CHANDIGARH: The construction of a cinema house close to site where the first Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev had worshipped for a good 14 years of his life, was the subject of a public interest litigation (PIL) which has been preferred in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions not to allow such an aberration against the religious and spiritual sentiments of the people.

The PIL which came up for consideration before the division bench of the Chief Justice Binod Kumar Roy and Justice Surinder Singh Saron on Monday, has pointed out that the cinema site to be located close to the sacred place on the banks of holy river of Bein.

Historically and religiously the people revered this place being associated with Guru Nanak Dev so much so that it is widely believed that some parts of holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib too were scripted at this site, hence the need to spare it. It is in this context that a certain sect serving in the region has taken it upon itself to beautify the area and keep the holy river of Bein clean from possible pollutants, the counsel for the petitioners argued while seeking directions to summon relevant records of the case.

The site is located on the road that connects the erstwhile princely town of Kapurthala with the town of Sultanpur Lodhi which is historically associated wit

h Sri Guru Nanak Devji and falls within the jurisdiction of Sultanpur Lodhi sub division.

At the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, the division bench issued notices for December 9 to the Punjab chief secretary, deputy commissioner and the district police chief, Kapurthala, the Executive engineer of the Public works department, buildings and roads, Kapurthala, district town planner, municipal council, Sultanpur Lodhi, sub divisional magistrate, Sultanpur Lodhi and Manjit Singh the owner of the cinema in question.
