  1. https://www.spiked-online.com/2022/07/20/stop-calling-them-asian-grooming-gangs/ Stop calling them ‘Asian’ grooming gangs This is just another way of obscuring the truth about the ethnicity of most of the perpetrators. HARDEEP SINGH 20th July 2022 Last week’s landmark report into grooming gangs in Telford made for truly horrifying reading. It revealed that 1,000 mainly white girls had been subjected to horrific sexual abuse by groups of men of mainly Pakistani heritage since at least the 1980s. Share TopicsIDENTITY POLITICSUK Last week’s landmark report into grooming gangs in Telford made for truly horrifying reading. It revealed that 1,000 mainly white girls had been subjected to horrific sexual abuse by groups of men of mainly Pakistani heritage since at least the 1980s. Tom Crowther QC, who chaired the Telford inquiry, said that ‘the overwhelming theme of the evidence has been the appalling suffering of generations of children caused by the utter cruelty of those who committed child sexual exploitation’. He then went on to say that the failure of the authorities to intervene was in part driven by ‘a nervousness that investigating concerns against Asian men, in particular, would inflame racial tensions’. ‘Asian’ men? This is an odd description of the perpetrators. Crowther pulled almost no punches in his summing up. But this was definitely one he did pull. The members of the grooming gangs were not simply ‘Asian’ – by and large, they were Muslim men of Pakistani heritage. This was not a mere slip on Crowther’s part. The report contains nearly 200 or so references to the ‘Asian’ members of grooming gangs. And subsequent media coverage of the report has generally repeated its characterisation of the perpetrators as ‘Asian’. ‘Asian’ is a deliberately vague and non-specific descriptor for men identified as being largely of Pakistani heritage. Referring to these perpetrators of organised child sex abuse as ‘Asian’ is as absurd as referring to the German perpetrators of the Holocaust as ‘European’. It gives the impression that grooming gangs might have been full of men of Chinese, Korean or Japanese heritage. It suggests that members of Britain’s Sikh and Hindu communities might have been heavily involved, too. While grooming-gang victims have tended to be white British girls, the gangs have also sometimes targeted Sikh girls, as they did in Leicester. What’s more, some of the white victims of grooming gangs have told me themselves that the sexual abuse had a racial and religious element. The perpetrators would refer to them as ‘white slags’ and claim that ‘white girls and non-Muslim girls are bad because [they] dress like slags’. Characterising these wicked men only as ‘Asian’ obscures one of the motives for their actions – that, as far as they were concerned, those they were abusing were non-Muslim and therefore fairgame... To describe them as Pakistani is to risk accusations of Islamophobia and racism. Indeed, we need only recall the experience of the Labour MP for Rotherham, Sarah Champion. In 2018, she wrote an op-ed for the Sun addressing the ‘problem [of] British Pakistani men raping white girls’, in reference to the Rotherham grooming-gang scandal. She was subsequently accused of being Islamophobic and was forced to quit the shadow cabinet. Given the treatment of Champion, you can see why many in the public eye opt, in the interests of self-preservation, to describe Pakistani grooming-gang members as ‘Asian’ – if indeed they talk about the issue at all....

