Kirpan?

Should a non-amritdhari carry a Kirpan?

Many times I have thought of this question but I come to no conclusion. I have seen many non-Amritdhari brothers carry a Kirpan. I have asked them the above question and they told me,

'We carry it because it is one of the 5k's and if we can have the other 4k's then why not the Kirpan?.'

This arguement is defonatly solid and holds water but what leeds to my confusion is when I then ask these brothers if they would use the kirpan if need be. The reply I get from these brothers most of the time is that,

'Im not sure Im ready to use the Kirpan yet though as Im not yet an Amritdhari'.

This confuses me because if one is not prepared to use the kirpan in extreme cicumstaces and as a last resort then why carry it? To me whatever we do must serve a purpose and if it does'nt then it is nothing more than a ritual or 'parkand'.

But hey I may not have thought of the way some of you guys think and maybe you might be able to change my mind or strenghthen my current beliefe.

So what does the sangat think about this issue?

I personhally think it is ok to carry a kirpan and use it if ure not amritdhari, coz at the end of the day it is rehat given to us by the guru...without shaster we are sheeps. Guru Gobind Singh Ji Also states that we should not come and do his darshan if we are without kes and shaster!

Rash veera could you please tell me the source in which you learned that Guru Gobind Singh Ji told us not to do his dharshan if we are withought kes and shaster?

If this is true people like me (who have no shaster) surly cant do Guru Granth Sahib Ji's dharshan as Guru Gobind Singh Ji's soul is in Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. This also means the 'monay' Singhs cant do Guru Granth Sahib Ji's Dharshan. And if I cant do Guru Granth Sahibs Ji's Dharashan then I should'nt be allowed to go to the Gurdwara?

Guruji wanted his Khalsa to be Sant-Siphais. Before we are Siphais, we must be Sants.

I feel that the Kirpan should only be worn by an Amritdhari.

That's the whole point... Sant and sipahee.. I think Amritshak concept is not to show off or neither it's some kind of permit for a person to carry 5k's etc.. Should neva think like that.. If one person want to carry 5 k's then why not take amrit? If they have soo much pyaar for 5k's and want to carry them, then why not take amrit??

Being a sipaheee (shaastar) without being the Sant (amrit) it's useless ! We talk about our brave history and how they fought in battlefield etc.. They did Jaap Wahegurooo in their Rom Rom while fighting battles.. It's not shaaster which made them to fight against odd numbers (Sava lakh).. it's the simran/gurbani!

So at end.. I think Amritdhari Sikhs should be allowed to keep Kirpan !

A KIRPAN IS NOT THAT CHEAP!!!! You must give your HEAD for it!!! I haven't seen any non-Amritdhari Sikhs wear a Kirpan, but if i did, i would definitely approach them and tell them not to wear it. It's IMPOSTERS like this, who give Khalsa a bad rep. You appear to be Amritdhari, but are fooling people. According to the law, Amritdhari Sikhs can wear Kirpans. Tommorow, any murderer, gang-banger, criminal could put on a Kirpan and say he is wearing it for Religious reasons. We can't say to him not to wear it due to the fact that he is not Amritdhari, beacause OUR OWN people are wearing Kirpans, without taking Amrit....

In conclusion....wearing a Kirpan without taking Amrit is pure manmat. Why not just give your head to the Guru, instead of decieving people into thinking you did? It totally cheapens the SACRED FORM OF KHALSA. If you want to wear it so bad...why not just take Amrit?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
