  1. I've been looking at this recently. It's a very interesting extract from the Chaupa Singh Singh rehatnama as translated and published by Hew McLeod. If it is an accurate account, it suggests that Guru ji didn't expect all Sikhs to fight in war, deeming some unsuitable. I've not compared the translation to the original Panjabi text as given in McLeod's book yet. I'm posting both for people's inspection. I love reading, but unfortunately I just can't do it for prolonged periods in electronic form (ebooks, kindle, ipads etc.), and can't afford to print out the whole ebook at the moment hence I haven't read the book fully yet. Translation: Full book available here: https://www.scribd.com/doc/251660050/The-Chaupa-Singh-Rahit-Nama-Translation-by-Hew-McLeod

    KISSING

Vjkk vjkf sangat ji, My question is that , Me and my fiancé have been engaged inside gurdwara sahib, or you can say the ardas has been done which we also call “Roka” has been done. Now the question is that as we have accepted in front pf guru sahib that we are gonna marry each other and spend our life together, can we kiss each other or make out? i know we are still not married but it’s just a thought that arose inside my mind. Please clear the doubts. Answer: No, you cannot. All is ok once Anand Karaj has been performed.
  3. Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki fateh, As a new member a bit about myself. I was 17 when I got baptised. 11 years on wards I have, so far, enjoyed every minute of it. STILL am! with kirpa. BUT you have not clicked this post to read about this am sure? So let's got on with the title. Why Sikhs should not gamble... In late August 2015 I had came up with an idea, to gamble online. I had known it is against the rehat especially for Amritdhaaris. It even states in SGGS "Gamblers, adulterers leave this world barefooted/ empty handed" (referring to NOTHING good can come out of it in the long run), whether you lost a couple of thousands or made millions from less than 100 (pound/ dollar take your pick). But I applied worldly thoughts on myself and thought I could hit it BIG with this shortcut system, besides I been failing lately in life education/ job wise anyways... I opened an account and proceeded to gamble. Does anyone know why alcohol is bad for you? (NO I do not drink). But thing is, with alcohol intoxicated the mind goes into a state of frenzy. The next morning the drunk person wakes up and says "Where am I? what happened last night?" They may notice their hair has gone short, they have woken up with someone beside them. They do not know what happened. Maharaaj Foresaw the future and asked himself "Drink drivers? How many Sikhs will suffer as victim or perpetrator?" Maharaaj also realised (did this happen back in the days)? that alcohol comes in strengths, like from 3% start (I think thas the start)? to 90% in volume (Accent in France as told by my friend). Maharaaj also must have thought "Well, if I give the go ahead and say Sikhs can drink a little then it's ok?" BUT Guru Gobind Singh Ji also realised that Sikhs like to bypass Rehats and everyone will waste away their time on debate "How much is less?" IF Maharaaj gave a unit or figure and said "I suppose 100ml glass once a week?" PEOPLE WOULD HAVE DEBATED THAT TODAY AND USED THEIR MANN CHATURIAA OR "INTELLIGENCE" AND 100ML WOULD HAVE BEEN 500ML somehow. We Sikhs can be excellent in by passing rehats as such. Dussa Paasha came to a straight point and said "Do not even touch the bottle of alcohol" NO means NO! Let's get back to the point of gambling (I will get back to the point of alcohol and gambling). Anyone familiar with Mahabharaat story will know that the punj pandavs had lost EVERYTHING on gambling. Land, estates, Money, Army, any Businesses right down to their wife!!! Why had they kept playing despite it was a rigged game? THEY KNEW IT WAS RIGGED! because they had HOPE! They hoped the game will eventually turn in their favour. Today slot machines have a message written on them, that "There is no money within these machines overnight" so robbers know not to rob the place overnight. What will a gambler do first thing in the morning? THEY HAVE HOPE TO POP IN A QUID AND TAKE OUT MAXIMUM WINNINGS! SAME PRINCIPLE, SAME HOPE, SAME SCHEME AS THE TIME OF MAHABHARAT!!! Just like the alcoholist makes fake promises "I'll stop soon" I would like to speak from first hand experience, when gambling and winning you say "I'll stop soon" IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. Like people call money Maya (I don't, i hate that) gambling and alcohols are physical forms of maya too. Once you indulge in them the mind says MORE MORE MORE! and you make these false promises (lying is against rehat too) and you lie to yourself. I can speak from ONE point of view why gambling is forbidden. BECAUSE YOU DO NOT STOP WHEN WINNING UNTIL YOU LOSE ALL THE MONEY!!! It drives you crazy and depressed. Maharaaj does not want to see his Sikhs crazy, depressed and broke. Just like an alcoholist will promise "I shall stop drinking soon" but the brain is pulled like a magnet towards the evils of the physical form of Maya. What I mean is, when I was on the website I thought "Okay, if I win £300 I stop for 7 whole days then go again. Where will I be in a year's time?" However, when I got on, first day guess how much I won? from £100 deposit to £3,000!!! Any guesses what happened then? I carried on and until.. I lost the winnings and my deposit too! Within 2 days I had lost £2,000 of REAL money. So much for 7 days, I was not a santokhi bandha to stop first day. THE GAME GIVES YOU FALSE HOPE AND FALSE DREAMS! All the material gains, big cars, big bank balances etc etc. But your mind gets trapped LIKE AN ALCOHOLISTS!!! YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN TO STOP! Now, am sure many people state "Gambling is forbidden as the morals of it, not your money, against an honest living" etc etc THATS 100% TRUE! But it's also true, the only way you'll know why it's TRULY forbidden, the ultimate true way is if you become a gambler (please don't. Just take this ex- gambler's word for it). So, it was an ongoing battle where I lost, won, lost, won lost and won. Whether I won/ lost or neither is not relevant here. Second part in why not to gamble is because the morals behind it. It's like taking money that does not belong to you. And let's not forget about Karma! If a person wins from gambling like £200,000, enjoys the cash what will happen to them in their next life? Will they be born in a rich family only to lose ALL their wealth of £200,000 and live in poverty? Who has stolen/ taken their cash? maybe the person/ people in the past life that had lost the money on gambling, that YOU then won? This is all perception and an idea. Only Maharaaj knows why bad things happen to good decent people, why people suffer and how much to balance out the Karmas. I shall write more posts on here, Saakhis, Rehats and, like this post, personal experiences of life. Until then, Bhul chuk maaf, take it easy and feel free to ask questions. WJKKWJKF