  3. Greater Manchester Police chief admits the force was 'borderline incompetent' in dealing with grooming gangs in Rochdale and apologises for 'failing children' The top officer at Greater Manchester Police has apologised on grooming gangs Stephen Watson gave a personal apology to three of the Rochdale gangs' victims He said GMP was 'borderline incompetent' and lacked 'curiosity' in the cases The force has paid substantial damages to the women abused in the scandal The chief constable of England's third biggest police force said it was 'borderline incompetent' in the way it dealt with grooming gangs in the past. Stephen Watson, the top officer at Greater Manchester Police (GMP), also said the force 'parked an element of professional curiosity' in the way it dealt with the problem, something he said was now 'radically different'. Mr Watson last week gave a personal apology to three women who were victims of grooming gangs in Rochdale who police failed to protect. They took legal action, backed by lawyers from the Centre for Women's Justice (CWJ), that claimed from the early 2000s there was growing evidence from multiple allegations that gangs of predominantly Asian men were grooming, trafficking and sexually abusing predominantly white working-class girls in Rochdale. The force paid substantial damages to the women in an out-of-court settlement. Mr Watson, speaking on BBC Radio Manchester, said: 'And the bottom line is we've failed children in the past, we simply did, there's no beating around the bush. 'I don't think people did it out of a sense of badness, I don't think people did it because they were incompetent. 'But I think organisationally we were borderline incompetent in the sense that we just didn't do things then that we absolutely do now.' Mr Watson said when he was a young police officer if a missing child was found with an adult, the focus was on recovering the child, whereas now the adult would 'as night follows day' be arrested. He also said child sexual exploitation sometimes results in 'very unfortunate behaviours' from victims. He added: 'And once of a day people didn't see past the behaviour, as opposed to questioning, 'Why on earth is this youngster finding themselves in this position, in this situation?' 'And that's what I mean by a professional curiosity.' Mr Watson became the head of GMP in 2021 and the police failings, highlighted in previous reviews of grooming gangs operating in Greater Manchester, happened under previous chief constables, including Sir Peter Fahy and his predecessor. Former detective Maggie Oliver (2nd left) with lawyers Harriet Wistrich (left) and Kate Ellis (centre), being interviewed by members of the press outside Greater Manchester Police Force HQ Though the abuse was happening 'in plain sight', a police operation to tackle the gangs was closed down abruptly in 2004, despite police and social services having the names of the men involved and their victims. Eight years later, following a second major police investigation, Operation Span, nine men were convicted for sexual exploitation of children in Rochdale. The trial heard that girls as young as 12 were plied with alcohol and drugs and gang-raped in rooms above takeaway shops, and ferried to different flats in taxis where cash was paid to use them. Former detective constable Maggie Oliver resigned from GMP in 2012 to turn whistle-blower over the force's failings. A new police unit to investigate child sex grooming gangs in Greater Manchester has already identified more than 800 offenders and is running three major investigations into alleged historic abuse of young girls. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10732297/Greater-Manchester-Police-chief-admits-force-borderline-incompetent-grooming-gangs.html
  4. Grooming gang that systematically raped a 14-year-old girl and 'robbed her of her childhood' in West Yorkshire is jailed Woman was just 14 when she was raped by gang in Keighley, West Yorkshire Eight men were found guilty of 23 counts of rape and two of conspiracy to rape The CPS said two were sentenced last year and four more were jailed on Friday A grooming gang who raped a 14-year-old girl and 'abused her systematically and repeatedly' over a two-year period have been jailed. The woman was raped by multiple men in the Keighley area of West Yorkshire over a period between 2008 and 2009, when she was aged between 14 and 16. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said eight men were found guilty of 23 counts of rape and two of conspiracy to rape in two separate trials at Bradford Crown Court last year. The CPS said two were sentenced last year and four more were jailed on Friday. Nazir Khan, 30, of Keighley, Kamran Hussain, 29, of Keighley, Omar Safdar, 30, of Oldham, Imran Sabir, 42, of Keighley, Hassan Basharat, 32, of Keighley and Barber Hussain, 36, of Bradford have now been jailed. Two others are yet to be sentenced. Nazir Khan (left), 30, of Keighley, was sentenced to 12 years and given an extended eight-year licence period while Kamran Hussain (right), 29, of Keighley was given five years in prison Prosecutors said the girl was driven to parks, flats and isolated places where she was raped by the men. In a statement issued through West Yorkshire Police on Friday, the woman said: 'The driving force for me to keep going through all of this was so that it prevents it from happening to other people, and also it might help other people come forward.' Ed Hulbert, from the CPS, said: 'These eight men cynically manipulated and ruthlessly exploited a young and vulnerable girl. 