"rakhriya" In Sikhi

Could some1 explain whether Sikhs should tie "Rakhriya" - when the sisters tie them on the brothers or is this a Hindu tradition? Some ppl say that Guru Nanak Dev Ji's sister Bibi Nanaki used to tie a Rakhri on Guru Nanak Dev Ji, is this true??

Also, after the "miya" at a wedding, many sikh families tie these red strings on every1's wrists there - whats that about - is it real sikh wedding tradition or another Hindu one mixed into Sikh weddings??

What are the Sikh views on these traditions and what facts r there to back up ur views?

many of these 'traditions' our families and elders keep are not really SIKH events... they are mostly taken from the hindu's... and some from the muslims... they've just been adapted to punjabi culture...

A singhnee doesnt need to tie a piece of string on her brother to remind him he should protect her.

She/he should be wearing a surbloh kara which unlike a string cant be cut, etc.... also another reason why a sikh does not need to part take in a bhramin rituals such as this is because a sikh know guru jee is always Anng Sanng.

whats funny is that rakhri always comes after my brothers birthday so its a good way of getting money in return for spending so much money on buying him presents hehe jus jkin!! :doh::
