The curse of patkas.....

sangato i read this on another forum n wanted 2 know your views.......

I've always hated patkas and lately I've come to understand why they are a BIG curse for all Sikhs.

Firstly, a patka is not a dastaar and I have no clue where it came from. It's not a keskee either. It looks like a ball on one's head. When I wore one, I had genuinely concerned people asking my mother if I had a head injury. It looks like some kind of growth on the head. A dastaar is understandable to an observer: it's a turban. But what on earth is a patka???

2ndly, I've noticed amongst older youth, that boys as they grow older never give up the patka (perhaps because of it's 'convenience') and more and more I've noticed that patka wearing youth who grow beards shave/trim their beards. This is of course understandable. A Singh with a thick beard and patka looks ridiculous, so to maintain the 'boyish' look, they shave. I noticed a young man today who also shaved the back of his head below his patka line. Yesterday I saw a person who decided to do his joora on the back of his head and tie a new style patka. He too had a shaved beard.

I say we should do away with patkas for anyone over the age of 5 and if possible, do away with them completely.

Even for girls who're amritdhari and wear "patkas", it hardly reflects a Sikh image. Admittedly it's better than a chunee but the patka really has no basis in Sikh dress. It looks more Islamic. Dastaar is the Sikh dress and the person wearing it genuinely looks impressive and royal.

Overall, I really dislike Patkas. Just my thoughts.

noo no no don't hate eemm.. I used to be one of em :St: .. :umm: so are thousands of others.. imagine if they read this how it will effect em? it will discourage them, rather than encouraging them to adopt turban

i know patka doesn't look good on adults but it's alrite for teenagers.. under 14 or 15 or soemthing..

Wow.. judda at back.. what da heck.. that's some new weird style.. :T:

But at end i do support patka no matter what.. it's fine for one to wear patka until the guy get the beard (by senior in high skool).. :e:

i think patka for small kids is okay. but for teenagers and adults....oh patka looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo weird on them. but some of them are so lazy to tie dastaar they wear a patka all the waythru their 20s and boyyyy do they look soooo silly with the patka at that age.