'They plied her with drugs and alcohol and abused her systematically and repeatedly. They raped her when she was alone and unprotected. 'They are now facing lengthy prison sentences. 'The victim has displayed immense courage and resilience in reporting these crimes and helping us to build a robust case to put before a jury. Our thoughts remain with her.' Hassan Basharat (left), 32, of Keighley, was given 12 years in jail and Omar Safdar (right), 30, of Oldham, was also given a 12 year sentence Barber Hussain (left), 36, of Bradford, was sentenced to 13 years in prison and Imran Sabir (right), 42, of Keighley was given a 12 year sentence Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes said: 'I would like to take this opportunity to praise the victim for coming forward and reporting these offences to the police, for her patience whilst the criminal investigation has been ongoing and her courage in giving evidence in court. 'The abuse she endured robbed her of her childhood and I hope seeing all of these men sent to prison today for these horrendous offences she was subjected to will allow her to start to look forward to the future.' The CPS said the six sentences so far were: - Nazir Khan, 30, of Keighley - 12 years and an extended eight-year licence period - Kamran Hussain, 29, of Keighley - five years - Omar Safdar, 30, of Oldham - 12 years - Imran Sabir, 42, of Keighley - 12 years - Hassan Basharat, 32, of Keighley - 12 years - Barber Hussain, 36, of Bradford - 13 years https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10528587/Grooming-gang-systematically-raped-14-year-old-girl-jailed.html

Despite the teenager not coming from a Muslim background, professionals meant to protect her then allowed the parents of her 'husband' to foster her after she became pregnant, it revealed. One of her social workers allegedly even attended the wedding ceremony. The terrified girl – referred to as 'Anna' – was left in a state of 'domestic slavery', too scared to leave the controlling relationship for fear she would be the victim of an honour killing, she told the report's authors. Details emerged yesterday in an independent report into the treatment of five abuse victims in the West Yorkshire city over the past two decades, which found that 'children suffered abuse no child should have to experience'. Alarmingly, it concluded that some youngsters in Bradford 'remain unprotected' from sex exploitation. +2 Social workers in Bradford turned a blind eye when a 15-year-old grooming victim took part in an Islamic marriage to one of her abusers, the damning report revealed yesterday (stock image) The report – described by the body which commissioned it as making 'difficult and, at times, distressing reading' – began two years ago after nine men of Pakistani heritage were jailed for more than 57 years over the sexual exploitation of girls who had been in Bradford Council's care. Anna was placed in residential care as a teenager in 2002 but went missing more than 70 times, according to the report. She disclosed details of sexual abuse – including rapes – to a confidential support service for girls involved in prostitution, but nothing was passed on to police or social workers. The report said it appeared there had been 'collusion' with this by her social worker 'who allegedly attended the ceremony and assessed that her marriage was likely to reduce the risks incurred when Anna was missing'. Staggeringly, despite becoming pregnant, after a review Anna was formally placed with her abuser's parents as a foster child, with the family even paid a fostering allowance. +2 The report began two years ago after nine men were jailed for more than 57 years over the sexual exploitation of girls who had been in Bradford Council's care. Pictured: Basharat Khaliq, Saeed Akhtar, Naveed Akhtar, Parvaze Ahmed, Zeeshan Ali, Fahim Iqbal, Izar Hussain, Mohammed Usman and Kieran Harris who were all jailed at Bradford Crown Court in 2019 Anna told the report's author: 'At 14 years old I was engaged to be married, taking on the role of an Islamic wife fulfilling the needs of my husband and the extended family somewhat like a maid. 'We had no similarities in race, religion or culture and I continued to be subject to domestic violence and was subject to a coercive, controlling sexual relationship with a known perpetrator. I was frightened to leave, in fear of an honour-based killing.' The report concluded: 'It is hard to understand how this decision can have been made and it resulted in Anna being entirely reliant on her abuser and his family.' Instead of protecting her from harm, the placement left her 'at greater risk and made her entirely dependent on them', it added. While there, she was subjected to 'domestic slavery' and 'sexually abused and exploited by dozens of adult males', it went on. The Bradford Partnership – which includes Bradford Council children's services and Bradford Police – has since apologised to young abuse victims who had been failed. It said a large number of defendants have been found guilty and given substantial prison sentences. The joint statement said: 'We believe that practice across all agencies is improving... but there is much more to do.'

