no i do not realise that this is beadbi and i dont not agree that it is beadbi.

it may be hard to understand what im saying because it is difficult to explain.

my main point is that the teachings are the "11th" guru not the ink and the paper.

the ink and paper can be destoyed but the guru cannot be destroyed, the teachings can not be destroyed.

can you understand my viewpoint even if you do not agree with it?

No you said, it doesn't matter, only a book. If you were to conduct such a thing in front of any Sikhs, then see what happens.

ive mentioned my viewpoints to many people and never had any problems. so people agree & some disagree. that is their choice

You would not dare do what I quoted you said, that's why!

it may be that you have interpreted what i said in a way that it was not meant to be interpreted. that may be my mistake for not explaining it more clearly or it may be your mistake for not reading it correctly. it could also be a bit of both. im not afriad to give my views to anyone

I AM from bc so i very well AM aware of this issue..in regards to this being your choice ( tables and chairs are good) so be it, people do w/e they want, do you think thats going to make even an speck of a difference in the lives of those who are against? nope , as a matter of fact someone like you saying its ok fuels the person who believes against in reinforcing their belief...people there is really no need to argue, if you are from bc you should know that there was an akal takht hukam that no sikh should sit on tables and chairs in guru jis langar, if you are against that maybe you might want to re evaluate what sikhi is to you, either way it doesnt matter what you think, that is your opinion why should we care? as a matter of fact id like to give you thanks, if everything was calm in the sikh kaum people would be asleep, you guys wake us up :)

i would like to thank you for posting your viewpoint and adding to this discussion. i may not agree with you but i will defend your right to say it. no need for insults, we can debate these things without violence. it is my belief that there hsould be tables and chairs for everyone in the langar hall, you are entitled to have your owns views. some other people on this forum resort to insults and that does solve anything.

You can get alot more people on the floor than on chairs and tables. It's also much easier to serve Langar properly - giving out thaals and serving langar as it should be done. The only option with tables is self service, which takes away one form of seva.

Sitting on a chair also encourages people to lounge around rather than eat and make space for others.

There are two kinds of discussions:

1) where questions are asked to further knowledge and understanding there by making it fruitful for all parties involved

2) where questions are asked just for the sake of creating an argument and putting the opposite party down

I'm sure most can tell what kind of discussion is happening in this thread. The latter type of discussion can go on forever without making any progress!

In my limited experience I have seen that its mostly "apney" (Punjabi) Sikhs that have such issues. If we see people of other faiths come to Gurudwara they never question the tradition. Don't get me wrong, they do ask questions; but their questions are aimed at getting more information and understanding on why things are done they way they are. Once you explain a couple of things to them, they seem content with the answer.

Yes I have seen tables are chairs inside langar hall, but I have also noticed a note near by that says "These tables are for physically challenged persons only. If possible please kindly leave the space for those who require it." or something to that effect.

People make all sorts of excuses to say why there should or shouldn't be tables and chairs inside guru ghar. I have heard a lot of different reasons, but the most surprising reason to me was "I don't like looking at people's feet when I eat!" Well, that is all okay, it's your life, your views and opinions. You have your reasons, so be it.

But please do not come into a Guru ghar and try to change things to what you personally feel should be happening as it is not an individual decision. It's a panthic decision to keep things the way they are. If in the future the entire panth agrees to having tables inside Guru ghar then it will be done. Until then, whether one likes it or not, we do not have tables.

If someone wants to sit on a table and eat, and can find the space, good for them. If someone wants to sit on the floor and eat, despite the hall being full of tables, then so be it. The point is, don't force your opinions on others!

Why can't we just agree to disagree? Is that really so hard?

i can understand if a 80 year old person wishes to sit on a chair and eat langar like that but to everyone else how hard is to sit on the bloody floor for less than a hour? is it too hard to swallow your food if you are sitting on the floor?

all this crap about modernizing has got nothing to do with it. the fact is that we are acting like monkeys, we see christians sitting on chairs in churches and we want to copy that. thats what monkeys do, they see someone doing something and they want to copy that. people get rid of the ego and sit on the bloody floor. its not going to make you a lesser man by sitting on the floor and sitting on a carpet is not going to wreck your clothes.

why have a carpet? did the gurus definitely have a carpet? its nothing to do with progress. it to do with common sense. chairs dont do any harm. cigarettes yes they harm, chairs dont. it is more comfortable to sit on a chair and eat from a table.

lol do u realise i can use your argument against you. why wear nike shoes? did gurus have them? why drink pepsi? did gurus drink it? why go on the net? did gurus used it?

and lol it is about comfort for you. is it really that hard for you to sit on the floor for 1 hour? if it is sit next to the wall and concentrate on the paath, you will start feeling comfortable in a while. your theory is that its more comfortable to sit on a chair and table but its also more comfortable to not study and get a job. instead one can stay home and be comfortable, yet i doubt you do that....

i have seen very elderly people sit on the floor instead of sitting on a chair, people who are close to 90 years old, if any one has the right to talk about comfort its them, yet they sit on the floor like everyone else and concentrate on the paath, not once have i heard them asking for tables and chairs unless they really need it. if they can do it is it really that hard for you and me?

you cant use my argument against me! it was not my argument, it was your argument. i say we should have chairs and you say no because the gurus did not use them. so if they didnt use them then we shouldnt use nike shoes or cars or light bulbs or we could just be sensible and focus on important things like war and famine, racism and politics, global warming and poverty, injustice and oppression, animal cruelty and drought, floods and hurricanes, earthquakes and forest fires. people need to wake up and forget about small things like tables and chairs and focus on the important stuff.

lol its still about comfort for you, let me ask you again, if elderly people dont have a problem with sitting on the floor, why do you. are you in such a bad shape that sitting on the floor for 1 hour is too much to ask?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
