A Prayer in Action

Dear Sadh Sangat Jio,

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

In December, we will be commemorating the Saheedi Divas of the Shotey

Sahibazadey. We will remember how these two young children walked

boldly into the palms of death so that others would have the choice to

live in freedom of expression, individuality and spirituality.

At such a young age, they had the ability to recognize compassion to be

the root of sikhi and the human race as one. Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji

and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji were tortured to death, as they aspired to

be like their great father Guru Gobind Singh Ji who was the epitome of

bravery and their grandfather Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji who was the

quintessence of compassion.

In the memory of these two great souls, we are encouraging the Sadh Sangat to take part in a 40-day

meditation, which will begin on the 17th of November 2007 till the 26th

of December 2007. This 'Prayer in Action' will be directed towards the

suffering children around the world facing poverty and famine by no

fault of their own. Together, we will directly affect children who are

subjected to violence and exploitation everyday, as we who are more

fortunate, carry on about our daily lives building careers and

providing for our own. Although we can never re-pay Guru Gobind Singh

Ji and the Sahibzadey for what they gave us, we can in part strive to

give something back to those less fortunate than us.

Many kind sevadaars from all over the world have signed up to represent their

region of the world. Their contact details can be found on

www.sikhhelpline.com. All you have to do is to choose from the Mool

Mantr, Japji Sahib, Sukhmani Sahib or a Sehaj Path to do for 40 days.

Contact the representative for your area who will keep you informed on

the details. If there is no person signed for your region, contact us

and we will do everything to ensure you are able to take part in this

global initiative.

Take this opportunity to practice the fundamentals of Sikhi which our Gurus were firm examples of: compassion

in thought and action.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries you may have.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

A Prayer in Action - 21st Century Sewa

As a sewa for the good of all, recite any of the following banis within 40 days (17 Nov - 26 Dec 2007) , after which a collective ardaas will be done:

Do this As follows

* Mool Mantar One mala (108 beads) twice a day (morning and evening) for 40 days (i.e. 216 Mool Mantar a day; 8640 in 40 days).

* Japji Sahib One Japji Sahib Paath for 40 days (i.e additional to your Nitnem).

* Sukhmani Sahib One Sukhmani Sahib Paath for 40 days.

* Sehaj Paath One Sehaj Paath (Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji) to be completed in 40 days or less.

Those who wish to do more than the above may do so.

- When you start your paath or meditation it is essential that you take a full bath and maintain your cleanliness throughout the day, this includes wearing clean clothes.

- Every time you meditate or do paath, it is essential that you cover your head. It is a required mark of respect when reciting Gurbani.

- During the 40 days of prayers, you must try your very best not to smoke, consume meat and alcohol or cut / pick your hair. -- -

- These are against the Sikh Code of Conduct (‘Rehat Maryada’)

- A calendar is provided on page 11 to help you keep track of your progress. Mark off the dates as you complete each day’s prayers.

- Catch up sessions will be done once a week during the 40-day period. These sessions should take place at UK Gurdwaras, which you should attempt to organise with your local youth (please refer to the ‘Sikh Help Line’ website to find nearest Gurdwara, dates / time

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