  9. from bbc Lord Ahmed retires from Parliament days before expulsion By Richard Watson BBC Newsnight Published 2 hours ago IMAGE COPYRIGHTUK PARLIAMENT image captionThe Lords Conduct Committee concluded Lord Ahmed emotionally and sexually exploited a vulnerable woman A member of the House of Lords retired from Parliament after seeing a conduct report recommending he be expelled for sexually exploiting a vulnerable woman. The Lords Conduct Committee concluded Lord Ahmed of Rotherham emotionally and sexually exploited Tahira Zaman, who came to him for help in 2017. The inquiry into his behaviour followed a BBC Newsnight investigation. Lord Ahmed said the allegations in the report were not true and he would appeal against the decision. Ms Zaman said she was "elated and relieved" at the report's findings. 'I was looking for help' The Lords Conduct Committee report concluded Lord Ahmed had exploited Ms Zaman, despite knowing she was receiving treatment for anxiety and depression. The Lords Commissioner for Standards, Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, said this "exacerbates the seriousness" of his breaches of the code of conduct. Ms Zaman told Newsnight last year: "I was looking for help and he took advantage of me, he abused his power." She said she had approached Lord Ahmed because she thought he could help her get the Metropolitan Police to investigate a faith healer who she believed was exploiting women. Lord Ahmed wrote to the Met Police Commissioner on headed paper on 2 March, and he and Ms Zaman met at a restaurant in east London in February 2017 to discuss the case. After dinner, Ms Zaman alleged that Lord Ahmed groped her upper thigh. On the balance of probabilities, the Commissioner for Standards' investigation found that Lord Ahmed had sexually assaulted her. Ms Zaman says she was shocked by his behaviour and broke off contact. But, encouraged by a friend, she messaged Lord Ahmed on 14 July that year to ask if he had received a reply from the police. He said he had and they arranged to meet at his house in east London to discuss it. She told Newsnight last year: "He was saying I'm beautiful and, you know, he really likes me." Later that evening, in September 2017, she had sex with him. The Commissioner for Standards concludes: "I find that it is more likely than not that Ms Zaman went to Lord Ahmed's house at his invitation to discuss the offer made by the police to meet her. "However, he had no intention of forwarding her concerns to the police and his use of the offer of a meeting made in the letter from the police to lure Ms Zaman to his house was dishonest." image captionTahira Zaman complained about Lord Ahmed's behaviour to the Lords' Commissioner for Standards Lord Ahmed continued to pursue her and Ms Zaman felt they were entering into a relationship. They messaged each other frequently. She says they continued to meet at Lord Ahmed's house where they had sex. But Ms Zaman says that after two months he made it clear he wasn't going to leave his wife and the affair ended. She says she realised she had been exploited. Ms Zaman first complained to the House of Lords about Lord Ahmed's behaviour in January 2018. She approached Newsnight after the Commissioner for Standards told her Lord Ahmed could not be investigated because the code of conduct only covered his parliamentary "duties" - mainly proceedings of the House of Lords. Newsnight investigation Newsnight began to investigate the Lords' decision not to accept Ms Zaman's complaint, for a film broadcast in February last year. Interviewed by Newsnight, Lord Carlile QC, a former deputy high court judge, said the Commissioner for Standards had "got it wrong", adding: "If someone comes to you for help, particularly if they're vulnerable and you form a sexual relationship, actually that's disgraceful." The Commissioner for Standards denied this, telling Newsnight that was a misunderstanding of the code of conduct. Ten weeks after the film was broadcast, the House of Lords changed the wording of the code to cover parliamentary "activities", rather than just "duties". It was retrospective and so covered Lord Ahmed's behaviour. Ms Zaman re-submitted her complaint, which led to a detailed investigation by the Commissioner for Standards. 'I wanted justice' Responding to the report, Ms Zaman said: "I feel elated and relieved because the whole experience for me was quite traumatising. I'm still digesting, digesting it. "I keep on telling myself that I've got what I wanted - I wanted justice." Lord Ahmed said: "I am extremely disappointed by the report of the conduct committee, which is based on a flawed and unfair investigation process. "I have always said, and maintain, that the allegations contained in the report are not true. "Given this, I am now going to continue pursuing my appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to remedy this injustice."

