship the statues of stone

Nor do I get impressed with anyone’s guise

I sing the praises if the Naam of the endless

And I have attained the Ultimate (Waheguru). (35)

I will not acquire the matted hair

Nor will I wear big earrings

I will not favour anyone

And I will do only whatever the Everlasting dictates me to do. (36)

I will only worship the Naam of Akaalpurakh

That can be employed and be useful under all circumstances

I will not worship anyone else

Nor will I seek anyone else’s support and protection. (37)

I have meditated only on the Naam of the Infinity (Waheguru)

Having attainted the Supreme flame, the immortal Lord

I do not meditate on any other name. (38)

I am engrossed only in Ones Naam

And am not involved nor interested with egotistic or vane thoughts

I am contemplating on the Supreme Waheguru

This way I am able to wipe off endless Sins. (39)

I am permeating only your shape and form O Waheguru!

I will not be happy in someone’s donations nor will I be contended in someone’s giving of any kind of alms, neither of these activities will give me pleasure

I repeat only his Naam

This will erase countless misdeeds. (40)
