there's lots of strife in my family nowadays. Even despite just me , mom and dad. I think we're seeing almost daily quarrels over some or the other issue -
Often, I think we tie any good trait that we find, to being a good sikh. Is this true?

In sikhi we are taugh to respect our elders, i am not sure where this teaching came from, and dont know if it is right, what if we disagree adn the child is right and the adult is forcing wrong views.....?

Is it for remaining pure? It seems arbitrary that God would want us to keep it for the sake of letting everything grow? What is the advantage in that, literally? I thought that hair had vitamins in but there is no research for this?

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, This is probably more of a cultural issue than Sikhi related. I am a UK born male with both parents from Punjab - They are pretty easy going and supportive. I really like my mami's neice (My mums brothers wifes sisters daughter)... Does anyone see any issues with this? The girl is a very nice girl who gets on with everyone including my mum who has said how nice she is several times and more importantly into Sikhi aswell. I want to speak to my parents about this but not sure what the general thinking about this is as we are somewhat 'related' so don't want to make things awkward either. I am most likely overthinking this because if someone from my dads side liked some from my mums side (or vice versa) I wouldn't have an issue with it. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Why and how Sikhi spread throught the world in old days? My topic means : how and why several crore people from many Asian regions, all religions and all ideologies became followers of Guru Nanak Dev ji i.e. Guru Nanak Nam Leva, who were later called Sikhs? What was chrishma in Him which attracted people inlarge numbers without modern techniques of communication? I did not agree with people who say “Guru Nanak was very intelligent, due to that people became his followers”, that is not possible. Because during that period and now a days there are several people who are very intelligent and very good orators but still people donot become their followers in large numbers. There must be something else, which is not evident. Pl tell us with detail. I hope members of this forum can throw light on this topic also. I request everybody to give us knowledge about this topic. Even in this period there are about 11crore Guru Nanak Leva people mostly in India, many of them cannot understand Hindi leave aside Punjabi. We must analise: with so much language barrier and hardships of communications , why and how they became followers Guru Nanak Dev ji in those days or later? After 500yrs still they are his devotee, why? How their devotion/attachment survived when there is no contact/preaching/support from Sikh clergy/SGPC etc? I know many hard core Sikhs or who are in power, who are in posession of main gurdwara and goolks and so called mainstrem Sikhs donot consider them as Sikhs but as per my opinion they are Sikhs. They are real real Sikhs devotees, true disciples of Guru Nanak Dev ji because they have devotion inside, which is real Sikhi. Because Sikhi is not with any particular uniform or dress code or even kes/hair are not neccessory element of Sikhi as per Gurubani, Sikhi is with devotion to Guru Nanak Dev ji. I request everybody to give us knowledge about this topic. -
HI all, I am looking for someone whom I can ask Sikhi question to? I have questions about diet and history in sikhism and would like to discuss it with someone knowledgable and qualified. The questions involve eating meat, drinking, and sex from a scientific perspective and historical perspective I am also looking for someone whom I can debate with on Sikh Channel TV on these issues.

I am pretty skeptical that sikhs cant follow, since islam and sikhi are so different but I was still pondering. When growing up in the 90s it was very common to see muslim men in kurta pajama and women in burqa . However seeing the growing modernization in their young generation and the arab fancy among subcontinental muslims , they have become even more kattad or should i say modest in their clothing sense. And to attract youth to it , they have opened up so many stores and brands that try to hybridize the old fashioned boring islamic wear -- ankle length gowns for men and burqa for women into something much more fashion savvy . And thats attracting youngsters for sure. Its not an uncommon sight nowadays , when I pass by muslim colonies to see their young population in islamic wear whose purpose originally was just to be a modest clothing but has nowadays become more of a fashion statement. Dressed in ankle-length long robes that ironically have standing collars , and cuffs, look like someone plagiarized it from a shirt . And they put nice colors on it , sometimes contrasting . Certainly the "thobe" as they called it became less a piece of modest clothing for muslim men or something that arabs wore as an ill-fitting robe in hot desert to something that the muslims like to fancy and wear as a middle ground between fashion and their faith. Ironically though, most muslim men will not wear the red-white checkered head wrap on their head because as they said it restricts their head movement. Women are not far with their colorful abayas with intricate embroideries, lattices and glittery diamond baubles. Makes me wonder are they wearing those dresses for modesty or infact it defeats the purpose. Whatever it maybe, it has led to much more arabization among muslims . And making it look fashionable ensures the young generation also prefers it , even if just on friday. I am wondering if sikhs should follow suit with their kurta pajame , as muktsari suit has become although i think its quite tight-fitting . What about baana ? but certainly baana without turban will look very weird. Challenge would be to attract sikhi youth to turban by modernizing it .