  11. Grooming gang review kept secret as Home Office claims releasing findings ‘not in public interest’ Exclusive: Freedom of Information request refused so ministers have ‘safe space’ to discuss policy The government is refusing to release official research on the characteristics of grooming gangs, claiming it is not in the “public interest”. Survivors accused ministers of making “empty promises”, while a man who prosecuted abusers in Rochdale called for the Home Office to “show some courage and publish” its findings. It comes after The Independent revealed that almost 19,000 suspected child sexual exploitation victims were identified by local authorities in just one year, sparking renewed calls for prevention efforts. Sajid Javid promised the review as home secretary in July 2018, pledging that there would be “no no-go areas of inquiry”. “I will not let cultural or political sensitivities get in the way of understanding the problem and doing something about it,” he said at the time. “We know that in these recent high profile cases, where people convicted have been disproportionately from a Pakistani background. “I’ve instructed my officials to explore the particular contexts and characteristics of these types of gangs.” But the government has made no further announcements on the review following Mr Javid’s move to the Treasury last year. It has, however, said it will soon publish a national strategy that will set out a “whole system response to all forms of child sexual abuse”. In December, The Independent was told that the work had been completed but would only be used for internal policy-making and would not be publicly released. In response to a freedom of information (FOI) request asking for the research carried out and any reports drawn up as a result, the Home Office confirmed it held the information but would not release it. In a letter to The Independent, officials said they had applied a “public interest test” but the information was exempt from the act because it concerned the development of government policy. “One of the main purposes of the exemption is to protect the ‘safe space’ necessary for ministers and officials to consider policy options in private without risk of premature disclosure,” it added. “Disclosure would risk pre-empting decisions still to be made by ministers. In addition, the information could be misleading if made public and used out of context.” The Home Office’s FOI unit said the documents also included “operationally sensitive” information from police and could prejudice ongoing investigations. The letter added: “We recognise that this topic in general and any insight and learning are matters of strong public interest, although it does not necessarily follow that it is in the public interest to disclose any specific information relating to it.” Sammy Woodhouse, a Rotherham victim who helped expose the scandal, told The Independent she believed the research was going to be made public. “I always got the impression they were going to do a full report and get something official,” she said. “A lot of people were backing it, it’s ridiculous they’re not releasing it. “We keep hearing ‘we’re going to do this and that’, and when it actually comes to it there’s nothing. It’s empty promises all the time.” Another woman, who was also sexually abused by a grooming gang in Rotherham and wanted to remain anonymous, said she was “disappointed and frustrated” by the decision not to release the report. “The government’s repeated failure to acknowledge the role of racism and religious bigotry in grooming gang crime has led to inadequate investigation, protection and prosecution,” she said. “Prevention of future grooming gang crime can only come through counter-narrative sex and relationships education.” The woman is campaigning for changes to hate crime guidance and the creation of a parliamentary committee to examine gender-based violence linked to faith and belief. Read more Huddersfield grooming gang ‘used and abused young girls for sex’ A former chief prosecutor who initiated charges against a grooming gang in Rochdale warned that far-right groups were using a “vacuum” of reliable information to spread their beliefs and gain support. Nazir Afzal said he had been calling for formal research on potential links between ethnicity and street-based abuse since 2012. “The misinformation and anecdote are exploited by white supremacists and others with an agenda,” he added. “The sooner we have evidence, the sooner we can truly confront it. The Home Office should show some courage and publish.” Mr Javid’s original pledge was in response to a letter from a cross-party group of politicians who called for the Home Office to undertake research into common patterns of behaviour and drivers of grooming gangs. Sarah Champion, the Labour MP for Rotherham, was among the signatories and voiced hope at the time that the review would prevent abuse and protect children. The Home Office has said it will soon publish a national strategy that will set out a “whole system response to all forms of child sexual abuse”. A spokesperson for the government department said: “Child sexual abuse is a sickening crime and predators who abuse children will face the full force of the law. “We’re pursuing work on a number of fronts to understand the characteristics of group-based offending and the contexts in which it occurs. This includes ongoing work commissioned by the previous home secretary and will inform future government policies on child sexual abuse. “New sentencing laws will also ensure the most serious violent and sexual offenders spend time in prison that matches the severity of their crimes, protecting victims and giving the public confidence in the criminal justice system.” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/grooming-gang-rotherham-review-home-office-findings-a9344896.html

