Singhni Alert Service

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fateh

Just to let you know that discussions have taken place involving several Sikh community and youth centres and organisations across the UK to come up with a practical and realistic solution to this type of issue.

It is likely that an attempt will be made to set up someone/a team of professional people who are trained in counselling and skilled to deal with these types of sesitive issues. These people will be professionally qualified and will be able to provide the best advice on how to deal with the emotional effects of being a victim, advice on legal aspects and how to cope and move forward with their lives. At present given that most of the abuse is aimed at women it is likely that this team will consist of singhni's to make it easier for the victims to speak about their issues. Initial ideas include a dedicated helpline, national workshops and training sessions with young girls at schools, camps punjabi schools etc, raising awareness etc.

As mentioned with Guru Ji's kirpa these will be people trained to do the job and will know the best way to help our sisters. If we can pump money into hundreds of other projects then we can surely fund something like this. At present these discussions are taking place and as we want this to be a proper and effect service rather than the usual 'desi job' it may take a little while to set up and get the people in place. However Rome was not built in a day and it may be better to develop people who can help our sisters in the proper way, rather than just get people who have little training or experience in dealing with this situaution giving their advice (no offence intended to anyone) as this may be more damaging in the long/short run.

If anybody has suggestions they would like to make please forward them on. Other then that we will keep you informed of any developments on this front.

Many thanks

i think that some of these guys/girls will maybe be a bit skeptical about using the services, especially if its all sikh ppl providing them . maybe u shud have some sort of a one on one chatroom with a counsellor type of thing so the victim can get comfortable and hopefully get enuff courage to actually go visit a counsellor in person, this way they wont have to risk revealing their identity in the beginning and still give counselling a shot...

Thank you for your comments penji, and yes you are right, people will be scared at first. That is why we are thinking of having a dedicated helpline which people can ring and just have a chat first (similar to many other helplines childline etc) the victim will only do what they feel like doing. too often we try and force victims to do things when mentally they are not ready, this can hurt and damage them, the mind and heart are very sensitive and need to be handled with care.

Please give any suggestions which you feel could help, the main thing is that this will be a real solution. We will try and get government funding to pay for the persons role, i.e. it will be a full time/part time job for someone/the team. we have many sikhs helping with domestic violence etc, but few if any who deal with sexual violence/abuse. so this will be something new for us to try and tackle professionally. discussions have begun and people have already shown an interest and this is a real opportunity to help our sisters.

If anyone is currently working in the care sector or has some experience in dealing with these issues please let us know and lets get this up and running. (Again please have patience as this may take a while before it is up and running).

Thanks

sorry just to point out that the professional worker idea is not the same as the sikhsangat help website. Sorry for jumping onto this thread!
