Instead of giving a tangent direction to the original post ...can someone please gimme the implied meaning of the Gurbani line ...ie " You came here to earn a profit"

By Profits does Guru Ji refer to the material profits or the profit of Conscious realization of GOD.

And also im sure Gurbani touches this concept of purpose of life in a deeper sense

Veerji, do a search on sikhitothemax for words like purchase or commodity.

Guru Ji says that the commodity that we have come to purchase in this world is the Lord's naam.

Example tuks from the search :

1.vfBwgI imlu sMgqI scw sbdu ivswhu ]

vaddabhaagee mil sa(n)gathee sachaa sabadh visaahu ||

O most fortunate ones, join the Sangat, the Blessed Congregation; purchase the True Word of the Shabad.

(Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Siree Raag

46)

2. scu vxMjih gur hyiq Apwry ]

sach vana(n)jehi gur haeth apaarae ||

They purchase Truth, with infinite love for the Guru.

(Guru Amar Daas Ji

Raag Maajh

117)

3.gurmuiK vxjy sdw vwpwrI lwhw nwmu sd pwvixAw ]7]

guramukh vanajae sadhaa vaapaaree laahaa naam sadh paavaniaa ||7||

The Gurmukh, the trader, always purchases the merchandise of the Naam, and always reaps profits. ||7||

(Guru Amar Daas Ji

Raag Maajh

Quote

"Naam cannot be acquired as one would acquire any commodity. It cannot be purchased – mol pa-ee-ai nahi. It is, according to Guru Amar Das, acquired by following faithfully the teaching of the guru through the gur sabad – pa-ee-ai gur bicaara."

mol kith hee naam paaeeai naahee naam paaeeai gur beechaaraa ||5||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, cannot be purchased at any price; the Naam is obtained by contemplating the Guru. ||5||

O Nanak, is truly honored by the True Supreme King. ||13||

My dad once told me that when a child is born, he is closer to God without trying than it will ever be.

Now, this made me think, why do religions in general, and even Sikhi :-( scare us about what happens to us after death, and yet neglect to tell us what happens before we are born. Where is the soul whilst the baby is in the mother's womb, for example?

This leads onto a wider debate about religions frightening us into submission, but please do not post about that as that is not what I am getting at in this thread. Thanks. :-)

Once you are thrown in the ocean, your first reaction is not to find out how you got there, but to first get ourself out of the water, swim to a shore for safety. Time being of utmost importance it would be wise to put efforts towards swimming to the shore as the end of the river which is a waterfall approaches fast. Fear can guide you, given the fear itself is utilized properly or Fear as you are interpreting can become submissive to the point that you are held captive by a mere tool that is suppose to give you urgency that you are going to die so do something, swim to the shore now!.