  13. Rochdale grooming gang members remain in UK 18 months after losing court battle against deportation Exclusive: Home Office accused of prioritising offenders with Jamaican roots over sex abusers Three members of a Rochdale grooming gang remain in the UK more than 18 months after they lost an appeal against losing their British citizenship, it has emerged. Victims of Abdul Aziz, Adil Khan and Qari Abdul Rauf have reported recent sightings of the men in the Greater Manchester area. The trio have been able to return to the town where they committed years of horrific abuse after being released from prison. Khan got an underage victim pregnant while he was in his 40s, while Aziz and Rauf trafficked teenage girls for sex in their taxis. One of the prosecutors who brought charges against the Rochdale grooming gang said victims had informed him of several sightings of all three men since Christmas. Nazir Afzal OBE, the former chief crown prosecutor for northwest England, told The Independent: “Given the zeal with which the Home Office is dealing with offenders with Jamaican roots, I and the victims and their families are somewhat surprised that these men continue to walk the streets of Rochdale and keep running into those whom they abused. “Having read that one of the deportees to Jamaica was convicted only of dangerous driving, one has to ask if driving a car erratically is viewed as more dangerous and more of a priority than a man who has sexually abused children.” The Home Office announced its intention to remove the men’s British citizenship in July 2015, saying the move was in the public interest because of their “serious and organised offences”. Aziz, Khan and Rauf launched a legal challenge but lost the case at the Court of Appeal in August 2018, paving the way for them to be deported to Pakistan. The court heard that the three convicts were dual nationals, having moved to the UK from Pakistan but became naturalised Judges said the Home Office’s steps to remove their UK citizenship were a “prelude to possible deportation to Pakistan”. Each of them challenged the decision, arguing it amounted to a breach of their human rights and the interests of their children, but their cases were rejected by both the government’s First Tier Tribunal (FTT) and Upper Tribunal. The Court of Appeal concluded that the Home Office and FTT had not acted unlawfully and were “entitled to find that the deprivation of citizenship in the case of each appellant would be compliant” with the law. Lord Justice Sales said: “All the men treated the girls as though they were worthless and beyond all respect. They were motivated by lust and greed.” They were jailed in 2012 as part of a gang who plied girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs and passed them around for sex. Aziz, a taxi driver known as “the Master”, was a leading member of the group and was given a nine-year sentence for trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child. He was married with three children at the time of the abuse. Khan, also a taxi driver, received eight years for conspiracy and trafficking a 13-year-old girl who became pregnant with his child when he was in his 40s. He also targeted a 15-year-old girl and physically abused her when she complained about her treatment. Rauf, a married taxi driver with five children, was handed six years for trafficking a teenage girl and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child, after driving one victim to locations where she had sex with him and others up to 20 times. Co-defendant and grooming ringleader Shabir Ahmed was also notified that he would be stripped of his British citizenship but remains in prison serving a 22-year term for rape. Aziz, Khan and Rauf’s continued presence in Rochdale emerged as the government faced a legal challenge over a deportation flight to Jamaica. After campaigners raised concern that not all of around 50 people on board had access to legal advice, a plane took off with only 17 people on board last month. There were questions over proportionality when it emerged that one deportee had been convicted of dangerous driving. The government would not comment on the Rochdale case but said it had deported more than 51,000 foreign national offenders since 2010. It defended the deportation flight to Jamaica, saying those on board were serious or persistent criminals and included men convicted of rape, violent crimes and drug offences. A Home Office spokesperson added: “The government will do everything within its power to deport those who have no right to remain in the UK.”