  5. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh... Sadh sangat ji, my fiance and I are both amritdhari and want a very very simple Anand karaj. There will be a very very small number of people attending according to our list as we want it to be very basic and according to Sikh marayada, as much as possible. We would day around 10 people tops (mainly just immediate family and crossing out the rishtedaar that we don't really interact with). We have searched online and most of what we are reading is about "Panjabi" weddings and nothing constructive in regards to a simple Gursikh Anand karaj. Has anyone had a very basic Sikh wedding at the Gurdwara Sahib only or been involved in this type of wedding that can list exactly what is needed? We will not being doing things like choora, gold Kara, maiyaan and all that stuff. We just want to know exactly what needs to take place for the Anand karaj to be in accordance to Sikhi without all the fuss and usual cultural stuff that takes place. Thank you in advance. Bhul chuk maafi. Vaheguru...
  6. VJKK VJKF I am thinking of keeping a saroop of Sri Dasam Granth Ji in my bedroom. I can read Gurmukhi so I can read it. I asked my mom about it and she said yes and she is taking me to DTF (Soho Road) sometime in the holidays (I think they have saroops of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji anyway). I just wanted to know the maryada of keeping Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji in my house. My family eat meat etc but they only eat it downstairs but my saroop of Sri Dasam Granth Ji will be kept in my bedroom at all times so none of the meat will go near Maharaj. I just wanted to know if this is alright because if it is beadbi of any sort then I won't bring Maharaj into my house. Its better if Maharaj is kept with the satkaar (respect) it deserves. Please reply soon because I need to know as fast as possible. I will put it in a clean place where it is at a higher level than me. Also, if anyone else owns a saroop of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib then please do tell me what the daily routine of looking after Maharaj is. I really want to be blessed of having Maharaj in my house but if it cannot be treated with the utmost respect then I won't disrespect Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji. Please provide as much detail as possible. Thank you. Bhull Chuk Maaf. VJKK VJKF
  7. This is really interesting. From Hew McLeod's translation of the rehat.
  8. Since people here have a problem with me stating the truth about monay, forget about me. Here you can listen to what Sant Ji has to say about monay. Are you going to accuse him of being "divisive" and "judgmental"? Or chastise him for "hating on Sikhs with haircuts"? Will you continue to heap praise on clowns like Deep Sidhu who pretend to hold him in high regard but take time out of every day of their lives to shave? Will you finally realize that monay with khanda tattoos and monay posting sant ji's photos on their social media pages are shameless and spineless?
  9. VJKK VJKF ji Found a new drink Bundaberg ginger beer - in the soft drink aisle, had one and thought it was nice then got worried when someone told me it contains alcohol - this was on their site has anyone come across anything like this - should I be worried / contacting the Panj Pyare for pesh?: Alcohol is a by-product of this fermentation process. Before we fill the product into bottles we heat the brew to above 70 degrees C. to kill the yeast, halt the fermentation process, and remove the alcohol. After this heating process all of our products have a residual alcohol level of less than 0.5%. Thanks in advance !
  10. Waheguru Ji Ka khalsa waheguru ji or fateh According to some puratan Sikhs and Sikh accounts, Havan Maryada was performed by shamshir pita Sri satguru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj. If so, how was Havan performed and what was the Maryada for Havan? E.g what banis were read? Bhul chuk maf Karo ji

