After years working for a farm equipment company in Punjab, Singh thought he'd settle down and retire. But his youngest son ran into trouble with local authorities after agitating for Sikh independence. The son fled to the U.S. where he was granted amnesty. Unable to get at him, police went after the father -- Singh. So four years ago he fled, too, and joined his son in New York.

He said he would like to bring his wife and granddaughters over: "I'm in a big puzzle. Half of my family is in Punjab -- my granddaughters with no father -- and half is here." The septuagenarian does plan to get a job. "I'd like to work in a big mechanical factory," he says.
