Is Keeping Hair/ Turban Essential As A Sikh?

Recommended Posts

Quote from the Granth Sahib, which seems to say hair is NOT important??

"kabeer preeti ik siau keey aan dubhidhaa jaai; bhaavey laambe kes karu bhaavey gharari mundaai"

(Kabir, when you are in love with the One God, duality and alienation depart.

You may have long hair, or you may shave your head bald.)

-- KABIR Source: Adi Granth, p. 1365

This was answer by Bhagat Kabir ji to jogis( who keep their heir uncut and unwashed for life long)

and Sanyasis (who always keep their head Ganja.) But as far as teachings for Sikhs is concerned

Guru Granth sahib teaches us:-

"SABAT SOORAT DASTAAR SIRA"

naapaak paak kar hadhoor hadheesaa saabath soorath dhasathaar siraa ||12||

Purify what is impure, and let the Lord's Presence be your religious tradition. Let your total awareness be the turban on your head. ||12|| (Ang 1084, SGGS Ji)

Well, with due respect Deep veerjeo, that teaching is often quoted out of context. Guruji directs the message towards a muslim giving him guidance on how to be a good muslim, this tukk is part of the whole series of tukks that start from Ang 1083 to 1084 of Dhan Dhan Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. That being said, we CAN interpret it as an inspiration for us sikhs as well! :)

Bhull Chukk Maaf Jeo,
