Siree Raag, First Mehla:

As it is pre-ordained, people speak their words. As it is pre-ordained, they consume their food.

As it is pre-ordained, they walk along the way. As it is pre-ordained, they see and hear.

As it is pre-ordained, they draw their breath. Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? ||1||

O Baba, the splendor of Maya is deceptive.

The blind man has forgotten the Name; he is in limbo, neither here nor there. ||1||Pause||

Life and death come to all who are born. Everything here gets devoured by Death.

He sits and examines the accounts, there where no one goes along with anyone.

Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2||

Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less.

No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased.

You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3||

Nanak seeks the company of the lowest of the low class, the very lowest of the low. Why should he try to compete with the great?

In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3||

Sri Raga is one of the parent ragas from which other ragas have been derived. The word Sri means supreme or exalted and as such this raga powerful. - See [Ang 14 - Har Bin...] Every raag has a certain mood or feeling, each unique and expressing a different feeling.

In the first stanza, Guru Sahib is saying EVERYTHING we do, say, eat, wear is related to our karma, whether its the past deeds of an individual or writing their future deeds.

laekhai bolan bolanaa (As it is pre-ordained, people speak their words), laekhai khaanaa khaao (As it is pre-ordained, they consume their food) Implying what you sow, so shall you reap...he goes on to say...

laekhai (As it is preordained they) saah lavaaeeahi (draw their breath), Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? They can't even breathe if its not in their destiny. The emphasis of the first stanza is on the karm of the individual is that what they do is based on their destiny. Its all because its preordained by their past karma, which is how they eat, sleep, walk, drink, etc. For example someone rich may walk, eat, sleep differently than someone who is poor who has little to eat, wear, etc. so we do what we do according to our karm. He goes onto say, its upto the individual to see how they deal with what's given to them.

O Baba, the splendor(rachnaa) of Maya is deceptive(doh). This is the first part of the antra, here Satguru Sahib jee is saying that the splendor, beauty, varieties of maya are deceptive, maya comes in many ways, maya is with us daily in our actions. For us this is our time don't fall into the trap of maya for these char din that you are here on this earth.

a(n)dhhai naam visaariaa naa this eaeh n ouhu ||1|| rehaao ||

The blind man has forgotten(visaria) the Name; he is in limbo, neither here(eaeh) nor there(ouhu). ||1||Pause||... and reflect on what was said, are you that man/woman? Are you falling to the deception of maya, in terms of your daily life? In this short-lived life, man has forgotten the NAAM. At the end of the day, this maya is not loyal to you, then why are you so loyal to it? You have forgotten yourself in this play of maya, and you neither fulfill your greed for this maya and neither do you obtain the NAAAM.

Life and death (jeevan marnaa) come to all who are born (jaae kai). Everything here gets devoured by Death. (khaajai kaal)

Guru Sahib talks about life and death, this is an important topic/concept in baani. Aavan jaanaa, jeevan marnaa, comes to everyone who takes birth as a human. When you KNOW you will get devoured by death as everything does, then why do you try to think otherwise. Guru Pita jee talks about it extensively in dasam baani, and we read about it daily in Chopai Sahib as well.

Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2||

In this world, from birth to death, man wastes his life gathering wealth and property. For that he runs around from place to place. And none of these places show him any guidance as to what life is really about. After he dies, all those that he thought were close to him, pick up their belongings and go home, because when one dies it does not benefit anyone.

No one can estimate His Worth (keemat kinai na paaeeaa). By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased (kehan na vadda hoe).

It is not possible to estimate his worth, his expanse, HIM. By talking about Him, discussing about Him, his greatness is not increased, because there's no limit, HE is limitless.

Guru Nanak Sahib says, he seeks the company of the lowest of the low class, who consider themselves the lowest of all. He doesn't want the company of maya-dhaari (following maya).

jithhai neech samaaleean thithhai nadhar thaeree bakhasees ||4||3||

In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3||

Because Guru sahib knows this is where the Lord God abides, he doesn't abide in the heart of those who see themselves as great or superior, to counter ego be humble and instill that in your heart, alot of the time we say we are low, but when someone else calls us low we get enraged and even sometimes stop talking to that person, Guru Sahib tells us humility is the only way to defeat ego.

Guru_Nanak.jpg

In conclusion, in those hearts who seek the pleasures of maya cannot instill his NAAM in it. Trisnaa-Pleasures-Desires and Bhagti-Meditation all cannot be in someone at the same time. No matter how famous, rich a person is, their life gets wasted in maya.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
