The Guru Granth Sahib Seva Mission has taken it upon itself to translate Guru Granth Sahib into 13 prominent Indian languages so that people across the country can follow the path shown by the Gurus.

The translation and publication of the granth is being undertaken so that the translated versions are ready for publication and distribution on the eve of the of 300 years of installation of the holy book as the Guru of the Sikhs in 2008.

Mr Gurinderpal Singh Dhanaula, chief sevadar of the mission, said many people from other parts of the country had urged them to undertake this exercise as the reach of the granth was universal and they were facing problems in reading the holy book.

He said they were encouraged when the granth was successfully translated into Urdu by Baba Ravinderpal Singh of Talwandi Sabo. They then decided that they would approach prominent regional scholars to get the granth translated into 13 prominent languages.

He said the granth would be initially translated into Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Sindhi, Malayalam and Sanskrit. The next phase would be to get it translated into major foreign languages, he added.

Work on the Oriya and Tamil versions was underway and was being done by Dr N.C. Panda of the Sambhalpur University and Kannan R. of the Madurai University, respectively.

Mr Dhanaula said initially they would get 5000 copies each of the granth printed in Urdu and Hindi while 1,000 copies each would be available in rest of the regional languages. Besides, they would also get 5 lakh copies of Japji Sahib published in Urdu and Hindi while 1 lakh each would be available for the people in other regional languages.

Commenting on the financial implications of such a massive project, he said while the SGPC has not even bothered to reply to their letters, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has assured all possible help while offers were pouring in from various religious and social organisations across the country and abroad.

Similarly, Capt Amarinder Singh had also promised help for the project and the Central Government too has assured that they would chip in financially and otherwise, he added.

He said others who are helping them include former Gurdwara Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Bhai Manjit Singh, Dr Kharak Singh, Dr Brijpal Singh, Dr Dharam Singh, Dr Kehar Singh, Prof Jasbir Singh, Founder Principal, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh Gurmat Missionary College, Chaunta, and others.

He also added that they had written to various universities across the country to recommend names of scholars who could undertake the task. He said boarding and lodging arrangements for the visiting scholars had been made in SAS Nagar.

dhan dhan shri guru granth sahib ji should not be printed in any other language other than gurmukhi itself.

you can print gutka sahib and sanchiyaan on any language, but NOT SGGSJI..... now they gonna print SGGSJI in other languages and then they gonna read in that language's accent and then the bani and meaning will be changed....waheguru waheguru!!!! the pure gurbani can only be read in gurmukhi.

its not allowed gurbani in one sroop cannot be translated in any other language as per mareyada !!!

i completely agree that Guroo Granth Sahib Jee's meanings should be translated into all languages but Guroo Granth Sahib Jee should only remain in Gurmukhi

That would be ideal.

But why are we treating this any different to Gurbani being translated into English? Sikhitothemax is a resource many of use on a day-to-day basis. Those are still translations.

On one hand having translations of Gurbani in other languages might help to spread Sikhi to many more people. But on the other hand as more translations keep appearing people like me become more and more reliant on them and soon there will be no motivation to learn Gurmukhi properly. Also translations will never really show the true essence of Gurbani.

as per mareyada gurbani can be and is being translated ... there is bengali gutkas of japji sahib kept at harimander sahib ajaib ghar ... but in one sroop that is guru granth sahib its is not allowed ... like whole guru granth sahib in english together ... divide it in two parts and do translation ... but in one sroop no ...

but then how will other people know abt the teachings of our guru...dont act like fanatics....the teaching of guru are for evry 1 and ...most of out gurus have quotes in sanskrit...and furmukhi has come from sankrit its self

I think its good to have Gurbani translated into many languages to spread the message of the Gurus across the world. Baba Deep Singh translated the Guru Granth Sahib into arabic and sent it to sangat in arab so i dont think there is a problem in translating bani into other countries..

Who will have the gyaan, kamai and avastha like baba deep singh to do such seva? baba jee was one of the 48 singhs that listened to the sampooran arth katha by guru gobind singh jee.... changing the language will change arth etc, todays sikhs cant even repsect maharaj jees pavitar saroop, let alone those of other faiths. they are calling maharanth only a granth, holy book, i can imagaine how much satkaar they must be giving, whilst doing the seva