    Laziness is killing me

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh! Sangat ji i need some help. I don't wake up at Amrit Vela even though I'm at home these days. I started with Japji Sahib and then built up to include Jaap Sahib in my morning nitnem. But once I wake up late, I keep procrastinating my morning nitnem through the day, and end up not even doing Rehras Sahib! Idk I'm just really lazy?. Does it mean I don't love Guru Maharaj enough? Can I do something about it? After a good few months my graph is going down. I am clueless. Why is it happening so? And what should I do? Thanking you in anticipation for the support that you always extend. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
  13. I thought if we have love for our guru like a child would with a father then having to shower again wouldn’t have to be a requirement especially if you’ve cleaned yourself and changed clothes and everything? Isn’t just one ishnaan necessary to sit and do paath next to your guru?
  14. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh! I wanted to know if it's ever ok to just listen to Nitnem without physically doing it due to some reason? Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  15. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh This will sound quite petty to most people but I'm sure some kaurs can relate. I'm nineteen years old, I took amrit when I was fourteen and I tie a dastar and have always been strict with my rehat. However, I've begun to struggle. While I still religiously get up to do my nitnem and am strict on what I consume, what music I listen to etc., I'm struggling with bana. I love my dastar, but I'm falling back into my old ways of wanting to wear quirky jewellery and accessories and nail polish. I'm an artist so I am heavily pulled towards self expression, and the people I spend time with encourage me to do this, and I can't stop spending time with them because I'm at uni with them. This sounds petty, but for those of you who have been strict with your rehit and bana, you'll understand how desperately I want to keep my rehat, but I also want to express myself outwardly, not just as a sikh, but as myself, unique. I would very much appreciate any ideas, words of wisdom or little faith boosting comments from any sisters. Sorry if this sounds petty, but I want to feel expressive, unique, happy and free without giving up my rehat.

    Pressures of Marriage

VJKK, VJKF! With Waheguru Ji's kirpa I have been blessed with Amrit recently. I am getting used to the change in my life so far and it's been a great journey, however, I am starting to feel the pressures of marriage. I just turned 25 years old and my family is saying I should start looking now before it's too late, but whenever someone from Sangat introduces me to another Singh, the topic of kes comes up. They want me to break my rehat and shave before marriage. This is something I am not willing to do and never will do, but the pressures of marriage and finding the right life partner is becoming hard. My whole family is not devoted to Sikhi, just a few of us, so it's even more difficult. Another challenge is education. Everyone wants me to find someone with a degree, job and living at home in Canada. Any advice anyone can give would be great.

