Sikh students hail martyrs of religion

Recommended Posts

SIKH students at Coventry University came together in memory of all Sikh martyrs.

A series of lectures and events was organised to raise awareness of the hundreds of thousands of Sikhs that have given their lives since the 16th century.

Students followed the tradition of wearing orange armbands to mark the day, last Friday.

Martyrdom in Sikhism is a fundamental concept and represents an important institution in the faith. Business and IT student Gurmit Kaur, 20, of Stoke, Coventry, of the Coventry University Sikh Society, said: "This day has been all about raising awarenessand teaching people about our religion.

"We have given out a lot of orange armbands and a lot of our members have attended lectures on martyrdom and the origins of the day, which date back to when the Golden Temple in the Punjab was attacked for political reasons and around 250,000 Sikhs losttheir lives."
