“Waheguru, I have been shot” These were the last words of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh. He did not cry or scream for help. Instead, Bhai Jaspal Singh remained calm and remembered Waheguru during his last breaths. On March 29, 2012, Bhai Jaspal Singh of Gurdaspur was martyred by Punjab Police during a peaceful protest organized to raise awareness of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s execution by the State. Bhai Jaspal Sigh was reciting Gurbani along with the Sikh Sangat, when the Punjab Police opened fire on the congregation. Bhai Jaspal Singh was born in 1994 in a Gursikh family, in the village of Sidhwan Jamita, district Gurdaspur. At the time of his martyrdom, Bhai Jaspal Singh was studying Engineering at the Beant College in Gurdaspur. He was a bright student and had a vast interest in Sikh practices. He took amrit at a young age and remained steadfast towards Sikh values and principles. Since his martyrdom, guilty police officers have not been punished. An investigation report has confirmed that the bullet that killed Bhai Jaspal Singh was fired by the police. Sri Akal Takht Sahib has recognized Bhai Jaspal Singh as a shaheed and his portrait has been installed at the Central Sikh Museum, located just outside the entrace of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar.