how to stay on this path

I am amritdhari but recently have not kept rehat for a while due to problems in my personal life, i have not done anyhting bad like do beadbi of my kes or eat meat or any of the 4 kurehits. But i have not been doing my nitnem/amritvela/kakkar rehat- i.e. often I will go days without wearing my kara or kirpan etc and i used to listen to a lot of katha kirtan but now i just watch western tv and movies it's gotten quite bad i feel like i've forgotten my sikhi how can i stop myself from doing all this in the future and what can i do to discipline myself into staying with rehit? do i need to go pesh to panj pyareh? but im scared if i go pesh i will fall off this path again and have to keep going back.. i really love sikhi idk why sometimes one thing leads to another and suddenly i haven't done my nitnem in weeks
  20. Has anyone else read this? I did just recently and it was pretty good and made for a good read. says on their instagram and facebook that all purchases made would fund future sikh projects and make them free too - so thats great! http://thesikhwarehouse.co.uk/product/khalsa-rehatname-bhai-nand-lal/
  21. Hi, I have a few questions and opinions I would like to get off my chest, wondering whether anybody could offer some answers and opinions. Firstly, Is there a difference between tying up ur beard (with gel) and trimming? Is tying up your beard allowed as per rehat? Im a young kesh Dhari Singh and I have a crippling fear of regret, I have never cut my kesh and I know I will regret it if I trim, but I also feel like when I'm old I will regret it if I don't, I kinda just want to make the mistake and atleast experience what it feels like to be an average 20 year old for once, I was very immersed in sikhi when I was a young teen and i don't know why but I have slowly drifted away a little,( maybe because the regret of not doing anything normal as a teenanger got to me.).. I don't wanna let go of sikhi or dissapointed my parents. but at the same time I don't wanna be 60 years old and feel like I missed out on epic experiences during my youth all because I was too scared to dissapointed my parents, When I'm 60 I don't think anyone will care that I had a trimmed beard for a coupe years while was young right? And there have been people worse off who mahraj has forgiven, so why not me if I did it? Also, the more general question I have is, Is it better to be fully in sikhi or fully out? I feel like a bit of a fraud or a fake Sikh , sometimes when I practice sikhi, because I also do things which mahraj wouldn't be proud of ..I'm stuck in two worlds and sometimes I think it's pointless to do both at the same time but other times I think it's necessary to do the good while I'm doing the bad do I can balance out the bad karma with the good ?(it makes sense in my head anyway) and to keep the discipline, because I knwo some things I do are bad and by forcing myself to keep my kesh I feel like it reminds me that I'm Sinning and that I will need to stop doing Those bad things at some point in life, for example I do things like partying, having s*x, Hav bad sangat, but at the same time I also do good things like listen to Kirtan, do paat ( japji sahib and rehraas atleast) do naam, go to gurdwara , don't smoke or drink, and I also have good sangat who I hang out with too. (But my good sangat doesnt mix with my bad sangat, and I feel like 2 completely different people depending on the group I'm with) i already know that sikhi is the truth and i know that shaheed singhs would be turning in their graves seeing this (and me), right now, sikhi is the only thing that will matter to me in the end, and I promise myself I will be a devout guriskh in a few years (with mahrajs kirpa), but it's kinda like I wanna procrastinate a bit Yano ? Like you know the traditional sentiment of inspirational people telling you to "go out into the world and try different things until u find your passion"...well I feel like because I was already born with sikhi, finding the truth (sikhi)was way to easy... I kinda wanna try some other stuff so I can know for sure myself that sikhi is the truth, I kinda just wanna live my young years a little and then once I'm abit older and I've had my fun then get back ont sikhi 100%..what do you guys think? Im really sorry if I have offended anyone, I know some of you may be reading this in disgust right now but I would really like to hear what you guys think, and start a discussion here because surely I'm not the only one who thinks like this or has ever thought this? And if u don't understand my point of view and want to be angry, please express yourself as clearly and constructively as possible, because I know if I read this like 5 years ago I would be so p*ssed off or just think the op was dumb! But That just goes to show how much our thought process can change... Thanks for reading

    amrit, rehat questions

Hello. I am thinking of taking amrit but i have a few questions, i will ask the panj pyare about this as well, but i wish to practice rehat before taking amrit. 1. How did you feel after taking amrit? 2. When you did naam simran or nitnem did your concentration increase? 3. what happens if you miss waking up at amrit vela, do you just do ardaas? 4. If you miss amrit vela for more than 2 or 3 days then do you have to go pesh? 5. If you know that, for example, hair will come out when you scratch your beard or legs and stuff but you still scratch it, will you have to go pesh? (some of the pesh topics are making me paranoid) 6. When taking a shower, where do you put your kangha? Do you just put it in your kacchera or something? 7. Do you have to wash your hair everyday? (i will ask panj pyare about this one) 8. If i go to school and uni and stuff and i am not allowed to carry a "big" kirpan can i carry a small one? When i mean big i mean something that i will be able to use 9. Do you guys use 2 kirpans? One for being the in shower and the other one you just wear when not in the shower?? 10. Do I have to do my entire nitnem at amritvela or? (What i mean is that, for example, i did 10 paaths, 5 of them are the minimum paaths i have to do as told by panj pyare but what about the other 5?.
  23. Hello, I would like to get SikhSangat's observations on the number of dastar-wearing Sikh women compared to the number of dastar-wearing (non-trimming, sabat surat) Sikh men under the age of 40 (I am most interested in the younger generation). It will be very interesting to see what Sikhs who live in the different part of the world have observed. Please state where you live, and whether your observation pertains to your locality, or if you believe it to be global (or over a wider geographic range than the area where you live). Please state your answer in the following format: "My observation is that for every non-trimming young Sikh man who wears a dastar, there are three young Sikh women who wear dastars" or "My observation is that for every young Sikh woman who wears a dastar, there are four non-trimming young Sikh men who wear dastars" You get the idea