Rotherham grooming gang: Man who indecently assaulted young girls jailed for 18 years Mohammed Ahsan selected his victims ‘because of their vulnerability,’ say investigators https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/rotherham-grooming-gang-trial-mohammed-ahsan-jailed-operation-stovewood-a9113606.html
  17. This is eye opening. Ex Scotland Yard police man Jon Wedger (who did 27 years service) exposes how high ranking police officers and politicians derail investigations into organised pedo rings, and try and intimidate people who persist in confronting these things. It's interesting to note how he mentions one of the hotbeds of such abuse being Southall, which most of us will know has a sizeable Sikh population. Sadly, we still get the odd dimwitted, cowardly apna (and apnee) who resent Sikhs who have been trying to combat the long-standing phenomena of the targeted grooming of people in our own community. Often they suggest that the phenomena is exaggerated, or that confronting leads to 'community tensions' (which their cowardly nature seems to make them petrified of?). Well, here we seem to have an informed, experienced perspective from outside of our community. The indifference of the police, social services and political class Jon Wedger alludes to here, echoes the sentiments of many in the Sikh community who've been trying to deal with this, or who have approached the establishment for help in dealing with their own family issues in this department. I've only seen the first hour yet, but I'd like to salute all those people who've been trying to confront and deal with this issue (sometimes for decades) in the face of so much obfuscation by people in positions of power. Keep it up, and all these efforts ARE bearing fruit as awareness IS increasing, despite all the attempts to malign people and cover up. Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

    self esteem

hi i think a lot of the issues that periodically come up on this site have to do with low self esteem. what is self esteem? how you think of yourself, how you value yourself, how much love and respect you have for yourself. what is low self esteem? when you look down on yourself, you base on your opinion of yourself on how others view you, you look for validation and approval from others. what causes low self esteem? depending on external influences to understand and feel good about yourself. what is the cure to low esteem? to love, respect and value yourself. this is not the same as arrogance or pride. it's a sense of self security. don't base how you feel about yourself on the opinions, feelings or reactions of others. in Sikhi, no one is high or low ("uttam neech nah koi"). Only God is above. Therefore, you don't have to look up or down on anyone.
  19. This is just unreal. It claims that a member of the council might have helped broker a deal with the police to protect a paedo relative! And then people try and deny Sikh claims that the establishment are purposefully playing down or denying Sikh girls being targeted by such groomers. Jahangir Akhtar Miss Akhtar's father is Jahangir Akhtar, who quit as deputy leader of the council in 2013 and lost his seat on the council the following year. His resignation followed claims he helped broker a deal with police involving one of his relatives. The relative - gang ringleader Arshid 'Mad Ash' Hussain - was said to have agreed to hand a missing 14-year-old girl to officers at a petrol station after receiving an assurance that he would not be prosecuted. Jahangir Akhtar's resignation followed claims he helped broker a deal with police involving one of his relatives, gang ringleader Arshid Hussain (pictured) An independent inquiry led by Professor Alexis Jay found an estimated 1,400 Rotherham girls were targeted for sexual abuse by organised gangs of mostly British Pakistani men over 16 years. Four brothers who were jailed for a total of 98 years in 2016 after being convicted of 53 child sex offences against 16 girls - Arshid, Basharat, Bannaras and Sageer Hussain - are related to the Akhtars. Abuse victims helped by Rise voiced concern about the appointment. One woman, who was helped by the charity along with her sister, and who gave evidence against the Hussain brothers, said: 'I'm staggered that the charity and council didn't recognise that putting Jahangir Akhtar's daughter in that role would create a potential conflict of interest.' 'What sort of a signal does that send out to CSE survivors? How are we supposed to have any confidence that the authorities in Rotherham have learnt from the past?' The woman said Miss Akhtar's work for the charity could have given her access to information about girls and women who were groomed and sexually exploited by one or more of her relatives or their associates. Rise is believed to have informed Rotherham council of Miss Akhtar's appointment but the local authority is thought to have reported no concerns. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6811673/Daughter-councillor-implicated-Rotherham-scandal-helps-run-support-service-victims.html
