  1. A feminist film company called Dispatch FMI put on a screening of Bend It Like Beckham in London this week. They comissioned an essay to go with the screening and put a call out for proposals a few weeks ago on their twitter page. I was excited to see some positive representation in the media. But they chose Deena al-Aqsa, a Muslim Lesbian, to write the essay. That's how she describes herself in her Twitter bio - that's not me making an assumption and stereotyping her because of her name. Sikhs get so little coverage compared to muslims and we spend so much of our time explaining that we aren't muslims. There is virtually no Sikh representation in the medea It seems like the company is just reinforcing that. It's like all brown people are the same. I don't know if they got any proposals from Sikhs, but they should have made the effort to hire someone with the same ethnicity as the protagonist of the film. You might say Bend it Like Beckham isn't a Sikh film, and you would be right. But it presented Sikhi in a positive light to billions of film watchers around the world. It was a mainstream phenomenon. No film in the English Language has managed that since. I'm going to complain to Dispatch FMI and I would urge you to do the same. Here's the essay. The company's contact details are at the bottom of the page with links to their twitter pages if you want to complain. https://www.dispatchfmi.com/single-post/bend-it-like-beckham-could-have-been-queerer-but-it-still-aged-well
  2. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ki Fateh! I hope all the sangat are keeping well at this uncertain time. I was wondering if the sangat could help me. I was reading the beautiful story about Bibi Rajni and her exemplary faith in god even when she was dealing with such adversities. It was a really pleasing story and all the more beautiful to come to know about the creation of Harimandir Sahib and the sarovar surrounding it. This led me to watch the film "Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam" that had some stellar actors in it for its time. However from the story, there seemed to have some innaccuracies that I wanted other peoples thoughts and opinions on. I can't say I am too surprised for there to be some fabrication of truths in the film, especially from the indian film industry but some perspective would still be nice. They portray Duni Chand as a maharaja, whereas literature states that he is revenue collector "Kardar" There is also a portion in the movie where they go to Maa Chintapurni, and it is there where Bibi Rajni's husband appears to have the revelation of the lake (sarovar) where his leprosy can be cured. I cannot find any mention of this anywhere in any literature. I fully appreciate that the film may have added certain portions in the film to suit a political narrative of that time and also to attract people to attract a certain demographic. If there is anyone who could shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I would like to apologise to anyone in the sangat for my ignorance from this post and also if I have offended anybody. WJKK WJKF
  3. Two questions. How come the actor who plays Sant Jarnail Singh, his face is not shown? Just a voice. Is the voice of someone who sounds like him one person and the actor another. Two why is the whole film on you tube in HD. This stops people buying dvds and going cinemas meaning no revenue for the makers.
  4. We all know of this upcoming film... Much beadi needs to be Banned. Big Hindi singers and actors supporting it. Damdami Taksal - Movie needs to be Banned. 5. Sas ri akaal, I created this short film to inspire people to search within themselves and find their mind-body-spirit connection through the use of faith. This connection can be felt but not understood by the human mind, but it exists to help prepare and face the different challenges that we all face. Please take a look and spread the word. Many thanks & love Sunny

  8. WJKK WJKF So we all know that Hollywood and Bollywood profit off of movies so much because people love watching their movies. There're good movies out there that bring positive messages to the youth. At the same time though, so much bs is produced (especially by bollywood) that does absolutely no good to the minds of people. Recently, "empty inside" was a punjabi movie that was released and it was an amazing movie with a very positive message. I live in Canada and the movie was played at the Gurdwara. When they started playing it, about 3/4 of the kids left when they realized the movie was in Punjabi and based in India. In 2011, when breakaway was released it sold so many tickets in theatres and everything was sold out everywhere. And the main audience was Sikh youth. The same thing happened when Ocean of Pearls was released, crazy amounts of tickets were sold. The only difference between them is the fact that breakaway and Ocean of Pearls were both in English and took place in a western setting. I'm 16 years old and I can guarantee that if more Sikh movies are released that are in English, they will get larger viewing audiences and they'll benefit people way more than all the other garbage they're exposed to by hollywood and bollywood. What're your opinions on this? Would it or would it not be a good idea for more Sikhi based movies in English to be made? WJKK WJKF

  13. New Punjabi film Sadda Haq on 1984 and post issues faced by panth. What do you think, will this help the Sikh cause of getting Khalistan, invoke discipline in Sikhs in Punjab (those influenced by drugs) or just present Sikhs as terrorists? WHAT DO U THINK?