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh i just want to spill my heart out that today after our kirtan smagam at an university i was randomly asked by someone to do ardas afterwards I answered with a yes. But when i satrted doing ardas after kirtan i was blank i forget the ardas I don’t know how and completed it all on a very bad note. It was very humiliating for me that I can’t even do an ardas being an amritdhari sikh i should have done it smoothly but I can’t and moreover as i do ardas for karah prasad no one was there i waited and again repeat it but no one came which turns the things into more blunder. Everyone was laughing at me afterwards, some were disappointed, some were angry, everyone was pointing at me. So all this leads to shake my self confidence, my inner peace. I can’t even have courage to go to the kirtan smagam and do kirtan next week as every Tuesday it was held. I dont know what to do i just want to share this all with sonebody so i just posted.

Is it okay to not talk to people in your family or distance yourself from them if everytime you talk to them or come across them they swear at you or put you down or harm you in any way but do it everytime you speak?

I saw this video which I thought was great from a french couple visiting the Punjab and the Darbar Sahib. I am actually seeing many videos online of white people posting videos about their journey to the holy city of Amritsar. Very good to see and an inspiration. I hope more white people visit and make videos like this. This is a great way for people to learn about Sikhism that are non Indian. Its great the the video has so many views. Over 100.000 . Think about all the people who watch the video and will be educated about the faith.

A question for those who know more than me. Outside of India (leaving this out as I think mixed/disparate replies will be received) in which countries are Sikhs best known/highest awareness amongst the general population ? Some of the top ones will include Pakistan, Canada, UK, maybe Kenya (and to lesser extent Tanzania and Uganda). Others I think will include Singapore and Malaysia. After that, maybe Germany and France, and then some other European countries like Holland, Italy and Spain Other countries of significance (population) - I think most Americans, Chinese and Russians do not know much. Thoughts....

Sometimes i wonder why the indians keep forwarding each other sikh jokes . Most of the times the joke doesn't have the punchline on the sardar. I mean you could replace "sardar" with "gujju" , "haryanvi" , "madrasi" , "american" , "canadian" or anything else and it would still be funny . So why only sardar I wonder . Well if you can make a future generation of a community hate themselves and their distinct symbols because those symbols make them the target of ridicule, then you have as well done a "soft genocide" on the community. It seems to me that there's a malignant agenda behind sikh jokes. or is it because indians think we look funny , not that most of them are good looking anyways .

Hi guys, I have some questions about diaspora relations. In Canada in general do Tamils and Hindus in general get on with Sikhs or is it neutral or is it a negative relation. Secondally and finally , in the UK do Hindus get on with Sikhs /neutral/negative. Also is there rivalry between Hindus , Sikhs or Muslims and if so are Hindus and Sikhs on the same side or are they separate. Thanks

As the question in the title states, what's the reason? Considering that both countries have roughly the same population (Canada does have a slight edge on the UK), why aren't we seeing as many Sikh politicians in the UK as we do in Canada? -
Wjkk Wjkf, Does anyone know of any document, pdf, or website that has all the words that appear in japji sahib divided by muhaarni? So a list of all the Mukhtas, then everything with kanna, then siharee, biharee, etc. Thanks

I have a question about Jathere. My immediate and extended family are very devout into going to their Jathere and performing all sorts of traditions and rituals there. At one point Guru Granth Sahib ji was kept at "my" jathera but was removed by some Singhs for obvious reasons. From my understanding of Sikhi, worshipping ancestors,idols, and etc is a hollow act in itself and not neccessarily going to lead you down the spiritual path you may be seeking (I think we can reference the last pauris of Tav Prasad Svaye here). The realization and understanding of spirituality in the sikhi perspective comes from reading, reflecting on, and implementing Gurbani in your life in an incremental manner. However, if I tell my family that performing rituals at the jathera, let alone go to it, doesnt make sense to me and that Gurbani teaches otherwise, they get angry. They get all dukhi saying ajj kal di paneeri don't give crap about anything. I even asked them why they perform rituals like pouring atta (flour) around a tree a certain number of times. They say the elders used to do it so we have to continue. I believe it's out of fear as in "If we don't do it, this ancestor may curse us" type of thing. So my question is: Is trying to follow my current beliefs on this matter and angering my parents/relatives wrong of me to do when the next time a situation comes to go and perform rituals at the Jathera and I refuse? Or should I give in so my parents can be happy? What would be the Gurmat way?
